The hotel

It's nice to be able to relax in the spacious comfort of your two-room suite, but the complimentary hot breakfast buffet and made-to-order omelette station will help get you out and set up for the day. At the Embassy Suites by Hilton Monterey Bay Seaside, you are a couple of blocks from the beach and just two miles north of Downtown Monterey. There are lots of attractions and activities along the Bay too, such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium or Steinbeck Museum, or head out in the car for 20 minutes or so for a bit of hiking, winery action or spa treats. The hotel’s 2-hour evening reception with complimentary cocktails and snacks is a great way to kick-off your evening. The Silver Tide Bar & Grill is in the atrium too, so why not drop in afterwards for some local California cuisine?

We booked a cash rate on a busy weekend for a single night stay. Throw in a $30 destination fee which includes parking, complimentary bike rentals and a few other amenities. One of which was a $15 credit to use at the bar or trade store. We held off on using the credit, intending to use it on our way out before checkout, to grab some snacks for the drive home. So my wife is at the trade store and overhears a customer being denied the credit and told that it had to be used by 10 P.M the night before. She approaches the front desk, who confirms it. She tells the agent (same agent that checked her in) that he didn't tell her it had to be used by 10. He tells her it's also on the benefits card (attached here for all to see). I ask for a manager, who defends the position that this credit has to be used night of, and that the grill closes at 10 P.M. Anyone who spends nights at hotels knows that a night stay encompasses the evening you arrive and the morning you leave. So for the card to be worded the way it is seems...IMO... deliberately misleading. Further, what is it to the hotel whether you use it in the evening or the morning? Why deny it except to save a penny? I had to ask myself what $15 is to me, and it isn't all that much. But then I had to ask myself what $15 is to the hotel, and I have to imagine it's even less. I know top tier status with Hilton doesn't have much meaning to begin with, but one might've hoped that'd make some semblance of difference in whether to hold ground against the customer, or relent. Good riddance. Room was clean, bed was extremely comfortable, breakfast was... breakfast. One of their three elevators was out of service, so rides up and down could take 4-8 minutes. Better choices include Hyatt Regency and the Monterey Marriott. Read less

We were visiting family for a weekend. I usually have good experiences with Embassy Suites so was rather surprised at what I experienced here. When I made the reservation, I requested an early check in. At that time, I also called the hotel directly and requested the same. (Their normal check-in is at 4pm but our flight was arriving shortly after 1pm.) When we arrived a little before 2pm, I asked about the early check in at the front desk. The clerk told me the room wasn't ready and she had no way of knowing when it would be but would let me know when it was. (She was looking at her computer screen when she said this. I guess they can't call housekeeping and ask for something to be worked out of sequence. Or they had no way to request this in their system when I made the request?) We confirmed she had my correct mobile number and we took our luggage and waited in the lobby. The property appears to have been recently remodeled and was very nice. The large indoor atrium had a lot of light. There is a small shop in the hotel when you can purchase, drinks, snacks and assorted overpriced souvenirs. At 3:30, I hadn't heard anything so I went back to the front desk and asked about the room. The lady I had spoken to before was no longer on duty and the person I asked said that the room was indeed ready. Apparently the clerk on duty when I checked in hadn't passed along that there was someone waiting for a room so I have no idea of how long we sat in the lobby for no reason. This isn't the type of customer service I expect at a Hilton but maybe that's the post-COVID norm now? I answered the survey I received after we checked in and indicated my dissatisfaction. I got a reply from "management" stating that their check-in time is 4pm. No kidding! I'm aware of that but I thought (silly me) that a request well in advance would make a difference and that when I was told I'd be notified when the room was ready that I would be. But apparently my expectations were inflated on both accounts. The room was nice (we paid extra for a suite) and, even though it had a bay view, I don't recommend that others pay any extra for that. The property is a good ways from the bay with a highway in between it and the bay. If you do get a bay view and want to see anything, bring a pair of binoculars. (Seriously! I wish I had brought mine.) I will say that the free breakfast was very good. Lots of choices and they had an omelet/pancake station. But if you want that, get there early or be prepared to wait in a long line. Other than that, there were plenty of choices with little to no wait. We didn't take advantage of the free cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at happy hour so I can't rate that. Overall, the property itself was acceptable. However, after my experience with the staff, I'd obviously never stay there again. And if I have another experience like this at another Hilton property, I'll be looking for another default chain when I'm traveling. Read less

Embassy suites’ famous happy hour(reception) where you can get all the 6$ Chardonnay you like for an hour and half. Which is what you need after braving the aquarium. The included breakfast is nice for my indecisive family as well but it gets crowded quick, our two year old had us down there at 7:00am and it was great though. We got our room as an upgrade because our original room was not ready at 4:30pm. They put us on the 11th floor in rm 1109. The room works great for a small family and at times the view was real nice. I would recommend for a family of 3-4 for a couple of days in the area. Read less

Besides nearly $400 for a room we had tacked on an extra $35 where we COUF rent bikes for two hours and get beach chairs. I told the lady on the phone we will never use the bikes or the chairs. Included in the $35 was free parking. We had handicap so I don't think that would matter. We got 2 bottles of water for that charge and $15 off in the… Read more

Breakfast was fine. Happy hour is a nice touch. We ate dinner in the restaurant. Food was good. A dark haired girl a couple of courses and her perfume was so overwhelming we had to hold our noses after she left and it over powered the food. I like the separate room and two TVs. Overall a nice stay. Read less

This property is extremely close to the airport (7 minute drive). It's physical location may not be the most beautiful spot but the convenience to hop on and off the freeway to Carmel by the Sea and airport make up for it. There are views of water from your room (depending on which room you have). Unfortunately, the windows were so dirty that trying to take a picture of the view was impossible. The rooms were clean and well appointed (as most all Embassy Suites are). Made to order breakfast downstairs was fantastic and there is plenty of seating. Staff worked hard cleaning off tables and keeping spaces available. Bar downstairs was very expensive - drinks were priced higher than expected. If you want to leave the car in the parking lot, Uber is readily available to take you into town for wine tastings and lovely dinners. No issues find an Uber to or from. If you're looking for a bite to eat, across the parking lot is a Chili's which our Uber driver told us was very good. Chili's is a relatively consistent chain. When returning to the airport - don't bother to leave too early. It's literally 7 minutes or less away and there is a gas station on the way to gas up the rental for the return. Was the easiest return. Oh and if you are out on an early AM flight - TSA doesn't open up until about 30 minutes before the first flight leaves. You will end up sitting around until TSA is ready. I would have given this property 5 stars if they had clean windows (all of the windows were quite dirty to see out aside from the lobby) and the location isn't very pretty. Read less
