Monterey Tides, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Monterey, California Coast

The hotel

With a relaxed vibe and those intoxicating bay and ocean views, you’ll get the quintessential Monterey holiday at this waterfront boutique hotel. It has a privately-owned beachfront, ideal for making sandcastles and toasting s’mores by the bonfire. Keep the camera ready too — if you’re lucky you may spot seals, sea lions and breaching whales. The hotel's soulful tapas bar, with more sweeping views, serves up craft cocktails and beers on tap. And the casual waterfront restaurant is a great spot to watch the sun set over the water whilst tucking in to fresh seafood.

Horrible experience. For a variety of reasons we ended up having our entire reservation cancelled. Staff explained the cancellation policy but she was pretty awful from the start. I asked if there was any way to salvage the last night. She told me to go through the booking company (Hotwire). Trying to keep my cool and with a glimmer of hope I called Hotwire right away and explained the situation. Hotwire agent immediately calls the hotel but after 15 minutes reports back to me that the manager kept hanging up on her. That’s right, the Hotwire agent had to make repeated calls to the hotel. I guess I understand why I was turfed to Hotwire. Monterey Tides staff wanted me off the phone. They had no intention of working with Hotwire. I’m at a total loss as to why they would repeatedly hang up on the agent. Read less

We did all sorts of things from driving my jeep up the mountain logging roads, hiking on mountain streams, riding my motorcycle around town in Roseville, bicycling all over the place. The best was the last, going to Monterey to see the beach, the aquarium, And just hang out. The hotel was fantastic and the staff were really kind and professional with a sense of wanting to help you and make sure you have a good experience. It meant everything to us because this was a very special reconnection. Read less

If you don't book an ocean view room, you'll see and hear the freeway from a small cave-like room. Though still small, ocean view rooms are a major improvement from the other side of the hotel. The waves are beautiful, but if you don't have the shade drawn, every guest who walks by your room can see directly into your room. The daily resort fee is also a bit of a mystery as it's unclear what it actually provides aside from two bottles of water per day and basic wi-fi. Still, the beds were comfortable and the sound of the ocean was like having a white noise app lulling us to sleep. It's not within walking distance of downtown or Cannery Row, but it's a short ride. The hotel was dated and noisy (unless you are on the ocean side and the waves block out noise from other rooms and people). The rooms are small, tight and dated, poorly insulated and not very pleasant to stay in. The thermostat did not work well and kept going off so that the room was cold all night. You could hear the showers, water pipes, and people in other rooms. As the room was poorly inserted, very little outside noise from people and traffic was blocked. The best aspect of the stay was the staff. They were all helpful, friendly and kind. This type of staff should be working in an upscale hotel. Read less
