We had a fantastic trip and would do it exactly the same again . I would like to return with my grandchildren for the snorkelling . It was literally like swimming in an aquarium . One didn’t need to go deep at all . You could literally snorkel in 1 m of water for starters . Clean , great accommodation and friendly staff .

Riu Atoll is a paradise island. It really is amazing. Staff are exceptional Room cleaning service is top notch. The person who made up our room daily is Dushan. Such a happy guy and every day he makes up the bed with different messages and towel art which was such a nice touch. The buffet is good and varies. The a la carte restaurants are a bit tricky to get into but we managed and enjoyed the offerings. The beach has powdery soft sand. The house reef is very good for snorkelling and with a bit of luck the Resident turtle can be seen. Also lots of fish around the reef. We stayed in an overwater bungalow which was awesome. First 4 days on sunset side which is special in its own way. Then 3 nights on opposite sunrise side which provided afternoon shade and was equally special. Pool bar service was great with Jessica and Pasi on Atoll side and James on Palace side. We had access to palace side during last 3 days of our stay because our friends that travelled with us ended up on that side because of an upgrade and we were far separated as a result. They preferred the laid back atmosphere on palace side and the fact that you didn’t have to fetch drinks from the bar as there were waiters serving. I preferred this too. The difference also is a drink in a glass instead of plastic cup. Food could be ordered at the pool bar and eaten where you were seated whereas this was not the case at Atoll. Then again i suppose that is why you pay extra at the palace side. Pool bar closes at 18:30 at Atoll and then you would have to move to where the nightly entertainment was or to the sports bar which had no atmosphere really. At palace side the pool bar stayed open after 18:30. It would be great if the resort could have a beach bar at Atoll side close to the sandbank, as it is far removed from the pool bar for those who want to spend a couple of hours there and not be dry mouthed in the blistering heat. Golf cart shuttle between palace and Atoll side is good and definitely essential given the distance between the two islands for guests of palace wishing to cross over to Atoll. Palace guests can visit Atoll and use facilities but not vice versa. This makes total sense though. Transfers to the island via seaplane and back to Dhaalu atoll via boat and then domestic plane were seamless and it was an added touch upon arrival at Male airport on our return to find Riu representative to see us through to international departures. Kudos for that. Overall fantastic experience. Read less
