Meritage Resort and Spa

Napa, Napa Valley Wine Region

The hotel

You know you’ve reached wine country when you arrive at Meritage Resort & Spa. On the threshold of Napa Valley, its design may be Tuscan-inspired, but its soul is pure Napa, with views of a grapevine-covered slope as you swim, hiking (or strolling) trails through nine acres of vineyards, an underground tasting room, and wine served at every turn. But it’s also a place that recognises exceptional wine should be paired with life’s other luxuries: separate adult and family pools, al fresco fireplaces and whirlpools, lazy Sunday brunches, and wining and dining venues like award-winning Siena, the Crush bowling lounge, a café-come-gelateria, and a luxury wine bar. But it’s the Estate Cave that promises the most indulgence; 40 ft underground, it hosts a wine tasting room and Spa Terra’s steam grottos and soaking pools.

I emailed the Director of Guest Service Experience before the posting of this review and waited 72 hours to allow him time to respond in the event he had his regular days off but I still have not received a reply. I had a subpar experience the staff at the Meritage during my limited interaction with them. In my many trips to Napa I have never been made to felt as though I didn't belong at a property as this last stay made me feel. My check-in experience was by far the worst I have had not just visiting Napa but in all of my stays at premium or luxury properties worldwide, and I truthfully left feeling as though I was a second-class citizen. Upon my arrival I was not greeted by either of the two valets on staff as they both attended to the couple that arrive right before me. I would have hoped for at least a greeting or some acknowledgement of my arrival, but upon asking if I was okay to stay parked in the check-in area momentarily while I checked in for my room, I did not receive a response until I physically sought out the valet/bellhop. I entered the lobby and found that there were 3 agents working behind the desk with no other additional guests other than the aforementioned couple. All 3 agents went to assist that couple and did not even acknowledge my presence as I waited to check in even though all 3 made direct eye contact with me; a simple "we'll be right with you" would have sufficed. I had to wait for another member of the staff to come out from the back room to assist me after several minutes of waiting who, after starting my check in, had given a very obvious dirty look to the other 3 agents at which point one of them offered me a glass of champagne. (I should note this staff member was a person of color while the other three were not and that the couple before me were a middle-aged Caucasian pair). After receiving my keys, I returned to the front to unload my own bags with no assistance offered from the valets/bellhops as they had done with the couple before me and did not receive an offer to valet my car after I had initially asked them for that service after I finished unloading myself. I had to again approach the valet for him to park my car and only after he had made the comment "are you sure you don't want to self-park?" while discreetly motioning to the $30/overnight fee sign; it is also worth noting that my vehicle (a newer model Lexus no less) was the only one still located out in front of the lobby area at the time of my asking and no other guests from the wedding I was attending had been asked that question. I took my luggage to my room, which I expected to be clean, but arrived to find several pieces of garbage under the table in front of the sofa and smudges of fingerprints on the shower door and the bathroom mirror which I cleaned off myself. Additionally, the service flap for the bathtub would not stay securely shut, so after about an hour of listening to it clang against the wall while I was trying to relax in the tub I eventually had to move the ironing board leg in front of it to ensure that it stayed shut. The freezer section of the refrigerator also failed to maintain a low enough temperature and as a result ruined the ice cream I had previously purchased and had intended to store. I also called the concierge as soon as I reached my room (just after 6pm I believe) to see if they would have recommendations for a suit rental place or a suit store where I could purchase one on short notice, as I had forgotten mine at home, but was directed to voicemail each of my 4 calls. I am not sure if this is because there was no concierge on duty at that time but I am disappointed that a hotel that prides itself on a luxury experience does not have a concierge available during peak check-in hours to provide recommendations for guests that had recently arrived. In addition to my experience with the staff, the looks I received from other guests at the property for merely walking through the lobby were enough to feel as though I was not welcome on property. I don't know if it's because I'm young, or because I'm a person of color, or if it's assumed that I do not have money (as I interpreted from the valet's snide remark) but I do know that I ensured that I was of good hygiene and respectable attire (clean button up shirts, ironed khaki shorts, and Sperrys or clean athletic shoes). I spent the majority of my trip using a rear access door to a staircase near the dumpster to enter and exit the property to avoid any additional interaction with the staff or other guests and self-parked the remainder of my trip to avoid additional interaction with the valets. I would also like to mention that the lack of access control, such as a room key reader, on the stairwells that lead directly to guest rooms and the lack of authentication/security on the WiFi network is very troubling. I was also appalled to learn that another friend of mine (and a fellow attendee of a wedding whose bride and groom were both staying at the property) had an experience similar to mine in regards to being treated as though they were less important than your other guests. I am overall disappointed at the quality of my stay and am livid at the way I was treated. Read less

This hotel is worse than your typical 4 star and the service is on par with a 1 star hotel. If you want to get lied to in your face, dare to book here. We came here for a wedding and booked our room under the wedding block. There were two other events happening around the same time. In the AM, when we attempted to use the pool, we were told to "go away" because we were not part of the "Raffles" group during the weekend of 9/25 and that the pool was exclusively to be used by that group. After we called the front desk, requesting to speak with management TWICE, they LIED in our face and said management was in meetings all day on a Sunday 9/26. Of course their management never followed up or called. They shamelessly charge $35 for resort fee, when they don't allow you to use the pool. The overall hotel experience was terrible because of the disrespect from the incompetent management team. Stay away. You can get better bang for the buck elsewhere. Read less

After reading some “not great” reviews about The Meritage Hotel & Spa, I was a bit skeptical about choosing this property and even thought to switch to another resort. SO very HAPPY we decided not to move. Everything was terrific. The resort is lovely and the grounds are beautiful. Yes, the vineyards have been replanted and the vines are not fully grown yet, but everything that is great does start out small. It was impressive to see just how much time, effort and hard work goes into producing a nice bottle of wine. The Staff is wonderful, attentive, and always ensured we had everything we needed. They were great to chat with here and there. The food on property is delicious. And the Spa, WOW! Had multiple treatments and each one left us very relaxed and ready for a day to chill at one of their pools. The Meritage pool is a little chilly, but within just a few steps away is the Vista Collina pool which is warmer with full direct sunlight. Vista Collina is the Meritage sister property. Meritage guests have access to this property and pool. Speaking of the Vista Collina, this brings me to the main reason I encourage you to visit these resorts, Gina D., Concierge. Gina is amazing. Months prior to our stay Gina coordinated our guided wine tours, off-site dinners, on-site wine tastings and helped with various other items to make our trip a truly wonderful experience. During pre-stay planning, Gina and I interacted numerous times. Gina was always very helpful, happy, and cheerful. Gins has the best sense of humor. She is top notch and I started missing her even as we said our goodbyes on our last day. Upon departing the resort, Gina advised us to leave her with the cases of wine we purchased during our stay in CA and she would coordinate having them shipped to our home in NJ, which she did, and everything went smoothly. I cannot say enough great things about this resort. Definitely go if you have the chance and stop by Gina’s office at the Vista Collina to give her a hug from her friend Patti in NJ. Read less
