The hotel

A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Amenities include the gorgeous ONE Spa offering a wide range of signature treatments, including the Signature Facial with Augustinus Bader. There’s also a swimming pool to laze by and a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. One Pico is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, showcasing a seasonally changing menu of modern American cuisine. If a more laid-back atmosphere appeals, however, beach-side cafe Coast more than fits the bill and is open from morning until night. For afternoon tea and evening cocktails, look no further than the lobby lounge, a cosy, intimate space that is popular with locals and guests alike.

I share this to hopefully save another couple/family from disappointment. My husband and I booked Shutters in February for our honeymoon stay in July. We were so looking forward to the experience, believing (based on the price!) that it would be exceptional. The reality was in total opposition. Our room wasn't ready until well after the official check-in time, and the worst part was being told - by multiple people - different reasons for the lack of preparation. It was so clear we were being jerked around, and all we could do was stand around in the lobby (after a long day of travel) and wait for the hotel to deliver on our agreement. When we finally did get in a room, the WiFi wasn't working, when we were promised "advanced Hi-Speed Internet" for the $40 per day resort fee (on top of the exorbitant cost of a room that was shockingly small despite being billed as a "suite"). Oh, and the "partial ocean view" that was advertised? Sure, if you craned your neck out the window and looked past the parking lot and over another building, you could vaguely see the ocean. But it was awful. The room was bad, the Wi-Fi didn't work for half the trip (which is a bigger deal when you're coming from another country) and no matter how often we made inquiries on how to fix the problems we had (why was there no soap? why were our towels not replenished? why was housekeeping knocking on the door at 8:14 a.m. when we had the Do Not Disturb sign on?) we got no real answers. In the end, Shutters diminished our honeymoon experience by not delivering on the most basic things that you would expect from any hotel, let alone one that charges what they do and bills itself as "luxury." I would highly recommend searching out other options in Santa Monica; there are far better hotels and experiences to be had. Read less

Beachfront location and a very stylish hotel. Good size rooms with nice amenities. Great atmosphere in the lounge with live music most evenings. Wonderful staff at this hotel. Everyone from reception throughout. Devon who helped us on the beach is a real asset to the hotel.

We had a great stay, the hotel has a warm atmosphere and makes you feel really valued. For breakfast and lunch, make sure you get served by James, he is amazing. Really professional and the kids loved how he could remember what they liked on the menu. We will be back!

I was very shocked at how my experience was this past weekend at this once beautiful resort. I travel quite a bit for work and pleasure and wanted a lovely memorable staycation for my fiancé and I for his big 40th birthday and was very disappointed. Our room had no coffee machine and our tv was broken and attempted to be fixed three times until we gave up due to the late hour. On top of it all our shower had no hot water only Luke warm. The positive was the food was great as always as I try to look at the silver lining. But was very very taken aback at how I had expected my experience to be much different and we’ve stayed there quite a few times over the years as we only live in Orange County and Boyce back and forth from there to Casa Del Mar but I’m not sure if it was the holiday weekend but I just expected more of what I had hoped to me a memorable weekend Read less

Wonderful hotel with a friendly and gracious staff. Wonderful food and a dreamy location Super comfortable bed and lots of space to gather with friends in the pretty lobby. Was slightly chilly when we were visiting so the fireplace was delightful.
