Boston Park Plaza

Boston, USA

The hotel

As synonymous with Boston as the eponymous tea party and cream pie, Boston Park Plaza has been a landmark on the city’s hotel circuit since it opened 90 years ago. Reinterpreted for the 21st century traveller with a $100 million mega-makeover, it now adds contemporary décor and mod-cons to its timeless elegance. And you’re in good company, with all bar two US Presidents staying here since it opened. It’s easy to see why, with a top-drawer location near Boston Common. Of course, they wouldn’t all have experienced today’s attractions, which include a mammoth 20,000 SF Health Club, the nightly cocktail hour (well 5 hours) in the Library, and the New England inspired dining of its Off the Common restaurant, with Boston’s signature lobster rolls a menu favourite.

My family and I had stayed at the Plaza several times - in the old days, before the recent renovations. Back then here was an "in-house" Legal Seafoods restaurant, a theater on a lower level hosting "Forbidden Broadway" and the large open lobby with a raised area at one end where one could have tea while listening to a string quartet and watching the comings and goings of the clientele. None of that existed when we returned earlier this month. Our room was quite small (we had once had a standard room with two baths!) and everything had been renovated from comfort and welcoming to sleek and cool. It is still a fine hotel but for us it has lost its character. The attentiveness and friendliness of the staff is still very much in tact, with a special nod to the Concierge in the lobby who added greatly to our enjoyment of the city. One minor flaw was at breakfast where I ordered French Toast with "pure Vermont maple syrup". Being from Vermont I thought that would make me feel more at home. When the plate arrived it was accompanied with a packet of Log Cabin corn syrup. I was told that they had run out of maple syrup and this was a temporary fix even though the menu didn't mention that. It is still a very nice hotel but not as nice as it used to be. Read less

Window wouldn't close, was reported to front desk and told it would be fixed, returned hours later to the window left wide open and still broken. Also had a broken fridge and safe. My food spoiled bc of the fridge. Room was a bit noisy bc of neighbors blasting music, but it didn't last long so it wasn't too much of a bother. Overall the hotel had… Read more

Image of the Tripadvisor rating An honest review about those “small rooms”

When I first read the reviews of this hotel I was already booked . I saw complaints about small rooms and I thought “Omg! What have I done .” I was worried- and that was completely unwarranted . Americans tend to book based on bed size . They see “queen bed” and they think “ 2 people .” That’s their fault. I booked a “cozy queen room” and that’s… Read more
When I first read the reviews of this hotel I was already booked . I saw complaints about small rooms and I thought “Omg! What have I done .” I was worried- and that was completely unwarranted . Americans tend to book based on bed size . They see “queen bed” and they think “ 2 people .” That’s their fault. I booked a “cozy queen room” and that’s what I got. I got a beautiful room, a queen bed, excellent service, excellent house keeping…. Not a detail was overlooked. My room was cozy- that meant it was perfect for one person- two people would not have fit - nor should I have expected them to . If you see reviews about small rooms- those are people who booked on bed size . This is a beautiful hotel, a safe hotel, a friendly hotel, and the service is over the top . If you aren’t sure, call before you book, but don’t blame them . My only negative from a truly great experience is that hotel WiFi kicks on and off. I ended up going into safety mode because the WiFi would suddenly kick off and I didn’t notice. Other than that - I highly recommend . Read less

Someone in my room was ill and vomiting, which can understandably be disturbing to nearby occupants, but we we're never asked to quiet down or given any kind of warning. Instead, Police show up to my door at 3am and DEMAND we leave the room immediately. Again, as embarrassing as someone getting ill and making a commotion at 3am is, not being asked to quiet down or given any warning at all is completely unacceptable. We were forced out onto the streets of Boston at 3am in the pouring rain with no place to go. Clearly this management staff have have no respect for their customers or their safety. Not providing at least ONE warning to remedy the situation is totally unacceptable. Read less
