The hotel

As soon as you arrive, you’ll see the natural stone and soothing wood panelling, like a giant Alpine-style retreat. This one overlooks the picturesque Sierra mountain range and Lake Tahoe. You can even enjoy these views from the picture windows in your room which, handily, is soundproofed to make sure you get a good night’s sleep. You may need it after exploring Heavenly's trails. Plus there’s so much to do here, from gambling in the casino and taking in one of the shows, to dining in fabulous restaurants (or in the all-you-can-eat buffet if you’re really hungry!). If all that sounds far too strenuous by half, fear not. The spa treatments, steam room, heated pool and sauna are all perfect for relaxing.

The rooms are tired (furniture, carpets, wallpaper, etc.), not very clean (lots of dust and dirt in the room behind the couch, night stands, etc, dirty windows), and just dated. We self parked which costs $20/day and there was a daily resort fee for a gym that needs updating along with the pool. Positive points are: check-in was smooth and courteous, room was quiet even though we were next to the elevator (that was our choice), bell/valet were very friendly and the location is great with an underpass to Harveys and just a few steps to Lucky Beaver, Heavenly Village, and dining options. Wow, this place really got bad. So sad and surprising that the Caesar's "Empire" left this place to rot -- literally. Check-in was awful. When we arrived approximately 6:30 p.m. after travelling across the country to get here, there was no one at all at the front desk and the VIP lounge was closed so I attempted to check in at a kiosk. Unfortunately, the kiosk was not working properly, and it could not read my license. I asked the person at the valet if anyone was working at the front desk and after a full 5 minutes someone came out of the back room to assist me. I was given a room on the 4th floor and when we opened the door OMG. Gross to say the least. Completely filthy, beat up and just horrible -- it seriously looked like 50 cats got into a fight in this room. We went back down to the lobby and got the room changed to a different one, also on the 4th floor. Still horrible but we conceded. Pictures attached. Our room was filthy, dusty, dirty windows, scratched furniture, stains. Really bad in our eyes. NO housekeeping in 5 days and that is not disclosed upon check-in. On the second day I inquired about getting the room cleaned and when I was told no housekeeping I requested clean towels and tissues for the remainder of the trip. In the evening when I went back to the room I had to call again since nothing was delivered. Upon delivery only 4 towels were delivered, no washcloths, no hand towels and no tissues. What a ridiculous issue to have to deal with on vacation. We had to leave our trash out in the hallway for pick-up and that made a nice walk to the elevator going down a hall full of garbage. We ate at the River Cafe and that was extremely overpriced for mediocre/below standard food. I had a $20 bowl of wonton soup and the roast pork in it was 95% fat and grizzle. Gross. Not to slight anyone over the quality of the food but the food servers were fabulous as well as the bartenders, but they were the only workers who weren't 100% miserable here. The food court was also ridiculous, ran out of soup at the Asian place and on Sunday night the food court was shut down. In 5 days, I only was offered 1 drink at the slots. That was the only time I actually even saw a waitress. The bartenders were overworked to the tee. I normally had to wait at least 10 minutes to get a drink. The drink situation only took me away from the machines to gamble here and saved me alot of gambling $$. I have nothing good to say about this place, but for a very few employees, and won't stay here again and I definitely can't recommend it. It's just such a shame this run down hotel is in such a beautiful area. Read less

Linda from VIP lounge is the BEST! Our room is clean and we just love staying here whenever we are in Tahoe. Food at Fridays Station is amazing! Always nice to stay and relax at this hotel. Location is near to shops, walking distance.

I’m actually surprised that this hotel has paying guests. The guests that have given any positive feedback either have significantly lower standards than myself or Harrahs has beautifully renovated rooms with outstanding customer service hidden from a large percentage of the guests. The staff and owners are well aware that this poor old hotel is in need of major renovations at the least soft renovations for the rooms/hallways/lobby. First off, making the room reservations online took over 40 minutes! I ended up calling and speaking to a CSR who thankfully was able to handle booking my two night room reservation which was “difficult” because I had one comp room and the other night my teacher discount was supposed to be applied. The CSR told me that Harrahs online isn’t set up for that type of reservation. Besides going over thoroughly all associated costs including taxes and resort fees, and asking if I’m “self” parking my car, the CSR never informed me of any fees for overnight parking. In addition, the website never had a pop up advising the closure of both Harvey’s and Harrahs hot tubs and the CSR never mentioned it during our conversation even though I told her how much I was looking forward to sitting in the hot tub! Once we got to the front desk, the clerk advised me that I would have to check out after the first night and check into another room for my second night stay. I asked how I could avoid this and she told me to pay an additional $36..so I paid. The front desk clerk reviewed all costs including a $75 incidental fee but never mentioned parking. The room was extremely dated, perhaps from the late 80s early 90s, no hot water in the shower in bathroom #1 and no hot water in bathroom #2 sink, furniture looked as if it came from a thrift store, the internet was unavailable to connect to during our stay on both of our phones, the TV is very small and old, dust was everywhere, the mattress however, was nice and firm. But it wasn’t until the morning when I was on the floor foam rolling that I noticed how truly filthy the room was! There were toenail clippings in several areas, there seemed to have been a dog that recently stayed in our room given the amount of dog hair in the carpet, the garbage appeared to have some type of dried liquid on the outside. I called the FD and she offered to move me which I just paid $36 not to move! I asked if housekeeping could come by and clean instead but that was not an option. So we packed up and moved. The next room was not much better minus the toe nail clippings, hair, and hot water issues. At no time did the CS agent offer to remove the $36. I had to ask and I felt as though I was asking a huge favor! We tried making dinner reservations at Sapori’s restaurant that evening using the landline phone in our room. After 4 attempts, I was successful. If there were a couple of things that went awry, that’s understandable but, this was really obnoxious. We were there a few months ago staying for one night. I noticed the lobby downstairs women’s restroom in need of immediate attention..leaking water and a foul odor. I reported the issue. During this stay, however the same foul odor and leaky water but now a pool of this foul smelling water had accumulated over months! There is no striving to do better. If there was, Harrah’s hotel would make the necessary investments needed to restore this beautiful landmark to a functioning hotel that guests are excited to go to. I have been staying at Harrahs for over 40 years and I am very disappointed. I definitely do not want or need an apology from Harrahs I’m sure nothing will come of my disappointing review but, I am hoping that Harrahs will do better. Instead of me paying to stay, Harrahs should have paid me to stay! Pros: Sopori’s restaurant was excellent, and our server Veda was outstanding. In the Diamond club, Linda went out of her way to assist in the room change. Additionally, our bellman who’s been here for 23 years but unfortunately I did not catch his name was wonderful. Mattresses in both rooms seemed newer. Read less
