Monterey Tides, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Monterey, California Coast

The hotel

With a relaxed vibe and those intoxicating bay and ocean views, you’ll get the quintessential Monterey holiday at this waterfront boutique hotel. It has a privately-owned beachfront, ideal for making sandcastles and toasting s’mores by the bonfire. Keep the camera ready too — if you’re lucky you may spot seals, sea lions and breaching whales. The hotel's soulful tapas bar, with more sweeping views, serves up craft cocktails and beers on tap. And the casual waterfront restaurant is a great spot to watch the sun set over the water whilst tucking in to fresh seafood.

I had stayed here back in 2002 and my oh my, how this place has gone downhill. We arrived around 3pm (posted check in time) and were told that our room was not ready because of extra COVID cleaning. We weren't able to get in until 5:30. After we found our room, we realized that they had changed us from the ground floor room with a patio open out to the ocean, to a 2nd story room with no patio at all. I had specifically called weeks ahead to book the patio room so that we could meet local family for birthday cake outside our room. Staff didn't care- said too bad that they changed the booking without telling me. I could take it or leave it, and no compensation was offered. Walking to the room, we noticed garbage over flowing everywhere- from the cans along the walk ways, cans left outside doors, cans in the parking lot. They were like that the entire 3 day stay- trash everywhere. The next disappointment was the room. The carpets were sticky, there was obvious splatter of fluid all over the pictures on the wall and bathroom wall, hairs on the bathroom floor, and mildew in the corner of the shower. The front door didn't close properly so that the wind wind whistled through the gap and it was tough to know if it was really locked. The website had said that each room had a coffee maker- that's part of what the resort fee covered. There were no coffee makers; staff said too bad, it was a COVID issue. Again, no compensation for the false advertising. The pool and hot tubs were also closed, despite no warning on the website. The seating areas on the beach side were blocked off with caution tape so you had to go down to the public beach, which was packed with people and filthy. There were dirty diapers and a dead pelican that was rotting in front of the hotel all 3 days of our stay. I was hopping mad at this point, so we tried to go to the bar- Waddaya know, it was closed too- but they had a make shift set up to buy pre-prepared drinks on Saturday. I am not even kidding- the prices ranged from $30 per drink to $50 per drink. PER DRINK, not pitcher. Are you kidding me? After I already shelled out the cash for the room, the resort fee with no resort amenities despite what they advertised- and now I am supposed to pay that for a single cocktail? That was just insult on top of injury. And no complaints to staff made any difference. I should have known when I saw the closed pool and it was shaped just like a coffin that the weekend was not destined to be successful. Do yourself a favor- stay somewhere else. What a horrible experience for a birthday getaway. Read less

Motel 6 looks better than the dark room we booked. Large floor to ceiling windows face the busy hallway, so people walking by can see everything. Pulling down the blackout curtains was the only way to have privacy, yet there weren’t enough lights. Room felt like a cave. Bathroom was old and not remodeled. Shower curtain barely covered the shower.… Read more

Pulling down the blackout curtains was the only way to have privacy, yet there weren’t enough lights. Room felt like a cave. Bathroom was old and not remodeled. Shower curtain barely covered the shower. AC and toilet flushing were extremely loud. Walls weren’t sound proof at all; heard neighbors TV all night and hallway conversations constantly. The only thing redeeming was the location next to the beach but you can just drive there. Would not recommend this place. Read less

We stayed here with our dog & absolutely loved the fantastic customer service from all of the staff, especially Vivian in the front office! We also liked the hotel layout, convenient parking, amazing beach & bar view. Plus, the room was very clean. We'll definitely be back!

This is NOT an upliftying place to stay, even when the weather is good. Someone decided in their last make over (which must have been 14 years ago) to paint everything a dark dreary grey. OMG, very very derpressing. They play all kinds of games with their rates... we found our $300 room for $120 after we checked in. Terrible. If you're going to Monterey with your sweetie or your family, you can do a lot better in Montery or Carmel for a lot less. So disappointed, but we call it like it is. Read less
