Monterey Tides, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Monterey, California

The hotel

With a relaxed vibe and those intoxicating bay and ocean views, you’ll get the quintessential Monterey holiday at this waterfront boutique hotel. It has a privately-owned beachfront, ideal for making sandcastles and toasting s’mores by the bonfire. Keep the camera ready too — if you’re lucky you may spot seals, sea lions and breaching whales. The hotel's soulful tapas bar, with more sweeping views, serves up craft cocktails and beers on tap. And the casual waterfront restaurant is a great spot to watch the sun set over the water whilst tucking in to fresh seafood.

The hotel lobby, guest viewing area, and lobby bar were totally closed due to demolition/remodeling. There was no mention of this when we book our rooms. Access to our rooms was only by elevator and then one flight of stairs. All the fun parts of the hotel were closed off. There should be a law about not disclosing a situation of heavy disruptive remodeling. Shame on them. Read less

I booked as a prepaid room, however, I was asked to swipe my credit card in case of incidentals for $100 per day. I did not use any other services, did not use the restaurant and had an additional charge of $144.66 and I do not know why. There are over $300 in charges I did not authorize and did not sign for. I called the hotel and no one… Read more

I called the hotel and no one answers the phone and the voicemail is full. I had to contact my credit card company to dispute the additional charges. The hotel is under total renovation so the access is a total mess and construction started up at 7 am with power tools and noise right above my room. The desk clerk made it right on parking fees and resort fee due to the construction, but the unauthorized charges are a big concern. Aside from all that, the location is awesome due to ocean access. Terrible experience we came here to relive our honey moon and was so disappointed. They charged my card $300.00 more than the quoted price and wouldn’t make it write. The place is totally under construction and it’s a maze trying to get anywhere. No coffee in the room or microwave. No hot water to shower. They charge for parking almost $50:00 a… Read more

Construction and scaffolding everywhere. No hot water. $40 per night hidden fees for parking. no coffee maker or microwave in the room. No pool or hot tub available. Accesses are blocked and you have to take long ways around. Was way more expensive at the desk checking in than it was when quoted on the phone.

It’s important to begin this with a compliment to Sheevani at the front desk, who provided outstanding customer service. It’s important to begin this with a compliment to Sheevani at the front desk, who provided outstanding customer service. While alone, I observed her checking in guests, trouble shooting problems for existing guests and answering the phone. With each person she was fully present, and enjoyable. The hotel is finally getting the remodel it deserves. The new room was beautiful. However, the shower was not even warm each day. (We stayed 4- nights) We typically get a 1st floor partial- ocean view room and love the sound of the ocean at night. We had to take a 1st floor garden view room which honestly was not better than a motel -6 for the amount of noise: hammering from above from 7:00am to 7:00pm, noise from the room next store until late, late at night. Being on the ocean side really drowns out the sounds. If you need an ADA room- be sure and clarify you are on the first floor or like all the other guests right now, you will have to go up the elevator, then down the stairs to get to your room, while they remodel. Glad this hotel is finally getting updated, as the views and beach are one of a kind. Right now, however, it is not worth 100.00 a night. Read less
