The Garland

Hollywood, Los Angeles

The hotel

Set in seven, leafy North Hollywood acres, The Garland is a relaxing, family friendly boutique hotel that doesn’t skimp on style while placing you and your tribe within a free shuttle ride of Universal Studios and a wealth of other essential LA attractions and experiences. The vibe here is funky retro, from the indecently comfortable leather armchairs by the lobby fireplace to room and suites (including family suites) that feature back-in-the-day geometric prints and funky furniture. Farm-fresh dining is the order of the day here, and we love The Garland’s weekly programme of muck-in activities that includes guided urban walks, Dive-In movies by the pool and courtyard games.

I really liked the pool in the hotel. At night, they show a movie we can watch while floating in the pool. They have a fire place by the pool too. It was close to Universal Studio with a free shuttle to go there and back. I liked the decoration of the hotel: it had a style. A quirky unusual hotel in LA. It says north Hollywood but I would say Studio City so not very handy for downtown Hollywood. We didn’t have a car which isn’t ideal for this hotel. Plenty of parking if you do. Very close to universal studios with an hourly free quirky bus. Hotel is not the Norm for LA but everyone there seemed to love it ! Pool is… Read more

The pool is nice, although a little small and not masses of sunbeds available. We had a room with two double beds which were very comfortable. Nice bathroom. My main criticism of the room was that it didn't have what I would call proper air conditioning. There was a chiller unit on the far side of the room which was very close to the second bed in the room (about a foot away), which meant every time it kicked in it was quite loud and gave the person sleeping next to it a full whack of cold air. We had the take out breakfast a couple of times, which although not great value was very nice. The trolley service to Universal Studios was excellent. Ran exactly to time. The only downside was that it didn't run for several hours after lunch, so if you go to the Studios for rope drop you are stuck until late afternoon. Read less

The hotel itself is pleasant and the staff is friendly and helpful, but they really need to improve the food and presentation you get with room service. My breakfast was a plop of yogurt with some berries and served in a cardboard box. Surely they can do better than this? My breakfast was a plop of yogurt with some berries and served in a cardboard box. Surely they can do better than this? We also ate dinner on the patio one night since the restaurant was so packed and that food was not appealing either. The tortilla chips were old, and my husband’s burger came with no lettuce or tomato and no condiments, and my kale salad was very plain. It really wouldn’t take that much to make the food more appealing. Read less

We had a good feeling booking based on photos, but we were very pleasantly surprised still as to how much the hotel felt like you were somewhere away from the city, yet outside the walls, you were on your way to the freeway and easily accessible to Ventura Blvd, etc. The pool was better than I had expected as well and the service was great. An attendant even came around almost once an hour to give free items to people lounging around the pool - Otter pops, a taste of one of the drinks from the menu and aloe for your skin! The grounds are simple yet decorated with character and a very relaxing atmosphere overall. It was a great experience overall and we would definitely recommend and stay the next time we are in need of a hotel in that area. Read less
