The Plaza Midtown Central Park

Midtown, New York

The hotel

Feel like you’ve been here before? You have, in the movies anyway. From Home Alone 2 and Bride Wars, to Sleepless in Seattle, the location has proved a blockbuster backdrop for some firm film favourites. The Plaza certainly lives up to its name, and being a National Historic Landmark it’s full of old-world elegance and grandeur. Just south of Central Park, there’s plenty of places to eat and drink right on your doorstep, but some of the hotel’s own restaurants are not to be missed. And not forgetting the aptly named Champange Bar, where you can sip on some bubbles whilst looking out on Fifth Avenue and The Pulitzer Fountain.

Excellent location, lots of history, but sadly does not live up to its 5 star rating. Breakfast is diner style, tasteless food, problems with hot water, with elevators, however, everytime you go down to breakfast they will ask for your vaccination card as if you have not been there every day of the week. Spa services are good, but spa is far from… Read more

The staff felt like family after a few days and by the time we left I think I knew all their names because of their pleasantness and dependability. Great staff all the way from those in housekeeping to meeting the interim GM of the hotel, all great people. It was our youngest sons birthday and the staff helped make it such a special celebration. The rooms were beautiful and very spacious- we had 1 regular hotel room connecting to a suite which had a pull out sofa for one of my kids use. If you want the true NYC iconic experience definitely stay here. Read less

I made a reservation for a stay at the plaza months in advance for my mothers 60th birthday. It was always a dream of hers to stay at the plaza. I did become a bit concerned the day before we were supposed to go as in the past month there seem to be a barrage of negative reviews complaining about this and that... Luckily and happily to say, at least for us in our case, all those complaints seem to be unfounded. We were greeted in a very friendly manner upon entering and the lobby is gorgeous, still decorated for Christmas and felt very magical. When we went into our room it was beautiful. Plenty spacious, beautiful decor and clean comfortable beds, with a large spacious shower and bathtub with dual sinks and numerous toiletries including lovely linen robes and slippers...and, free of charge, a small cake and bottle of champagne to commemorate my mother's birthday! I did inform them beforehand but wasn't expecting such a nice and generous setup. It was clear they appreciated our time and how long I had the reservation for. Afternoon tea was delightful. The service was fast and friendly. Our server was happy to make recommendations and walk us through the menu. They also fully accommodated my sister's allergies and diet. In fact, during our stay the staff were happy to answer any questions for us and accommodate us in any way they could. Everything was absolutely delicious, and so surprisingly filling! For such small bites we were all stuffed by the end. I don't understand people complaining about the destination tax, as it is plastered all over the booking portion of their website and they tell you about it at the front desk when you check in. It's not my favorite thing, but to my understanding that was determined by the state of ny, and at least they compensate by giving daily credits toward different things in the hotel (yay, free coffee :)!). I also can't relate to the complaints of thinking other guests were treated better based on income level. We stayed in a guest room, definitely on the cheaper side of the prices available, and we still experienced friendly and speedy service. If I had to complain about one thing, even though online and in the hotel it says to dress fancy for afternoon tea there were people let in who were wearing sweatshirts, but I understand why in these times a business would be lax on dress code if it meant attracting more paying customers. But all in all my mother had an amazing time which is the most important aspect of all, and so did all of the rest of us. I want to thank the plaza for making her day amazing :). We definitely would all like to come back one day! Read less
