Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Phoenix, Arizona

Virgin rating

The hotel

If ever a hotel was deliciously OTT, this is it. Its 39 acres host enough pools to swim in a different one every day of the week (and still have one spare); 2 championship golf courses; and dining experiences including a Sunday Brunch that will satisfy your hunger for a week, and High Teas with dainty cakes and finger sandwiches. The setting’s pretty lavish too – near Phoenix Mountain Preserve and Biltmore Fashion Park Mall. A Frank Lloyd Wright design masterpiece, with a 1930s pool rumoured to have been Marilyn Monroe’s favourite, Arizona Biltmore’s past is so fascinating they even host history tours. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past: modern musts here include complimentary WiFi, a fitness centre, a 92-foot waterslide, and five dining venues serving contemporary takes of classic dishes.

This is a very large hotel, and there are people everywhere! The lobby is always busy, as are the restaurants and bars. The pool can be a bit difficult to find a space to enjoy the pool and sun. This is a bit concerning, given that this is a luxury property. The rooms are modern and comfortable, with every modern amenity you can imagine.

We had a short stay and up to the morning we left we loved it. Great service, lovely food, the grounds were gorgeous. The building our room was in was very tired but the room itself was absolutely fine. The pool with the slides was overcrowded but a huge hit with our little boy. The big slide is BIG! Unfortunately our stay really was ruined by the entirely unhelpful check out experience. We had an 8pm flight back to the UK and were looking forward to a last day of sunshine. They couldn’t offer anything more than an hour beyond normal check out time which is fine but neither could they offer us ANY form of shower or changing facility after that time. That meant we had to shower at 12 and couldn’t use any of the facilities in the afternoon. It really was a shame - we’ve stayed in hotels all over the world and have never had a hotel unable to offer any help when we had a late flight. Worse, the reception staff just didn’t care or do anything to try to help. Read less

Everyone went over and above . When check in went past 4:30 and my room was not ready and I was dealing with a headache; I was immediately comped a villa suite with full kitchen right across from the pool as it readily available. Was great vacation.

What was once an iconic & serene desert getaway, the Biltmore is now a renovated mega-resort for corporate conferences and the 20-30yr old party crew. For $1000 a night, I expect a five star experience. Don't be fooled by the elegant lobby decor and friendly staff to check you in. We were placed in the "Terrace" building which needs a major update and our partial deck view was of dumpsters. McArthurs, one of the onsite restaurants is awful and pricey. Worst of all though is the pool experience - the Saguaro pool was atrocious. From 11am to 5pm, it played house/dance party banging loud music. We were told it was a corporate rule to play it loud - that if we didn't like it we could use of the other pools, none of which offered food OR restrooms. If you are seeking a relaxing sun vacation, the Biltmore is NOT for you. Bright spots were Renata's and the coffee Cafe for grab and go breakfasts. Read less
