Meritage Resort and Spa

Napa, Napa Valley Wine Region

The hotel

You know you’ve reached wine country when you arrive at Meritage Resort & Spa. On the threshold of Napa Valley, its design may be Tuscan-inspired, but its soul is pure Napa, with views of a grapevine-covered slope as you swim, hiking (or strolling) trails through nine acres of vineyards, an underground tasting room, and wine served at every turn. But it’s also a place that recognises exceptional wine should be paired with life’s other luxuries: separate adult and family pools, al fresco fireplaces and whirlpools, lazy Sunday brunches, and wining and dining venues like award-winning Siena, the Crush bowling lounge, a café-come-gelateria, and a luxury wine bar. But it’s the Estate Cave that promises the most indulgence; 40 ft underground, it hosts a wine tasting room and Spa Terra’s steam grottos and soaking pools.

Usually I try to see the glass half full...unfortunately on arrival the reception and initial impressions are such that it makes the glass hard to see anything else but empty. We actually considered checking out and returning home after the initial impression. Let’s start with a single positive. The young lady with glasses and blond hair was a “greeter” of sorts tasked with engaging the guests as they wait in line to register. She was pleasant, professional and engaging. The registrar on the other hand was disinterested, expressionless and devoid of doing her job with any sense of pride. As our reservation has indicated, we had two dogs at $50.00 a piece that were to receive “pet amenities” include a dog bed, bowl to take home, organic wine bottle shaped cookies and other treat”. At this point this is listed as a point of annoyance. Upon arrival to the room, no pet items were present, and as we planned to leave for dinner we attempted to call down to the front desk. The icons on the phone were non functioning. I opted to use the outside line to call the hotel directly to which there was no answer. I tried again and after 20 rings there was an answer. The woman of course was unable to register the source of the call as I was calling from outside. I indicated I wanted to update that 1) we’d be leaving for dinner and would be crating the dogs as was the policy if housekeeping was to deliver the pet amenities 2)our phone was not functioning properly 3) I had to call twice 4) I was disappointed in our room paying 900.00 for a 2 night stay with views of storage and garbage containment areas. She indicated she would notify the manager of our concerns. After waiting for 45 minutes we decided to take the dogs and update the front desk of our change. Same registrar, same indifference with a roll of the eyes added to irritate me more. All the time I’m thinking we have massages planned for tomorrow and another nights stay and it’s too late to cancel! I’m sitting in the parking lot after a nice casual dinner at Gott’s Roadside. Hopefully upon reentering our standard, far from 4 star accommodations, there will be a dog beds and bowls waiting. Because the disinterested registrar also informed me they had run out of all dog treats! Next time we will be returning to the Meadowood or if we’re bringing the dogs we’ll be at Embassy Suites. I’ll update if there is any response from management. Read less

This is our second hotel we have stayed at I this chain (Estancia La Jolla is the other). I can’t say enough about the dog friendly part of our experience. like Estancia, your dog is truly a welcomed guest too. Grounds are super clean and groomed. Nice bars and event center. Wish they had more upscale restaurants on the property like Estancia but… Read more

Wish they had more upscale restaurants on the property like Estancia but it is a nice to have. There are so many restaurants in Napa to begin with. You can skip the wine in the room.do try mi sueno winery tasting on the premise. It has an interesting history. Be sure to take the vineyard walk. Read less

I stay in at least 50 hotel rooms a year for business as well as leisure travel every other month. I can honestly say this was the worst hotel room ever. The furnishings are nice and well kept, however the only window overlooks the restaurant. Literally there are two 10 tops 5 feet from my bedroom window. I cannot open my drapes because everyone in the restaurant has a great view of me in my room. There is no natural sunlight or gardens to look upon. I can hear the restaurant guests conversations as if I’m sitting next to them in the restaurant, which I’m practically am. I talked to the front desk about it immediately after checking in and they said there wasn’t anything else available, though they did offer a $50 credit to use on site. This is not a room they should offer to guest, it is ridiculous and reflects very poorly on the hotel. Read less

We were quite pleased with our recent stay at Meritage. The grounds and pool area met expectations. Saturday was quite busy, Sunday afternoon mellowed out, Monday and Tuesday were quiet. I read the comments about bird poop. Yes, there is some, but to me, that is just nature. There is a card in the room explaining the swallow nests, and the crew is doing a lot of power washing now. A few small things like used room service trays in the hall for a really long time, or the check in person did not explain a lot to us, including the fact I had a $100 resort credit, but to me, these are little items in the grand scheme. I would stay there again. Read less
