Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Phoenix, Arizona

The hotel

If ever a hotel was deliciously OTT, this is it. Its 39 acres host enough pools to swim in a different one every day of the week (and still have one spare); 2 championship golf courses; and dining experiences including a Sunday Brunch that will satisfy your hunger for a week, and High Teas with dainty cakes and finger sandwiches. The setting’s pretty lavish too – near Phoenix Mountain Preserve and Biltmore Fashion Park Mall. A Frank Lloyd Wright design masterpiece, with a 1930s pool rumoured to have been Marilyn Monroe’s favourite, Arizona Biltmore’s past is so fascinating they even host history tours. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past: modern musts here include complimentary WiFi, a fitness centre, a 92-foot waterslide, and five dining venues serving contemporary takes of classic dishes.

The room was spacious, comfortable, ave very clean. My sister and her grandson live in Scottsdale and came and hung out with us at the hotel each day. We enjoyed the pools and gardens, and all the yard games. My husband and I especially loved the Ocatilla concierge lounge. It was so nice to get up in the morning and have a short walk to enjoy our coffee on the patio and finishing our day relaxing with a glass of wine or beer on the patio also. Staff at the hotel were welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. I don't know what else I can say that hasn't already been said, it's just a lovely resort and we would love to return when we're in Phoenix again. Read less

Many of us tourists enjoy sitting out in the evening and watching the sunset, and nice to have more seating. We do enjoy the entertainment at the pool for the Memorial Day weekend, and were a bit surprised that we were given non-removable wrist bands to wear for the weekend. My husband did not think wearing this wrist band fit his style for dining out at the local restaurants, therefore we just kept them in our pool bag and showed them to the attendants/pool servers when asked to see them. For us it is always a pleasant and uplifting stay at the Biltmore! Read less

You can actually manage the thermostats in your room! Yay! The grounds are beautifully maintained without feeling fussy or pretentious. As you walk around, everyone on the staff says good morning or "Have a great day!" but it never sounded insincere or contrived. Only the bar staff at the Paradise pool was rushed or short with us. I have two minor complaints: I would have liked a well-marked trail to walk around the resort for exercise. I took walks, but ended up on the service roads or the back sides of buildings. Also, I would have liked to have been offered the chance to refuse daily linen service. Otherwise, it was a picture perfect stay! Read less

I found the public areas of some of the rooms to be extremely dated, even though they are in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, I think there are things they could do to bring the property more up to date. The room itself is fairly well appointed, but not as great as others I have been at in the area. Landscaping was nice but not stellar I do appreciate them keeping the feel of the original property, I just believe it could be updated in many ways. It felt, well, 1970s brown. The meals we had were a very good quality and they were all provided through the banquet service. The conference center and the conference rooms are also very well done, in fact I’d say they were probably better overall than the guest rooms themselves. Of course, I realize that the building I was in was decorated differently than some others so maybe next time our your Hilton Honors folks in s little better room..... The upshot is - for a Waldorf Astoria property it felt a little underwhelming facility wise but very good on the customer service front. Read less
