Boston Park Plaza

Boston, USA

The hotel

As synonymous with Boston as the eponymous tea party and cream pie, Boston Park Plaza has been a landmark on the city’s hotel circuit since it opened 90 years ago. Reinterpreted for the 21st century traveller with a $100 million mega-makeover, it now adds contemporary décor and mod-cons to its timeless elegance. And you’re in good company, with all bar two US Presidents staying here since it opened. It’s easy to see why, with a top-drawer location near Boston Common. Of course, they wouldn’t all have experienced today’s attractions, which include a mammoth 20,000 SF Health Club, the nightly cocktail hour (well 5 hours) in the Library, and the New England inspired dining of its Off the Common restaurant, with Boston’s signature lobster rolls a menu favourite.

Upon check in, again I asked if the rooms were connecting, yes was the response. When going to our rooms the bellman pointed out one room and then across the hall the other. When I called the front desk I was then told there were no connecting rooms available. Things went downhill from there, I can’t even begin to go into all the details. I would never stay at Boston Park Plaza again. Read less

We stayed at the park plaza and the hotel itself is nice, the rooms are a bit small and the bathroom is really small BUT the modernization they have done makes it feel nice. The staff at the restaurant was very nice and helpful as was the staff at Check-in. The location is nice as it’s right near the public garden and commons. It is in a business district though so a lot of things close somewhat early. Chinatown is also nearby for food options. It’s a nice place and fun to be in. Now, this review was 4-5 stars as the restaurant and general staff were great. But, at checkout we had an issue. I had rented a vehicle and during check IN had asked clearly about parking and they stayed that self parking was included for FREE in the garage located across the street. I asked because I knew that one day I’d the stay I would have a rental vehicle. So I proceeded with that in mind. The day I went to get the rental, I asked AGAIN for confirmation just to be sure. This time I was told that VALET parking was included for free (I balked at this as usually valet isn’t free, but that’s what I was told.) So I parked there ONE night. So, at checkout I notice that I had been charged for valet $58 twice, and I let them know that they had told me parking was free. Again I was also bothered that it showed 2 valet charges even though I had a vehicle for literally one day. Ok, no problem, they fix it and we are good right? No! After taking one of the valet fees off, the front desk associate explains that they can’t take off valet parking as it’s a third party company (I just saw you take one fee off, so……) . I explained again that I was told it was included for FREE (had they not told me twice it was free I would have gladly taken the rental back the same day I got it). She explained that they don’t do that abs escalated it to the manager. Now, here is where it gets bad. The manager comes out and goes through the same spiel about parking not being free, asked me who told me that (I let them know it was the associate standing right next to her) and she asked him and said it may have been a miscommunication. We are all human, but for the question to have been asked at the front desk multiple times and to be given wrong answers each time? Not acceptable. So THEN, the manager says she can’t take it off, and says “ You already got a great rate through Expedia”! Who says that? That is completely UNACCEPTABLE! It wasn’t about the money it was about them being incorrect multiple times. But this “manager” made it personal and it was very rude. You never put the guest on the defensive like that. So I asked ok, since you can’t refund the 58 for the valet can’t you just take off two of the resort fee 25 each to make up for it? She said I’ll give you one. It was just ridiculous at this point so we left it at that. Seriously unprofessional and it ruined a nice trip to leave on that note. Read less

The Plaza is a very nice place to stay if not with a few caveats, especially as it pertains to sleeping. The lobby is quite pretty with a really lovely lounge and bar area to relax in. The staff at the front desk were incredibly friendly and helpful every time we needed something; I really can't say enough about how wonderful they were. The location itself is wonderful: very easily walkable to many of the main areas of Boston, especially Newbury St, Back Bay area, Copley and the Boston Commons and most other locations are a 10min drive or less. Yes, there is a $25 facility fee to be aware of that will be charged at the hotel in addition to your booking fee (even/especially if you book through a 3rd party site), but that is pretty standard throughout the city at any major hotel. Valet is $58 (also fairly standard in pricing for the city) but there are also several public city lots very close by if you don't mind a short walk. The rooms were nice enough- pretty standard but clean and it was extra nice having a fridge. The beds were comfy, but the pillows are feather down so be sure to ask for extra or bring your own if you prefer a stiffer pillow (my husband was in heaven, while I needed to request about 5 extras). Our only major complaint would be the air conditioning system- no matter how low we set the thermostat to, it continually would turn off and stay off until the room heated up before kicking on again. If you're a light or temperamental sleeper (me), this can be super problematic as I was constantly woken up with the change in white noise from the unit and/or because of the drastic change in temperature (take the covers off because it was too hot, wake up in 20 min because the A/C kicked back on and now I was freezing with no covers and repeat all night long). Our friends, who stayed in another room, had the same issue, so this is standard throughout the hotel. I also had read this in a few other reviews but thought it wouldn't be an issue because it wasn't a particularly hot weekend, but it definitely still was very disruptive to a light sleeper like myself. (It also emphasized the hallway noise we could hear when the system turned off, which only exacerbated my issues sleeping). Overall, there are a lot of reasons to stay here and a lot of reasons why this hotel is great, but with the price point and so many other options in Boston, as a light sleeper, I wouldn't personally return. However, if you are an easy or deep sleeper I would highly recommend the Plaza as an option in Boston. Read less

I promise it is very easy. You literally park across the street and walk may be 100 steps. - Ask for higher floor room with the view of the park - If you order cab/ uber be sure to tell them which entrance as the hotel has couple of entrances. Main and then on the side. - Irish pub downstairs has great food, drinks but most importantly great vibe. - Arlington street, Newbury street have lots of cafe's - You can hop to Boston Gardens/parks. Feels very safe to stay here. - Great lobby area - lively, nice feel, great seating and has a Starbucks attached to the lobby - excellent food choices if you just feel lazy to walk again after all the walking in Boston Read less
