I'll preface this review by saying it won't apply to everyone. My wife and I have stayed at this resort 5 times between January 2011 and February 2020. Each time we have paid for the stay using points. The first three stays (2011, 2012, 2014) were excellent. Our room was upgraded to oceanfront, reservations for each night were made in advance, we were invited to a repeat guest/VIP dinner with the general manager and given spa credits. The last two stays (2018, 2020), things have changed. In 2018, we received the oceanfront room upgrade, and reservations, but they had done away with the repeat guest/VIP dinner and spa credit. For our February 2020 stay, our room was "upgraded" but only by one level and we were only provided with two reservations out of the 4 nights we were staying. I'm bringing this history to light as an indictment of management - if there isn't recognition for IHG top status holders and repeat guests, why should we come back? It seems to me that there is less importance placed on the gold wristband than ever before. I met a gentleman in the elevator one day and we sparked up a conversation about this. This was his 3rd time to the hotel and didn't receive a room upgrade. The worst part about it all is that his wife works in management for IHG! The workers certainly aren't creating this policy and I don't want it to be mistaken that this review is somehow because of lousy service. Regardless of my frustration with management, this most recent stay was all around OK. By now, we know what to expect with this resort. Don't expect luxury and you won't be let down. Check-in: Our arrival was frustrating. We had gotten there during a lull in the waves of check-ins, but still had to wait 20 minutes in the VIP check-in area. We were rushed through that process when we finally did get checked in and didn't receive the usual welcome drink. Our room(s): We were given a "Junior Suite" in building 1. The room was fairly big, the bathroom was dark and small, and the AC unit was barely keeping the room cool. We made do with the room for 2 nights before we complained about how hot it was. Maintenance came and checked out the unit, determined it wasn't working properly and then replaced it about 30 minutes later. About 10 minutes into having the new AC unit, our room was filled with smoke! I went right to the front desk while the room aired out and after a while was given a new room, in building 7. This was certainly an upgrade over what we had - a very nice room by comparison. The Food: - The buffet was OK as always. Usually can find something to eat there. The breakfast selection was definitely the best. - Jerk Hut was our favorite. The guys that work there are the best. Christopher Robinson, Kevin and the others (didn't catch everyone's name) always have a smile and are very personable. - The Terrace & Sorrento were very good, service was excellent. - We elected to do Jerk After Dark. I wasn't overly impressed by the quality of the food, but the service was fantastic. Clevon, Nick, Anna-Gaye, Nakaya, Joven & Nashay made our night very enjoyable. The experience was definitely worth it. The Spa: My wife an I opted for a 45 minute couples massage given by Roxan and Abigail. They were great! I would recommend spa services to anyone staying at the resort. The Beach & Pools: - By now we know the game with beach and pool chairs. To much chagrin of first time guests, if you want a good chair, you need to reserve it early. The pools were clean and temperate, the beaches were probably the cleanest I have ever seen them. I attribute this to the dedicated smoking areas (no more cigarette buts on the beach) and the move to limit the use of paper straws and eliminating plastic straws Service Overall: There are definitely people that work at the hotel that do a great job, but as I mentioned earlier, the level of service/recognition overall has declined over the years. One employee even refused to speak to my wife! She only would nod her head yes or no...how rude is that? We have enjoyed this resort over the years, but this will likely be our last stay. If you're looking for a family and budget friendly resort, this is the place for you - just don't expect 5* service or accommodations. Read less

The music from the pool was quite loud at times, but we were never in our room during the day so it didn't really matter. the staff was lovely, except for the info desk as it took 30 mins to get a receipt for our massages, and then they charged us an extra $30 because we thought it was 20% off because we had a voucher. The AC was quite loud on high, but if you keep it on while you are gone, your room is cool when you return. That was a bit of a disappointment. Beware that this is a NON smoking resort. There are a few places you can go, but no smoking (cigarettes) on your balcony, or in the common areas. We rolled with it. The people of Jamaica are lovely and the food was great. We will be back. Its great value for your money. Read less

February 9 though 21. The people working here are for the most part very nice. “Jack Sparrow” one of the sailboat operators is great. Lots of fun sailing the Hobie Cats. The only person we met who probably shouldn’t have a customer facing job was one of the guys who set up the sailing, snorkeling, and peddle boats. I don’t know his name but he doesn’t even look at you when you approach the window. He makes you feel like you’re an interruption in his day. They have 3 boats but only use one of them. There’s always a long wait to get a ride, and a ride is only about 15 minutes. They only operate a couple of hours a day at best. The guy who rakes the beaches in the morning let me borrow his shovel for the whole time I was there. I broke mine on the second day. Without a shovel I wouldn’t have had so much fun creating sand sculptures. The beaches are nice. Very small but adequate. There’s a reef that keeps the waves down to about 6” and a small island you walk to with the water no more than waist deep. Great place to bring kids. Only a few permanent “umbrellas” for shade. Go to the beach extra early if you want one. Not too early though. I left the towels on the chairs at 6:30 one morning. When I went back at 8:00 the guys who clean the beach removed them. To make it worse the hotel wants to charge you $20 each for “lost towels”. I was able to convince them not to do so this time. As an IHG Spire member I was upgraded to an ocean front room in the building I asked for. (Building 2). Average room size, but the bathroom is extremely small. The entire facility is tired. In desperate need of repair. Bathroom door doesn’t close. Hinges are rusty. The lever to flush the toilet actually broke off as I pushed it down. The entry door knob actually comes off as you pull the door open. It took 4 days for them to put a screw in it. When they did, it was too small. It fell out the first time I used it. Housekeeping has a habitat of leaving the door open when they finish cleaning the room. They have a shortage of bath mats too. The one day I forgot to leave a tip for housekeeping they decided not to make the little towel figures on the bed. Actually most days all they did was reuse the existing ones because I didn't take them apart. Swans almost every night for 12 nights. LOL. There is wood decking around the beach area. Definitely don’t want to walk barefoot there. Rotted wood and lots of splinters. They need more bartenders. There’s always a long like to get a drink. The bartenders act as though the cost of the alcohol comes out of their pay. (Yes, I tip them every time. It doesn’t matter.)They use measured pouring spouts. I don’t think in the two weeks we were there I saw them let it finish pouring once before they turned the bottle upright. I’m not a big drinker. Maybe two a day. All I wanted was for them to put two shots of banana liquor and a shot of rum in a glass. I take that to the ice cream stand to have them put soft serve in it. Now for the soft serve/nachos stand. They have chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. They are often out of at least two of them. Sometimes all three. The food is OK. The buffet has a limited menu that’s not bad. They need more help at the omelette station. In order to move the line quickly they cook the omelettes at very high temperatures. They can’t make an omelette that’s not dark brown on the bottom.(yes, I tip them too) In an effort start another omelette for the next guy in like they let yours burn. This happens almost every day. They post the menu each day about 4:30. Of course it’s too late to make a reservation at one of the specialty restaurants. You need to stand in line early on the day before you want the reservation. You would need to do this every day because you can only book for the following day. Really poor procedure especially when you have no idea what the buffet will be serving the following day. We did have a reservation one evening and decided to go to the buffet instead. Trying to be a nice guy, and make sure the reservation we had could be opened up for someone else, I went to the reservation desk to cancel it. They are so stuck on procedures that unless I went back to the room to get the reservation card they give you, and then bring it back to them, she couldn’t cancel it. She said it’s OK. Just don’t go. She didn’t seem to care that maybe someone else might like to go in our place. There are always people waiting for a cancellation in order to try one of the restaurants. The Teriyaki Restaurant isn’t bad. It’s the typical dinner and a show thing without the onion volcano. There is a $25 per person charge for this restaurant. Sorento’s is the Italian Restaurant. It’s OK too. Nothing special. The wait staff is very attentive. The house wines that are included at all the restaurants are not very good. Of course you can buy a bottle if you like. Sea Breeze is the seafood restaurant. It has the best location. It’s situated at the East end of the resort and is basically an open air restaurant. Get there early if you want a table by the edge of the deck overlooking the ocean. All the restaurants have very limited menus. This one has an optional menu for an up charge of $29 person. Five years ago it wasn’t bad. It was worth the extra charge. I’d say that’s no longer case. It’s a shame they don’t reinvest a little into the property. It’s a good location only about 15 minutes from the airport. They could have a really nice resort if they would only take care of it. Read less

We returned to the Holiday Inn Montego Bay for 2 weeks late January/early February, 2020. While I realize this resort is not what is typically considered a 5 star Resort,(and it definitely does NOT have the 5 star price attached to it), I have given it 5 stars for several reasons. The staff at every level go out of their way to ensure you are having a good time and are well taken care of. I want to send special kudos to several staff members, who were particularly welcoming to us. In the buffet, Kamar, Jaede, Joseph, Shamar, Sherika and Camille always went above and beyond. At breakfast ,the omelet station was excellent, the fresh fruit was so good and our coffee cups were always full. The soups served at lunch and in the evening were some of the best we have tasted. Good variety of foods at the buffet for evening meals. We ate at all the A La Carte Restaurants. Each was special in its own way. Loved Jerk after Dark, so peaceful to enjoy a leisurely supper on the beach while listening to the waves. My favourite restaurant was Sea Breeze. It was superb (starting with the appetizers and ending with the dessert). My friend Jennifer particularly enjoyed Jerk After Dark. The lobster was to die for. Shout out to the following servers in the different restaurants: Ava-Ann (Sorrento), Andreus (Sea Breeze), Joseph at the Jerk Hut and our fabulous, entertaining chef (Tommy) at Kenko, the Japanese Restaurant. As returning guests, we had the pleasure of attending the Returning Guest Dinner while there. It was great fun: mingled with other guests, enjoyed an excellent meal prepared by Chef Thomas and his staff, entertained while dining and after dinner the Entertainment Team distributed MANY prizes to MANY guests. Two other staff members I want to mention are Ronae (Lobby Bar)..a SWEETHEART) and Paul (Hotel Porter)..always helpful and going out of his way to make sure you're happy. We spent our days, relaxing on the beach for the most part. Ventured over to the island a couple of times and were in the main pool a few times. We all LOVE the beach. The property is kept VERY clean and our room was cleaned very well every day with supplies being restocked daily (Kudos to our Housekeeper..Building 5..third floor. ocean front). As IHG members, we had access to Building 7. We enjoyed pre-dinner cocktails in The Club Lounge a couple of times. Very pleasant little lounge. Would we return to the Holiday Inn Montego Bay? IN A HEARTBEAT!! Thank you everyone who had any part in making our stay so enjoyable and so much fun. I particularly enjoyed talking to Mr. Hendrickson. He is such a kind, sincere, knowledgeable and gentle man and I look forward to seeing him on our next vacation. Read less
