Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Phoenix, Arizona

The hotel

If ever a hotel was deliciously OTT, this is it. Its 39 acres host enough pools to swim in a different one every day of the week (and still have one spare); 2 championship golf courses; and dining experiences including a Sunday Brunch that will satisfy your hunger for a week, and High Teas with dainty cakes and finger sandwiches. The setting’s pretty lavish too – near Phoenix Mountain Preserve and Biltmore Fashion Park Mall. A Frank Lloyd Wright design masterpiece, with a 1930s pool rumoured to have been Marilyn Monroe’s favourite, Arizona Biltmore’s past is so fascinating they even host history tours. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past: modern musts here include complimentary WiFi, a fitness centre, a 92-foot waterslide, and five dining venues serving contemporary takes of classic dishes.

Love old historic hotels like this one. Much like the original Waldorf in NYC. They have also kept the rooms renovated and comfortable. This is a very large property so make sure you bring some good walking shoes. Quite a distance from the parking garage to the main building

We checked in just after 3 o’clock and were given room 6325 on the third floor of Ocatilla. It was a lovely large room overlooking villas and mountains via a Juliet balcony. Large comfy bed, desk and chair, other seating, table, fridge-style minibar, coffee machine and large mugs. We requested a kettle from housekeeping and it arrived promptly. A bottle of Prosecco on ice also arrived, which was a nice touch. The bathroom was large, with a huge bath, a separate shower, two washbasins and nice own-label toiletries There were sockets on the lamps next to the bed but they didn’t work: however there were others nearby. The WiFi was quite good and included in the resort fee. The decor, mostly in browns and reds was a bit bland in the room but there were some nice old photos of the hotel and a very neat light panel above the bed. We were told that there would be renovations happening during our stay, but the area taken out was huge, including lawns and a pool. However, we were not disturbed by construction noise as our room was well away from it. The public areas that were open were gorgeous and in great condition. The gym is well equipped and was busy but not crowded when we used it. The location was good for shopping and for access to major routes, although a car is essential. Self parking is available and we used it, although it is quite a walk from the hotel entrance. The Ocatilla Lounge was large and offered good food and a generous four hours of free beers and wine from 5-9 pm: these are served rather than help yourself. The food included beef tostados, short rib paninis, leek and gruyere quiche, rice and cheese balls. Service was very good and friendly throughout. Read less

We had been recommended to stay at this iconic luxury hotel by friends who had visited many years ago. The hotel is currently undergoing very extensive building work. This was not communicated to us when we booked several months ago and when we checked in described as a refresh , but is actually major with construction of new pool facilities etc taking place from dawn to dusk. Our original room looked out on a green fence and then the construction site and we were woken at 7:30am to the sound of pneumatic drills and large construction equipment. The hotel is a resort ond conference centre, but there does not seem to be any segregation between the two, so you almost feel like you should attend some of the sessions as almost everyone else there had lanyards or branded polo shirts for one of the many conferences taking place. In fact the hotel was so busy that the price of the room chosen had gone up and was in my view far too much for what we actually got. The access to the club lounge for Diamond HHonors members has now been revoked, so you can only get access by upgrading to a Club room. Overall we were very disappointed with the standard of the room, the noise and the food at the hotel. The only positive being the way that the Social Media team tried to resolve the issues that we had. Read less

Was happy to be back here after attending a conference in 2017. Reception was helpful and we received an upgraded room with 2 beds overlooking the pool. Room was clean and had a nice patio where we enjoyed lunch and dinner. The hotel is incredibly well kept, I was shocked when the bartender let me know the hotel has been running continuously since the 1920’s. No sign of wear and tear. Despite having rich history, the common spaces, event space, grounds and rooms are updated without giving up the timeless design and class the hotel has kept since opening. They also offer a happy hour resort tour which we want to try in the future. The hotel was undergoing an extensive renovation, yet we could hardly tell since they did well hiding the parts they were working on - we can’t wait to come back when everything is complete! Also Rueben at the Concierge was great to help with dinner plans. Abbey was very kind during check out as well, helping split the payment between multiple credit cards. We’ll be back! Read less

Stayed there not too long ago. The hotel itself is very historic. Very good facilities, rooms are spacious, The pool is very nice. Breakfast is excellent. The hamburger and salad at the restaurant are phenomenal! There is a photo wall next to the restaurant. Highly recommended!
