Mondrian, South Beach

1 of 8 photos
WEATHER HERE

There are no rooms! Every guest gets a studio or apartment – the convenience of a residence with the luxury of hotel service. The Mondrian South Beach is a curved piece of Modernist architecture with an interior designed by controversial Marcel Wanders. The style is definitely post Minimalist with a sophisticated colour palette of gold, black and white. With his trademark chandeliers throughout, comfort in the sensual sense is given centre stage inside and out. The huge pool with private cabanas and individual plunge pools, surrounded by a lush garden, lounge areas, secret pathways and kissing areas is definitely not your average pool. The setting is straight out of CSI Miami, the silhouette of downtown Miami is behind the expansive blue waters of Biscayne Bay. Because it faces west it also has the sunsets; best watched with a mojito in hand from the bayside bar or private rooftop bar.

I have stayed at other hotels in this group (Morgans) like the Sanderson in London, but didn't realize it until I walked into the foyer and recognized the style. I must admit I enjoy the Over The Top... Read more lamps and outrageous decor and it really gets you into the South Beach atmosphere. The pool area is quite a scene with great views over the sea. Also the hotels is an easy walk into the retail/eating action of Lincoln-Washington Streets. If you are into running a nice jog is to come out of the hotel turn right towards the marina and follow the sea through to South Beach and enjoy the art deco buildings until you need to loop back along say 12th street. The credit-card rent-as-you-go bikes are also a great option with a stand close to the hotel (near the Starbucks). Its not super luxury, but certainly a fun hotel. Enjoy! Read less

I stayed here for a one night quick visit to Miami and was impessed with the hotels grand lobby as soon as you walk in. The big staircase was stunning too and really gave you the wow factor. I was... Read more expecting this to be a pretentious hotel but was pleasently surprised. The staff at check in were very helpful and the guys at the valet parking were fab too. The rooms are very bright and spacious and modern. The bathrooms are very well designed and I adored the chandelier shower head! The pool area is very fasionable and the drinks at the bar were reasonably priced considering. Not the best location for an evening if you are going by foot, would always reccommend taxi or car...after all this is Miami. Read less

We stayed here for a long weekend. The lobby is very nice and luxurious but we weren't too impressed with much else. Our room had a view of the inter coastal which was great but the room itself was... Read more just ok.There are no drawers to put away our clothes and not enough hangers in the closet. The bed was so uncomfortable and the curtain that blocked out the sun wouldn't close unless we stood on a chair and pulled it from the top. The doors are paper thin. The noise coming from the hallway at 1,3 and 5 in the morning was unbelievable. People wander in and act as if it was 2 in the afternoon. The pool staff and area are very nice but I wouldn't stay here again. It just didn't live up to the hype. At the price we paid we expected more. Read less

Our family of 4 stayed here. I thought, from the website, that it looked really cool and I've been to the Soho Mondrian for lunch, so I know the vibe. It seemed like it would be fun for a weekend. I... Read more checked out the Mondirian on Tripadvisor, of course, and looked at a few other hotels. With a nonrefundable deal we got a few months before, our 2 room suite was WAY cheaper than anything we could get on the Atlantic side. (My family would already be in Florida, visiting family, so the plan was to zip down to Miami.) About a week before, I looked on Tripadvisor for more details about the Mondrian, Miami, etc, and saw all these very nasty reviews and thought, "uh-oh". I warned my family that they should manage their expectations! When we arrived, right at check in time, there was some confusion and our room wasn't ready. They told us to hang out and gave us a chit for 2 drinks (a little odd, as we were 4 people -- two teens, but still -- they wouldn't pay for lemonades for them?) That's when I thought, "Here we go...". We waited for a bit and our room STILL wasn't ready, so they gave us another room -- a one bedroom -- down the hall from the room they were cleaning for us -- for us to hang out in, which was nice, but we wanted to get into our room! They also threw in free buffet breakfast for the duration of our stay, which made me feel better, but a little uneasy, as in ..."We're not getting off to a great start here..." and remembering all those nasty reviews! I think it was about an hour an a half wait before we got in. BUT, thereafter, we were happy! Our room -- magnificent, roomy, stylish. Great views over the bay, lovely shower and abundant Malin and Goetz toiletries, bedding soft and clean, quiet, good housekeeping. Everything great! My teens loved the hotel and felt very cool hanging out by the pool. To me, the pool was too small and warm, but I'm an ocean gal anyway.( I swam in the Atlantic, which was sublime.) The staff was super friendly and accommodating. I think, if you want a big room and to stay away from the noise and hubbub of the ocean side, the Mondrian is fantastic. We will probably stay there again. Read less
