Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Phoenix, Arizona

Virgin rating

The hotel

If ever a hotel was deliciously OTT, this is it. Its 39 acres host enough pools to swim in a different one every day of the week (and still have one spare); 2 championship golf courses; and dining experiences including a Sunday Brunch that will satisfy your hunger for a week, and High Teas with dainty cakes and finger sandwiches. The setting’s pretty lavish too – near Phoenix Mountain Preserve and Biltmore Fashion Park Mall. A Frank Lloyd Wright design masterpiece, with a 1930s pool rumoured to have been Marilyn Monroe’s favourite, Arizona Biltmore’s past is so fascinating they even host history tours. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past: modern musts here include complimentary WiFi, a fitness centre, a 92-foot waterslide, and five dining venues serving contemporary takes of classic dishes.

I visited the Az Biltmore around 7 years ago with my children and loved it. It used to be classy, with the Marilyn Monroe pools and décor, was a classy experience overall. I took my kids back 11/11/23 for my son's 18th birthday and was extremely disappointed with the room, the oversized, tacky waterslide and the high expense of the resort - that did not align with the experience. I chose the room with a fire pit and pool access from our patio on the first floor. I did not realize that the MM pools had been taken over with a huge, very untasteful waterslide. It's sad that the nostalgia of the great AZ Biltmore is gone. In addition, our shower leaked every time we used it- and the manager did give me a 15% discount on the base rate, the first night, but the total for our stay was over $2500 for two nights, so it was a very insignificant amount. The curtains were ripped, glass was dirty and paint peeling off the doors. (see pics) Also, I am a Diamond Hilton member, since I have only used Hilton when I frequently travel for work - but I am looking into other hotel brands now as they did not respect the amount of time and money that I have spent at Hilton hotels and did not honor the automatic upgrade policy - and did not give a discount for the shower the second night, which the bathroom was completely flooded and I truly wish that I would have chosen a different hotel for my sons special weekend. This experience was not the (over $1K per night) experience that I expected and I would not recommend this hotel for anyone in the future as it is expensive, small rooms, showers leak all over the floor and the lack of customer service is very disappointing. There are so many other hotels in the Phoenix area, I recommend that you look at other hotel chains. Read less

After a recent stay in September in their King Cottage with fire pit room, it was good to experience the difference this time on a quick stay in a King room (resort view) with a small dog, before catching a red eye. This time we booked through Amex FHR. 1. The King Cottage (with firepit) was nice enough but quite dated and it smelled a bit damp / musty. I'm not sure it was much better than the less expensive King resort room. The firepits are very exposed to people around and neighbors so I didnt think those rooms were honestly worth any more in price ultimately. The King room in the Paradise wing, had a terrace (shared) that oevrlooked the pool, also a much better location that the King Cottage we stayed in in September. 2. Rentata's Hearth restaurant is fun in the evenings and the food was fantastic. When we dined here on our September visit we had this immense lobster and steak platter for two - fabulous. Great Spanish guitar music (live) 3. The small ice cream snack place Cup & Cone is impressively stocked with fantastic gelatos as well as other snacks, coffees etc. 4. The outdoor bar, Spire Bar is in a neat setting but the sports channel / televisions in the bar area and around it were so loud that unless you are a die-hard sports fan, I would not recommend it. I thought it might be fun for an evening cocktail by the fire pits, maybe some fun music but it is defeinitely very sports-oriented (or atlease it was in late Nov on a Sunday evening). 5. Driving up to the hotel as led by GPS is extremely unimpressive, back roads, parking lots etc. So don't be discouraged as approaching it, it does get better. 6. I was there with Amex FHR and I was charged $95 for snacks purchased from cup & cone which should have been covered in the $100 F&B credit. I will call to rectify and it was probably just an oversight, unless the store does not count as F&B (which is good to know) Overall, rooms seem a bit dated and lots of coats of paint and touch ups are visible, but they are clean. Restaurants and amenities great. Staff was all wonderful from valet and check-in to the restaurants. Looking forward to our next stay in December when we will definitely try out that spa! Read less

I checked into the hotel with an excited heart. When I called for someone to take my luggage to my room, I discovered an ant on the phone in my room. As you may know, ants don't usually travel alone. When I looked around, I saw ants crawling on the carpet and along the edges of my room. When I informed the front desk, they said they would send an engineer. I was so surprised. A staff member came with ant spray, ready to use it. I was angry. Spraying ant spray, smelling it, and being in a dirty room after paying over $500, would you spend a night like that? I called the front desk again, asking to change rooms. They changed my room, gave me a new key, and when I arrived at the new room, I had already wasted over two hours and was exhausted. However, the new room also had lipstick stains on the cups, and there were uncleanable stains in front of the bed and on the sofa. But I didn't have the energy to complain. Afterward, I canceled one night of my two-night reservation and decided to stay in another hotel. Luckily, they allowed the cancellation. The problem started from there. Typically, Hilton hotels refund points immediately when you cancel. But not in this case. So, I had to spend money again to book another hotel. I complained, but the automated messages you send keep asking me for a review. That's annoying. Your service is worse than a two-star hotel. Read less

The citrus club is absolutely amazing. The service is attentive and consistent. Our need is nearly always anticipated before we ask. The room is bright with great view. We truly enjoyed our stay and look forward to come back to this paradise!

We were warmly welcomed by Logan at the front desk which was the beginning of an incredible stay. He was kind, professional, knowledgeable and courteous. A gorgeous and sprawling property! Immaculately maintained. The adults-only pool is a huge perk the workout facility is second to none for hotels I’ve seen.
