The hotel

After a big renovation at the end of 2019, you’ll get to check out a brand new Union Square hotel. The Clift Royal Sonesta is a stunning meeting of the glamourous Italian Renaissance-style and the beautiful modern design, reflective of this cutting edge city. The legendary Redwood Room, always a San Francisco favourite, has been refreshed while preserving its iconic history, and there's a new bistro to check out. Even the bees are busy producing honey on the rooftop, ready to add to your drinks and salads.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Destination Fee in city hotel without working wifi

We did not take up the offer. We opted for a courtyard view room for a quieter and less noise. However, we noticed on the floor plan. We were assigned the smallest room on the floor. The floor plan (fire escape plan) should be in scale, the rooms are all varies in sizes. If i knew ahead of time, i would request to a slightly larger room in the same room category that we paid for. All these resort fees and destination fees are extra cost. If i were to pay for "destination fees" for wifi, i expect the wifi to work. However, it was not the case on our first day. We did not get an offer to waive the fee on our first day either. I just read up their "destination fees" include $10 Food and Beverage credit/day/room and 2 bottles of water. None of this were disclosed when we check in. Now i feel ripped off. I have to give them a 5 stars on the toiletry products. Typically hotel shampoo just doesn't do it for my hair, but theirs do. The house keeping did not replenish any of the products, it was a bummer. Read less

chose this location because we were traveling to San Francisco to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as part of a 5 day bday trip. the hotel was conveniently located less than a minute walk to the theater. the hotel location is great for a trip to the city. restaurants and shopping around every corner. hotel itself was absolutely stunning!!! lobby was clean, the fitness center was excellent and the breakfast selections were delicious. the stay wasn't without issues. the computer apparently froze during check in and had to be rebooted resulting in my credit card needing to be authorized twice. eventhough i showed the front desk attendant that the first authorization for 2k had already gone through on my account, she still needed to re-authorize my card AGAIN resulting in another 2k hold placed on my credit card (wasn't too happy about that seeing as the 4k+ hold didn't release until after i checked out) it was 72 degrees in the room and we notified the front desk shortly after arriving that the A/C was not working. went down 2 hours later to check the status of the maintenance engineer who was called again by front desk staff and finally arrived 30 minutes later, shined a temp gun at the air vent, said yep...its 72 degrees in here, helped us open all 4 windows in the room before stating that he was going to reset a chiller and check back later (by the time we checked out 5 days later...the A/C was still not working) thankfully having the windows open helped cool the room, however having windows open the entire 5 day stay...the noise from the street and construction below was a bit of an annoyance at times. the room however was ahhhhmaaaazing!!! gorgeous, spacious and clean with a great view of the city from the 11th floor suite. housekeeping was phenomenal and refreshed the room daily. the bday trip was so fantastic that the very few hotel issues we had didn't ruin our stay. front desk staff were very friendly and did what they could to make sure we were happy. highly recommend the suites when staying and would definitely stay again if ever in the area. The quality of the materials and finishes - from the flooring, to the furniture and even the bathroom fixtures was all clearly selected with great care and attention. The room was spacious and comfortable. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud. The staff on the front desk were kind, attentive and helpful, actually taking time to engage with guests and addressing them by name. If I had to pick one minor point for improvement- change out the Keurig coffee machines for Nespresso. If that’s not possible then at the very least get some better keurig pods. This was a very minor point because honestly I couldn’t find anything else to improve with the experience. I will absolutely stay here again if back in San Francisco. Read less

I think this will be our go-to hotel every time we visit San Francisco. It's located in Union Square, within walking distance from public transportation. Shout-out to Albert, the bell man. Albert made sure he knew which places we were interested to visit so then he told us the best tips to get there, suggested more points of interest, and overall went out of his way to give excellent service throughout our stay. That's how you make a great first impression! Read less

No help in taking luggage to the rooms and when requested they didn't really want to bother so we ended up taking luggage up ourselves. We received no help in other parts of our stay - really disappointing - no attempt to help or greet us. This is a 2-3 star hotel with 4 star rooms and 5 star prices! It definitely was not value for money. I wouldn't recommend this hotel again nor wouild I stay here again. Considering we planned this trip months in advance it is frustrating to spend so much money on a hotel and expect at least some kind of service but instead receive none. Read less
