Meritage Resort and Spa

Napa, Napa Valley Wine Region

The hotel

You know you’ve reached wine country when you arrive at Meritage Resort & Spa. On the threshold of Napa Valley, its design may be Tuscan-inspired, but its soul is pure Napa, with views of a grapevine-covered slope as you swim, hiking (or strolling) trails through nine acres of vineyards, an underground tasting room, and wine served at every turn. But it’s also a place that recognises exceptional wine should be paired with life’s other luxuries: separate adult and family pools, al fresco fireplaces and whirlpools, lazy Sunday brunches, and wining and dining venues like award-winning Siena, the Crush bowling lounge, a café-come-gelateria, and a luxury wine bar. But it’s the Estate Cave that promises the most indulgence; 40 ft underground, it hosts a wine tasting room and Spa Terra’s steam grottos and soaking pools.

Really poor experience starting with the farcical check in process where you can check in at 4PM but no one can tell you when your room will be actually available to use ( actually 2 hours from check in to getting into the room) then to find dusty on glass shelves in the bathroom so much for thorough cleansing and Covid controls.

My wife and I stayed for 4 nights over the 4th July weekend. We’re generally not harsh critics, but there were a few unforgivable issues with this hotel; (1) we didn’t have a duvet in our room , asked for one on the first night and were told there were none available as they were all being cleaned. We were told to make do with a sheet for the 1st night, and that a duvet would be available the next night. We didn’t get a duvet for the entire four nights. Totally unacceptable for a hotel claiming to be 4 star. (2) the hotel advertised coffee machines in all rooms. Upon arrival there were no coffee machines. Again, we called concierge and asked if we could have a coffee machine. They said no, but said there was a bar that served coffee , which was open until 11pm. Each night when we arrived back to the hotel between 7-8pm, the bar was already closed for the night, with no explanation. When we enquirer, management suggested we visit a Starbucks, the nearest of which was a few miles away. (3) no loungers ever available by the pool. (4) no service around the pool - you have to walk to another bar to get drinks. (5) no room service. There was a room service menu, but when we called down to order, they said because of the time (6pm) we had to walk down to the restaurant t collect the order. Overall the property was reasonable, but DO NOT book this hotel if you want any kind of service. Easily the worst place I’ve ever stayed, and stayed in many hostels and 1 star hotels. Wish I had something nice to say about this place, but it’s honestly terrible. Just hope people listen to this review before booking. Read less

The hotel was clean and the property was nice. It is nice there are two pools for adults and children. It seemed that the staff was new or untrained. When you call down to the front desk, no one ever answers. We did not get soap in our room and we called several times. When you call down to the front desk, no one ever answers. We did not get soap in our room and we called several times. After requesting soap at the front desk (that was the means of contacting all hotel services) it still never arrived. The shower did not work properly and there was never hot water. The staff does not also enforce mask wearing consistently in the lobby. Read less

This past weekend, my husband and I were supposed to stay at the Meritage resort to celebrate two milestones: our wedding anniversary and purchasing our first home. Sadly, we never got to experience what was supposedly a beautiful resort, that came highly recommended from friends who recently got married at the Meritage. We originally booked our stay for July, but had to change our dates to June due to an earlier than anticipated escrow close date. Our reservation change was made via phone and we were really excited to celebrate in Napa, as we had been quarantining with family in Southern California since March. We flew back up to Northern California just for this celebration, and we called the Meritage upon arrival in hopes of checking in early. As it turns out, the changes to our reservation were never actually made by the staff. My husband was bounced from one unapologetic staff member to another over the course of an hour, only to be told that if we still wanted to stay at the Meritage, we would have to pay double the rate that we had originally booked. The phone call ended with us being told we would receive a call from the manager, who we had hoped would provide a viable solution. My husband and I were completely shocked by the staff’s lack of empathy. The phone call that we eventually received from a manager a few hours later, was also unapologetic and made it seem as though our business didn’t even matter to the Meritage, now or in the future. Needless to say, we scrambled to book a room at another hotel in Napa. The Archer hotel was happy to accommodate our last minute booking at a reasonable rate. Their staff went above and beyond to make up for what the Meritage team could not provide before we even stepped foot in Napa. Given that we are back living in Northern California full time, we plan to frequent Napa quite often for the weekend instead of just doing day trips. We are aware that COVID-19 has caused horrible damage to the wine & restaurant industries and we have been doing our best to support local businesses. We are disappointed that the Meritage will not be part of our future plans to contribute to Napa’s economy and hope that other guests never have to experience what we did. Read less

The check in process was fairly quick and the room was a good size but there was a little bit of wear on the furniture. All in all, it was quite comfortable though and there was a small refrigerator that I used in the room. The fitness room was a decent size with aerobic equipment and weights. Two of the days I used the gym, I was the only one there. On the third day, someone came in just as I was finishing up. I used the pool across the street at their other property, Vista Collina, because I could swim laps there. That pool is 25 yards and I got there each day when the pool opened at 7am, and was the only one there, so it was easy to do laps. I would stay at the Meritage again. Read less
