The hotel

Totally in keeping with its sophisticated home city, Canopy by Hilton Washington DC The Wharf sweeps you up in its uber-contemporary spirit. With its incredible location — best admired from the roof terrace — the urban-appropriate greenery, and a barely-there glass balcony create a serene setting for viewing Potomac River. It may only be a walk from the metro, water taxis, and The Wharf, but it has complimentary Canopy bikes for exploring. And you can return for local brew, wine, and spirit tastings at Canopy Central, which is also the venue for its complimentary artisanal breakfasts (if you don’t opt for the free Break Fast Bag in-room delivery, that is).

If you are looking for a beautiful, convenient and fun hotel as "home base" for a Washington DC vacation Look No Further! If you are looking for adult fun like cocktails, a great view, long walks on a pier, great restaurants and bars... Look No Further. If you are looking for convenience to transportation, terrific amenities and a fabulous caring staff...Look No Further! Thank you Canopy on the Wharf for a great vacation! OK... now the details. (I'm writing a lengthy review because I want to give travelers tips, pros & cons AND I want to praise the hotel for their team!) My husband and I arrived mid-week for a week's vacation to Washington DC to do ALL THE THINGS! We are empty nesters, active and love to explore / eat & drink. We had a few criteria when we were selecting a hotel: • Calm & Quiet: We wanted it to be a Hotel AWAY from all the school trips, craziness of downtown and have plenty to do at night. • Location: We wanted to be able to have access to all the attractions easily • Amenities: We wanted to be able to have a hearty breakfast or a light dinner meal onsite. • View: It's always a plus when there's a beautiful view from the hotel. • Staff: Since it was our first trip we were hoping for a friendly and helpful staff. All of these boxes were checked with the Canopy. We literally visited on one of the busiest weeks of the year... it was the height of the Cherry Blossom Festival, School Trips EVERYWHERE and Easter - which means an influx of families. There were people everywhere in the city and there was nothing nicer than starting the day with a quiet cup of coffee from our in-room Nespresso, catching the comfy shuttle bus that literally stopped in front of the hotel and easing into the day. When we left the craziness of downtown and came back to cocktails tastings at 6pm and plenty of friendly staff that were fun and kind. VIEW: The Canopy is across from the Jefferson Memorial, Pentagon, and the Airport so there is plenty to see out the window. You can see the Washington Monument from the pier and the Capital from the upper rooms facing the city. And of course you can see the marina and a very bustling boardwalk below, but we could hear NOTHING from our room, It was so quiet. In fact Bloomaroo (the Wharf's big Cherry Blossom Festival was happening the weekend we were there, how lucky were we?) and even with the crowds and bands our room was quiet. We were even able to watch fireworks from one of the balconies in the restaurant. Speaking of balconies, the Canopy has a wrap around balcony at their restaurant and a big deck/greenspace with water features and chairs/tables that is shared space with the Hyatt next door. It's lovely, above the boardwalk so there are views and a bit of a boundary between the two. Did I mention that there is also a rooftop bar? Talk about a view!!! STAFF / FOOD & DRINK: As far as the staff goes, everyone was competent and helpful, but I have to commend the food and bar staff. We generally are not ones to eat at the hotel, however we knew we had some big days ahead of us so few days we wanted a hearty breakfast, and some nights when we had a full day we just wanted a quiet meal... we were delighted by the staff on both ends of the day. I have to commend and give a shout out to the staff who were always not only friendly and treated us with kindness, but hard working. If it was busy they were working hard, and if it was quiet they were cleaning, washing windows and generally taking great care of the guests and the property. If you are a Diamond Member you get a resort credit of $18 a day for a single, $36 per couple which is sufficient to cover most of the cost of a hearty breakfast, or in the evening to have a salad (the salad with avocado and strawberries was generous and delicious, as was the Crispy Shrimp) or a Pizza. Most nights my husband and I would get a pizza, a salad and a couple of drinks and it was perfect. *I will make a note, the only night our food was not on par with other nights was the night of Bloomaro- but we have nothing but praise because the hotel restaurant which during our trip was fairly calm was SLAMMED and it was full of people overflowing from the festival. I don't know how they even kept up. It was crazy busy! The staff was busting their butts to keep things going and we couldn't help but admire their positive attitude throughout. They appear to work well as a team which is great to see. Complimentary cocktail tastings at 6 are a nice little way to wind down before going out to dinner or heading into the restaurant. The servers were friendly and fun and we enjoyed the whiskey sours the best! Since I am writing about Food/Beverage a few special shouts outs go to: Belyu - you are so sweet and a bright ray of sunshine! Thanks for the great picture! Dre - you Made our stay welcoming and fun - you are a great cocktail ambassador! Jewel - So calming and took great care of us - Thank you! Raymond - A man of so many differnt jobs and always working so hard! Dagmin- Consument professional, we enjoyed talking to you! Emma & Isaide - took wonderful care of us starting the day. (Oh yeah the Chicken and Biscuits will hold you all day!!!) If you don't have a resort credit, or you just want to eat of site there is a starbucks and a fancy cookie/pastry bakery on the bottom floor attached to the hotel. There are so many great restaurants on the wharf - ( two of our favorites were Hell's Kitchen and Milk & Honey). The night life on the Wharf has a fresh fun vibe with live entertainment, close to two live venues and so many restaurants of all types and price points. We arrived on a very rainy day, and the wharf is designed so you can get from the hotel to many restaurants in covered walkways which is helpful on inclement days. LOCATION: I already spoke of the conveniences on the Wharf, but it's location to the attractions is important to tourists. L'enfant Metro is about an 11 minute walk from the hotel, however we only had to do it once because the shuttle takes you directly there. If you don't need the metro but rather want to be dropped off at the mall the furthest stop on it's look is right in front of the Hirshorn Museum which is smack dab in the middle of the Mall. The city shuttle is the BEST KEPT SECRET and made our trip soooo easy. We took it once or twice each day to get to the metro or the mall. If we were going further... like Arlington Cemetery, we could grab an Uber easily there. Most of the time it was about $10-12 to get to any place on the mall or $18 to get to the Airport. We didn't uber much but it was great to have an easy location to grab one. The Shuttle bus was free and the Metro was $2 for each use. There are so many options to get where you need to go. PROS: Views / Location / Amenities / Wharf Vibe / Great Staff / Quiet / Modern Attractive Rooms / Comfortable Beds / Nespresso Machine / Refillable Water Bottles / Decent restaurant food and selection. CONS: You have to ask for Housekeeping, you don't get service unless you ask and we weren't told that at check in so one night we asked for some basic supplies and they were all out of towels, face cloths and ice bags. That was our only minor glitch. While this did not effect the quality of our stay, please note that Diamond Members do not get upgrades on check in like in most hotels. They accommodated us with our requests of room location but the room as booked is what you get. We enjoyed our room, no complaints but I know many Diamond Members expect upgrades. TIPS: -High rooms with partial marina views - away from the elevator are very quiet and have a nice view. -There is a Wharf Trail that goes past the boardwalk and would be lovely to walk or to take one the complimentary Bikes on. - we never got the chance. -Easy Access to the Potomac Water Taxi if you want to take in the views from the water or use for transportation. -BIG family sized swings and a bonfire pit are on the pier right in front of the hotel which is a nice feature at night and with kids -We did not travel with kids, and in general this was a mostly "adult" hotel the week were were there, however we did see kids at the hotel and on the pier and it seems to be a very safe place for kids with a lot of open space for exploring and running around. -There is a CVS very close to the hotel on the Wharf so you can grab snacks, any supplies you may have forgotten or need. When we come back we plan on making a return visit to this hotel as it was the perfect place for our very busy trip. Thanks Canopy! Read less

The lady at the front desk named Nia was very helpful. She helped us get our rooms when we had made some mistakes with the reservation. It was great customer service through and through. She was understanding and kind and helped us secure our room quickly and conveniently.

Zero. One of the worse experiences. As we arrived at the valet around 6 pm , it took 5 minutes for one person to come out. They told me the same thing. They will cancel my reservation and I will get my refund back. Don’t they understand this is not the point. This is the worse customer service hotel ever. Worse, as I walk down stair to my car. The valet asked me for $20 and they will help me with the parking. Who is managing this hotel. The valet? I hope someone get back to me. It’s 2 am. I am still pissed. Read less
