Shutters on the Beach

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Amenities include the gorgeous ONE Spa offering a wide range of signature treatments, including the RED FLOWER HAMMAM detoxifying treatment. There’s also a swimming pool to laze by and a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. One Pico is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, showcasing a seasonally changing menu of modern American cuisine. If a more laid-back atmosphere appeals, however, beach-side cafe Coast more than fits the bill and is open from morning until night. For afternoon tea and evening cocktails, look no further than the lobby lounge, a cosy, intimate space that is popular with locals and guests alike.

Shutters went out of their way to make my parents' 50th anniversary trip unforgettable. They went above and beyond any reasonable expectations to provide personal attention and accommodate their/our needs. The extra effort was especially touching for us because this may well be their last long trip together, and Shutters provided the note their trip is ending on. I cannot express my gratitude enough, except by maybe letting people know about this jewel and being a regular guest whenever we're in LA. Read less

Shutters is not a 5 star hotel. And while it is not a bad hotel by any means it is just not right to charge customers 7-800 USD a night for what seems like a suped up Best Western. While our room was nicely decorated it was essentially “ below ground” located below the pool terrace. This needs to be specified before being hoodwinked into a 7 day non refundable deposit / cut off reservation for one of your basic rooms at that astronomical rate. The biggest problem for us was not our room however, but was that thr common areas are run down, dirty and tired. The restaurant service is slow and sloppy, and the pool area is filthy and overcrowded. Add to this two loud and consecutive evening “events” also occupying hotel space that room paying customers would count on being able to use but could not , and the whole thing amounted to a disaster. The pool terrace tiles were so dirty that I did not even want to spend time there. Overall the place feels so grungy. The front terrace restaurant was similarily unkept with leaves everywhere, stained cushions, and an overall tired aspect that frankly can not possibly warrant the sort of room rates you charge. My husband and I felt totally ripped off as we were enticed by the lovely but now misleading website photos of the pool area and public spaces that frankly are just sub par and sad. One has many options in LA for hotels rooms at the rate Shutters charges a night. My advice is to seek better value for money where service is top notch and the common areas are chic and glamorous worth of their stars and where the rooms are 5 star quality as well. Read less
