Monterey Tides, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Monterey, California Coast

The hotel

With a relaxed vibe and those intoxicating bay and ocean views, you’ll get the quintessential Monterey holiday at this waterfront boutique hotel. It has a privately-owned beachfront, ideal for making sandcastles and toasting s’mores by the bonfire. Keep the camera ready too — if you’re lucky you may spot seals, sea lions and breaching whales. The hotel's soulful tapas bar, with more sweeping views, serves up craft cocktails and beers on tap. And the casual waterfront restaurant is a great spot to watch the sun set over the water whilst tucking in to fresh seafood.

This hotel is nice, great view of the ocean. Easy access to the beach. Sheeuani at the front desk was very accommodating. The city is currently shut down due to Covid, but a good ocean view and take out was helpful for our trip. We would come back.
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Beware Pet Owners ... Loud Fireworks

I talked to the front desk before reserving a room with pets for New Years. I asked the lady if there are fireworks at NYE. She informed me that no there weren't any. I talked to the front desk before reserving a room with pets for New Years. I asked the lady if there are fireworks at NYE. She informed me that no there weren't any. I have a large golden who gets manic when there are constant fireworks, and my town is like a war zone at the 4th and NYE. So I was debating whether to stay at the Tides or go into Monterey or Carmel (prices the same or less). But since the front desk said no fireworks would be heard, I booked one of the pet friendly rooms ... the pet rooms only face the town, not the beach. Needless to say, the loud fireworks started around 10pm, so I had to give my pup her medication. Still anxious, we headed over to the beachside. With the building blocking the noise and the crashing surf, there was some relief. But we couldn't stay outside forever ... so we are all in the bathroom floor regretting my decision to stay here. By the way, food was so so. I think they changed the menu. Read less

Came here for the first time with my husband and was so happy with the experience that I came back weeks later with my Mom. Great views and easy beach access. Sheevani at the front desk was so friendly and accommodating!

No hot water when we were there. Resort fees was a ripped off. We had that waived due to no hot water and no pool. Can't use the beach .. too windy and cold. We ended up going somewhere else after the first night.

Don’t be fooled by the low rate - you get what you pay for. In our case, no hot water our first night there with NO reimbursement. **The Story** If you’re like me, then your any DECENT hotel experience will include, at a minimum, friendly staff, decent room interiors, and running hot water. So by extension, if you’re like me, then Monterey Tides is the perfect place to deliver you a HORRIBLE hotel experience. The FIRST day we arrived we were told that all amenities were closed and that Monterey Tides would not waive the resort fee. That’s fine — I could look past that since the hotel is right on the beach. Fast forward to when we check in to the tiny room — again, I can look past the tiny room since we’re right on the beach. But as I take my first trip in to the bathroom, I look at the paint. It’s clear to me that in an effort to “remodel”, the hotel at some point decided to paint over old walls. They did a terrible job - there was paint overlapping everywhere. But again — I could look past the shoddy aesthetics since the hotel is right on the beach. **The Climax: No Hot Water, Unhelpful Staff** Now fast forward to one of the most important parts of a hotel experience — your first shower after a long day at the beach. This is supposed to be a time when you relax, unwind, and prepare for bed. I turn on the shower and set it to the hottest setting. I wait one minute, check the water, not hot yet. I decide maybe I’m being impatient. I wait an additional 5 minutes. Something’s wrong - that water is still not hot! We decide to call the front desk and inform them about the hot water. They first start by telling us that we’ll need to wait until the next morning for hot water. They were ready to sweep this under the rug because that’s simply not acceptable. So we pressed asking, “We’re very unhappy right now — is there another room where we can take a shower?” They respond by letting us know that the ENTIRE hotel is out of hot water. It’s only after we express our exasperation that the front desk staff offered to waive…. wait for it… the resort fee. The resort fee that they refused to waive in the beginning. So if you’re like me, you EXPECT hot water to be available during your hotel showers. If you’re like me, you already expect resort fees to be waived when there are no hotel amenities available. Do yourself a favor… avoid this hotel and don’t be fooled by the low rate. Get yourself to an inn in Carmel or another hotel at Monterey. That said, if you’re willing to sacrifice running hot water during your showers, this is the hotel for you. Read less
