Shutters on the Beach

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Amenities include the gorgeous ONE Spa offering a wide range of signature treatments, including the RED FLOWER HAMMAM detoxifying treatment. There’s also a swimming pool to laze by and a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. One Pico is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, showcasing a seasonally changing menu of modern American cuisine. If a more laid-back atmosphere appeals, however, beach-side cafe Coast more than fits the bill and is open from morning until night. For afternoon tea and evening cocktails, look no further than the lobby lounge, a cosy, intimate space that is popular with locals and guests alike.

I was excited to stay at Shutters after hearing about it for years. I give the hotel a mixed review. You can’t beat the location, right on the beach and a few steps from the action at the pier. The lobby scene was very active and a bit chaotic and noisy. The fireplaces are a nice touch and added warmth. The staff is super accommodating too. That said, I was a bit underwhelmed for the price point. The staff seems very busy, at their whits end and over worked. They put me in a different class of room than I booked and although they called it an upgrade, it was ground level and too noisy and I had to switch. It took the entire day for another room to come available. The room was just OK; nothing special although the bed was super comfortable. I ordered room service and that was good. All said, an OK experience but I’m not anxious to return. Read less

One of the best hotels I’ve experienced. Amazing location with first-rate facility, service, and rooms. Food was wonderful, and the restaurant is a prime place to spot some top celebrities. It all made for a very enjoyable and memorable experience. I didn’t want to leave!

Shutters on the Beach is a great place. We stayed two nights and enjoyed our stay. From the time we pulled up to valet to the time we left, all employees were very friendly and attentive. Probably one of the best check in/check out experiences we've had at a resort. Very informative and everyone refers to you like they know you. Restaurants were great at Shutters and their sister hotel next door. A couple of the disappointments were the pool area, lobby restaurant, and condition of rooms. For the price of the place the rooms are a disappointment and need to be updated. They are nice, but not for the price. We had a room on the top floor with awesome ocean view and two patios, but besides that the floor was splitting due to missing transition strip, stains in shower, and bathroom only had one sink. The rooms were well appointed, but just felt like they were behind the times compared to similar prices resorts we've stayed. The lobby bar and pool service had very inattentive service, and the pool bar stops serving food and drinks around 3:30pm. I would recommend this place with the understanding that it has an "old" warm feel to it. We had a great time and would go back, but wish the rooms reflected the price point better. Read less

Loved this spot on the Beach! Beautiful Beachfront hotel with excellent attention to customer service. Lobby is warm and inviting with several fire places and sitting areas! They have 2 restaurants to choose from that are both excellent . Beautiful pool and rooftop and the views are amazing ! We loved this place!

We had lunch at the restaurant at a table looking directly on to the oceanfront. The location is wonderful. The food was outstanding and the service was extremely professional. The tuna was particularly good.
