Shutters on the Beach

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Amenities include the gorgeous ONE Spa offering a wide range of signature treatments, including the RED FLOWER HAMMAM detoxifying treatment. There’s also a swimming pool to laze by and a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. One Pico is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, showcasing a seasonally changing menu of modern American cuisine. If a more laid-back atmosphere appeals, however, beach-side cafe Coast more than fits the bill and is open from morning until night. For afternoon tea and evening cocktails, look no further than the lobby lounge, a cosy, intimate space that is popular with locals and guests alike.

We arrived from a long drive from Northern California to Santa Monica. We were greeted with mask , person at the car service was super friendly and quickly escorted us to the lobby which sparkled clean. The check in was very smooth and five minutes later we were our beautiful room. The best part of the service is their direct connection with you, which is immediate upon checking. This provides touchless service where we requested via text room reservations, directions, ideas for restaurant, luggage and any other items. These request were immediately responded. The two restaurants overlooking the beach offered us great menu and the food was great. The room service was top notch and our eight year old could not stop from asking. We were able to conduct online school with our son using their FREE high speed internet. They accommodated by need to have a private room by giving us a very special rate which I really appreciated. THANK YOU CONCIERGE The service was great and the food was excellent. Will definitely return for other visits. OUR FAVORITE PLACE in Los Angeles Area Read less

My family of 4 (me, wife, 2 boys 3 and 1.5) came for labor day weekend. First I want to start with the good things about our stay. The service here was excellent. The staff was very courteous, pleasant, and very helpful. Everyone from the front desk staff to the bellman to the pool staff and cleaning crew were on point. We asked for a microwave and mini fridge and these were brought right away and set up right away. That was great. I felt like an important guest while staying here. We appreciated this level of attention. Our room was very nice and clean as well. We booked one of the suites to stay in and we were very impressed by how nice and clean it was. It had 3 balconies! The cleaning ladies come by multiple times a day and make sure it's spotless. We really appreciated that. The pool water here felt amazing for some reason. It was a salt pool and it felt like the perfect temperature and it was so soft on your skin. We loved it. The pool staff was also very accommodating. Wish the pool area was a larger area but it was still very good. Now for the "could use some work" issues. When you are paying $1200 a night, you expect a certain level of perfection that just didn't seem to come through in certain areas. First, our room was on the 4th floor and it's like a maze to get to. In order to get there you have to take 2 different elevators (or an elevator and a stair case) and either wind around the whole property or cut through the pool area. This was very inconvenient as it takes 5-10 mins just to get out of the building! Additionally, our room was extremely noisy. This hotel actually bridges a street below it and all night there were people on the street yelling or cars screeching or revving. Not ideal when you have 2 little ones trying to sleep in an unfamiliar environment. In the room, our tub shower handle didn't work so it was useless and the phones despite being land lines were useless as well because you could barely hear the person on the other end due to static and low volume. The saving grace was their texting option that allows you to communicate directly with the front desk. This was a lifesaver. But for $1200 a night, I expect everything to work. Once you're at the beach, if you want an umbrella and chairs, it'll cost you $70. I felt like this should be included with your stay. They didn't have enough towels when we got there. Seriously? I just paid $70 and no towels? They ended up bringing some an hour later. We ate at the Coast restaurant for breakfast and for the prices they charge I expected the food to be amazing. It was decent but it wasn't amazing. Our food was already cold when I got it but I was too hungry to complain. Even though the hotel is on the beach, to get to the water is about 1000 feet away (I measured it on Google maps). That's a long way to walk in the sand and it's just annoying especially after it took you 10 mins just to get out of the hotel. I would consider coming back here again for the right price but I didn't feel like I got good enough value. It is trying to be a high end hotel as it has the prices of one but falls a tad short of expectations in a few areas. Thanks for reading. Read less

I would advise staying away from this place. While sitting on the beach in a covid filled Los Angeles, one of the contractors hired by Shutters on the Beach informed me that if I don’t like the less than 6 feet distance he was putting people around me, that I should then go and kill myself - there would be plenty of distance that way. EXCUSE ME? In a time of extreme mental fragility and a history of suicide in my family, killing oneself is by far WAYYYY over any type of line. And then he proceeds to verbally assault me with lines like: “Are you mentally stable?” “I’ll get the lifeguard to kick you off the beach forever” and “wtf is wrong with you bi*ch.” In telling hotel management about this occurrence, they said they’re was nothing they can do. So I’ll do something and post this review on every travel site to warn people about behavior this establishment condones. Read less

We just completed a 5 night stay at Shutters and had a wonderful experience. Despite the fact that we are in a pandemic and spa services as well as indoor dining were not available, Shutters did everything to make us feel well taken care of. The attention to detail and the service were excellent - even above and beyond expectations. Beatrice, the assistant manager, made certain that our needs were met and that our accommodations were exactly what we wanted. The room was immaculate, beautiful and large. It was stocked with excellent soaps, etc. The linens were "delicious" and the housekeeping service was excellent. The Coast restaurant was very good and we found ourselves hosting family for breakfast, lunch and dinners. Whatever we ordered was excellent - from salads to fish of the day. They also had two outdoor areas for serving so, depending on the weather and time of day, we could choose our location. The pool area was beautiful and the attendants, while being gracious and respectful, adhered to social distancing and informed us of mask requirements. Pico 1, the more formal restaurant on premises opened outdoors during our stay. Shutters also had a reciprocal dining arrangement with Casa del Mar [a beautiful hotel next door] which we could charge to our room at Shutters. The beach was gorgeous and literally right outside our door.. The lobby and upstairs bar area we're accessible and elegant. My husband and I were delighted with Shutters and look forward to our next visit. Read less

The property is beautiful on the beach however has major service issues. 1- we paid for a room with an ocean front with a balcony. We got ocean front without a balcony. If we hadn’t called they would have just charged the same price without any warning until he checkin although they knew already we were getting the room that we had not paid for. If I didn’t call to complain it would be like as if they hadn’t overpromised and sold a product that was misrepresented. This is dishonest and a rip off. 2- I found the service poor and waiters rude and aggressive. If Ritz Carlton is a 5 star hotel Shutters is at best a 2.5- 3 star service. 3- advantages are : the property is on the beach so easy access to the beach. And nice to sit on the boardwalk for breakfast 4- sleeping is impossible at the ocean from rooms as you will be waken up with loud people passing by and playing high volume music till 2-3 am and starts again at 7 am. 5- beach is overcrowded and not the best place for covid times. Sail at your own risk. Read less
