We have always heard that Mauritius is a holiday like none other but for us it was our experiences and interactions with the staff at the Westin Turtle Bay that made it an unforgettable experience. It was all about service excellence from every individual we interacted with!! It started from the time when we arrived, we arrived early morning and our young children were tired from the flight. Our room was not ready, but the night manager Ado found us another room and allowed us to rest there until our room was ready. Meant that we were able to catch a snooze and hit the pool by mid-day. Was a good start to the holiday, thanks Ado! we got off to a very good start with your help. I found the team to be extremely pro-active, its like they were pre-empting your requirements. For example, they noted the curtains were not hanging properly (not something we had seen) and changed it without us even asking. Never had issues with rooms not cleaned or us being unhappy with the state after cleaning. All top notch, thanks Yogesh. Other items which added to the experience included: 1) our daughter lost a pair of sunglasses and we realised it may be at the boat house. Surprise, they had it and returned it to us. 2) The baby cost and the baby essentials bag and toy 3) If you need it there is a nurse and infirmary 4) Now what do I say about the restaurant staff. a. The managers (Mukesh & Ajay) truly get to know their visitors and add that extra special personal touch. I mean extra special, they go out of their way to make you feel at home. b. Generally, though all the staff are very pleasant and receptive to your needs c. They remembered what the kids ate and were always willing to oblige to make something the kids wanted. They were always checking up if the kids were okay and if were fine d. My daughter was not feeling well and threw up in the restaurant, Mukesh’s first reaction was to check if she needed a doctor and if it was the food before they even thought of cleaning up for example. Always putting the guest first. e. I had hurt my foot and the next day cleaner was asking if my foot was fine and if my daughter was fine – how did he know she had been sick in the restaurant! There was always a wide variety of food available and am sure it would cater to the different palates. Whilst we were initially hesitant to leave the kids at the Kids club, they were the ones that kept on wanting to go to the kid’s club. There were a variety of activities including time in the pool which the kids really enjoyed. Even the new year’s evening programme was a treat for the kids. Thank you, Maria and team (too many to mention). If you want to go for a run they have gear you could hire at a very nominal rate and they even have someone that would run with you with sufficient notice. You could do your own route or follow the trail the resort had mapped you. Be careful with the humidity and possible dehydration so start with smaller distances. In terms of the boat house there are some activities which are included in the rates but for others you would have to pay. The individuals at the boat house are keen to offer private options so be aware and shop around first. I think the resort could do a bit more in terms of recycling – am told all dirt removed from the rooms are sorted/ recycled and there is one set of recycle bins at reception. I had seen a leaflet from a travel agent indicating they do have access for disabled persons at the resort but if you book a ground floor room you should be okay. Some things to note: 1) in terms of bed sizes, make sure you confirm ahead of time e.g. we were told it was a queen bed but the Mauritian queen is more like a double bed 2) if you have kids, try to get a ground floor unit if you can (the stairs can be challenging although its mainly 1 floor) and try to get a unit close to reception. Whilst not the end of the world as there were always shuttles around, with kids its ideal if you are close to reception 3) whilst you want to forget about time, there is no time clock around the pool area and if you don’t have your phone or watch with you in the water you need to go check or ask someone 4) in terms of the main pool area, the toilets are bit far from pool and you need to make sure you put on your footwear or else your feet will be burning very quickly! 5) Ber careful in the pool as there was one row which had sharp edges resulting in me cutting my foot – not too worry the infirmary was there 6) In terms of dining, be aware there would be insects flying around and gheko’s on the roof so don’t freak out when you see it 7) There is a cat on the premises and one guest was not impressed the cat was walking around – all unnecessary in my mind as the cat was not interfering with anyone or their food Maybe some people will say most of what I have noted above is what you would expect from a 5-star resort/ hotel but hey I was blown away by the service and the interactions with the various individuals at Westin and am confident you would struggle to find something which comes close. So we checked in this hotel on 14th Feb and it was a very smooth check-in.. staff here is very helpful n cheerful specially Kishan, Siwa and entire Breakfast Buffet staff... But this is not the property that u expect on ur honeymoon when u pay such a huge amount. Cons of this hotel - 1) U need to reserve ur dinner venue (Mystique, kangan, fusion etc) which obviously guest does not know and even we were not briefed about.. When we went for dinner then we came to know that we have to do a reservation or else enjoy buffet (w/o reservation).. Also, there r so many condition while u do the reservation like kangan is closed on this day, fusion is full blah blah blah.. 2) We went to Kangan for dinner .. we placed our order at 8:16pm and the food was served at around 9:20 pm (slowest service I have seen in the world) Similar case is with Fusion..we went twice and both the time service was pathetic.. The best part is they took 20 mins to bring second beer which I ordered. 3) they don't give you complimentary water during meals (even if u have booked hotel including meals).. n they charge 120MUR for small water bottle.. This was the worst part about the hotel.. 4) Room Service - On first day we asked for Dental Kit. I called reception at 8:30 am, then 9 am, then 9:30am and then finally went to recpetion and @ 10am finally I got a dental kit..and they had no reason for the delay.. 5) On one day it rained heavily in Mauritius and washroom was choked. Water overflowed from commode and I informed reception immediately that pls do something water is coming out.. Response from reception was "Sir, it's raining heavily outside, we will check soon" No-one came to check the room, not even got a call to know is everything OK... 6) Ants/Insects on the coffee table - I informed reception that there are so many ants in my room where coffee/wine is kept.. Receptionist said we will send someone soon.. It took them 3 hrs to send a housekeeping guy to get it cleaned and next day pesticide check was done 🤝 7) Adriana (I think this is the name of the lady who received us) - she is not at all helpful and is in her own attitude... The look on her face told us that she is least interested in helping us (may b she wanted to serve AMERICANS for DOLLARS).. She made us very uncomfortable on the very first day because of her attitude n behavior. We both ignored her for the rest of our stay (didn't want to spoil our mood) 8) ROOM - We booked sea facing room n it came out to be swimming pool facing room ... Also, there room is not upto the standard of 5Star property .. Westin was always a brand in my name and I have a memebership of the same in INDIA .. but Mauritius Westin ruined everything and i would urge not to book this hotel There are so many better hotels in the same vicinity.. 9) We asked them to extend are checkout by 1-2 hrs.. but they bluntly said no and said we are full... They showed least empathy and was not ready to help.. still we checked out and spent out time on the sunlounger 🙏 Pro of this hotel - 1) Food menu variety 2) Some of the staff is very supportive (kisan, the guy who took our luggage to room... Siwa - The spa lady etc) 3) Swimming pool 4) Water activities 5) SPA (nice it is) Read less
