Peermont D'Oreale Grande at Emperors Palace

Johannesburg, South Africa

Virgin rating

The hotel

The luxurious Peermont D’oreale Grande is the flagship hotel of Emperors Palace, Joburg’s exciting casino, convention and entertainment complex. The resort’s only 5-star retreat, it may be stationed right by O.R. Tambo International Airport, but it’s no ordinary airport hotel. They’ve laid on all the bells and whistles to satisfy even the most demanding business traveller – indulgences holidaymakers also get to enjoy. There’s the elegant dining of Aurelia’s; the sumptuous serenity of Octavia’s day spa; the casual atmosphere of the pool; the ‘business traveller essentials’ of complimentary WiFi, a 24-hour gym, and an airport shuttle; and utterly lavish excesses like a gallery and casino.

Peermont D’Oreale Grande Hotel. Grande it certainly was, being part of the Emperor’s Palace complex near to Johannesburg airport, comprising three hotels, casino, conference centre, shopping mall and food mall and other facilities that we were not party to. We arrived many hours before we’d anticipated, but we were able to go to our room which was perfectly acceptable. Our light lunch however was something of a lottery, as some items that we’d ordered duly arrived, but some did not, while items that we specifically had not ordered were brought to our table. After lunch we decided to relax for a few hours by the pool, only to be confronted by a situation that as far as I was concerned was unprecedented. There were as many ducks as sun beds around the pool, but no duck restrooms were provided so the area around pool was liberally populated with duck ‘poops’, which made the area less than pleasant to say the least - other descriptions are available. We had to request that the area was cleaned and a less than thorough exercise was eventually conducted, but by time it was completed the ducks had returned and rendered the exercise more or less futile. After an hour or so by the pool and watching the dismal attempt to make the area poop-free we returned to our room, prior to venturing forth for pizza in the Italian Kitchen, not wishing to repeat our lunch experience in the hotel restaurant. The hotel is part of an enormous complex and very conveniently located for Johannesburg airport, but for us it will be remembered for the ducks!! Read less

Good hotel if in transit. There is a complimentary bus service to and from the airport (directly opposite the Intercontinental Hotel for pick up). Enjoyed a cocktail at the hotel bar (although it was extremely loud and smoking is allowed outside), so we only stayed for one drink. Easy walking access to the casino and mall with all of the restaurants (try Tribes for amazing Ribs!). Although we enjoyed our stay, I would consider staying at the Intercontinental next time, as you can walk directly to the hotel from airport and the facilities more our style (eg not quite so loud in the hotel bar/restaurant). So close to the airport this hotel 🏨 is perfect 😍 for getting over a long ✈️ flight from uk 🇬🇧 . No aircraft noise at all. Our first time in Africa. We stayed for 2 nights. Great complex next door with casino 🎰. It’s a bit like a mini vegas. Lovely staff. Breakfast you pick from the menu and prepared to order. The pool 🏊‍♀️ isn’t open till April but the ducks 🦆 seemed to like it. Loads of restaurants to choose from in emperor’s complex. You can use walkway from hotel lobby to get there. We went to hooters one night and tribe (wagyu beef 🥩 amazing) the other. Would definitely stay here again. Read less

Beautiful reception area. Stunning decor over the Christmas holiday. Unfortunately the overall stay wasn’t great. The hotel isn’t very kid friendly. I requested a kettle for the room as I was traveling with my 1 year old and needed to make his bottle. Both reception and housekeeping blatantly refused and didn’t try to assist. Resturant downstairs was decent , the host was pleasant and welcoming. But again, the Resturant did not cater for kids. We requested a baby chair , after refusing to assist - they eventually brought us a baby chair. Every morning for the 3 days that we stayed - this was a problem for staff. We also requested a cot for the room , which they happily assisted but every day the cleaning ladies would dismantle it and remove all the sheets so every afternoon we had put this cot together. The housekeeping staff did not put in clean towels and we had to make 6 calls to reception and housekeeping for bath towels. Definitely not what I expected. Read less
