The Roxy Hotel

Soho and Tribeca, New York

The hotel

The Roxy Hotel Tribeca is located on the border of SoHo and TriBeCa, two of downtown’s most affluent residential neighbourhoods, where cobblestone streets and historic cast iron buildings give way to the most exclusive boutiques, restaurants, and galleries. The Hotel’s triangular shape gives the property its inimitability, most evident in its interior’s soaring eight-story atrium. The expansive Church Lounge with low-lying furniture is an ideal place to lounge, meet, or work by day and the perfect place for cocktails with friends at night

I was greeted by Melissa who was so warm and inviting from the start. She welcomed me to a cup of coffee while I waited for my room to be ready and a kind gentleman stored my belongings. She said she would do her best to get me into a room as soon as possible due to the cold weather and being alone on the trip. Around 12:30/1 she was able to get me into a lovely room on the 5th floor and worked efficiently to make sure I had everything I needed!! She called to double check I was comfortable and ensure me that she was there for anything. The gentleman who helped me store my belongings and carry my stuff up to my room was incredible as well - he knew all about the amenities of the hotel, the room, and the surrounding area to provide me with any extra details I might need during my stay. Happy to say, the staff makes this place a tremendous spot!! Best, Mary Read less

Sajeda at the front desk greeted and showed us the hospitality that any traveler can ask for. Seeing her after a long day of traveling she made things so easy for us. The Roxy is such a great hotel and we love all the entertainment options they have. We loved our stay and will definitely be back!!

Our first stay at the Roxy and in the Soho area, usually opting to stay further uptown. The hotel is very trendy – a striking building on the confluence of 6th avenue and church street. The interior is characterised by exposed brick, moody lighting and modern, black finishes. As a party of 2, we stayed in the One Bedroom suite, with one of us on the sofa bed in the sitting room – very comfortable. We were disappointed that the room did not come with the turntable, as advertised on the website, however, it was spacious, had 2 televisions, a nespresso machine and good views over 6th avenue. The bathroom is small with a very low, small bath/shower. We were on the 8th floor (top floor) and in a corner far away from the centre of the hotel, however, at night we could still hear the band playing downstairs. We naturally went to bed quite late so this didn’t bother us too much, however, if you are early sleepers or have young children this may be more of an issue, especially if on lower floors/not tucked away in a corner. The main bar/lounge on the lobby floor is the centre of the hotel with guests and visitors dropping by for a coffee at Jack’s, or breakfast/brunch/lunch at the bar throughout the day. There is a pool table along with several backgammon tables for guests to use. Breakfast is delicious – the menu has American classics, such as pancakes, French toast and bagels, as well as eggs and a Full English. The offer of either an American or Full English Breakfast + juice + coffee/tea is good value. The smoked salmon, cream cheese, onion bagel was very tasty with generous portions. At around 6pm the live music starts with a regular pianist on for 2 hours, normally followed by a jazz band from 8 until around 10. There is a great, fun atmosphere with a busy crowd of all ages either there for pre-supper drinks, supper, or a late nightcap. Recommend going for drinks before or after supper – cocktails are delicious and the atmosphere fabulous, however, the hotel do get snippy if you only order a drink each and almost force you to order more drinks or some food as well. Reserve in advance as it can be very busy. We had booked to go to the Django bar downstairs to see their band there, however, the act for our night was cancelled due to Covid and I honestly can’t see what the difference between the two bars would’ve been given the music and vibe upstairs in the main bar. Unfortunately, the service was lacking across the board during our stay. The front desk were unhelpful, rude and unapologetic when our check-in time was late, although the senior manager did waive the tourist tax for 2 nights of our stay because of this. The bell hop was more welcoming and helpful than anyone at the front desk upon arrival. Furthermore, despite being told the night before that the front desk would help us get a taxi early the next morning, we were then told that he could not leave the desk as he was the only one on duty and we’d have to find our own taxi. The taxi service is non-existent, the hotel are only helpful if you want to book one of their more expensive ‘town cars’, otherwise it’s a ‘go and find one yourself’ attitude. Being English we requested a kettle in the room, however, the hotel did not have any more available. Therefore, as we already had teabags with us, I called down to request some hot water for which I was told I would be charged $5 for the water and $4 for the water to be delivered to my room – I have never heard something so ridiculous. We also made several other requests during our stay, such as for large coffee cups, rather than espresso cups, more toiletries and for the sofabed to be prepared, all of which never materialised first time round, some second and third time too when eventually we just gave up. You only get 5mb per day of WiFi for free, which is nothing. You think you’d get more staying in a suite at a good hotel, especially in this day and age where everything is online. Location-wise the area around the hotel is hit and miss. Broadway is close by and although it is not as busy as Times Square, the area feels quite touristy and unauthentic. If you do your research beforehand, however, there are some great restaurant finds nearby and the West Village isn’t too far for local cafés, shops and walks. It was a 20 minute taxi up to Sax’s, Bloomingdales, Central Park etc. though and we did miss this area being on our doorstep. Overall we had an enjoyable stay at the Roxy hotel. Recommend as a vibrant, atmospheric hotel suited to a short trip to New York - just be prepared to get your walking shoes on to get uptown and don’t expect any help from the staff. Read less
