Hyatt Centric Times Square New York

Virgin rating

The hotel

In a city where it's all about location, nothing beats a stay in Manhattan's theatre district, moments from the most guidebook-worthy sights, shops, and dining. You can survey all that surrounds you from Bar 54. Fittingly named, it sits on the 54th floor of Hyatt Centric Times Square – making it the highest hotel rooftop lounge in the whole of NYC. It doesn't just give you magical Manhattan views though, it also delivers small plates, handcrafted cocktails, and unique seating in igloo-style bubbles. You can get a view on Manhattan from your guest room too, with its floor-to-ceiling windows sure to distract from the complimentary Wi-Fi. When you're not staring at or exploring the city, the hotel's also home to Times Square's only full-service spa.

The overall stay was just below the average. It's important to watch out for hidden fees, as others have mentioned. At Bar 54, they added an extra ~20% tip charge, even though it had already been included in the bill. The concierge accused me of having breakfast or spending money elsewhere, not considering them making a mistake or attempting a robbery on customers. I anticipated something like this might happen, so I took a photo for evidence, which they eventually removed after the desk consulting with the bar manager. Despite proactive measures like taking a photo for proof, addressing such issues shouldn’t be necessary. Regarding the front desk, the customer service was inconsistent. I noticed the same concierge who had gone above and beyond for other guests, but unfortunately, that level of service wasn't extended to me. Despite being assured of receiving a text when my room was ready from her, I never received one. When I also called to ask any questions from the room, the man on the phone sounded bothered. I requested a late checkout, but despite being told the man arranged it already, cynically, a housekeeper knocked on my door the next day near checkout time and called the phone in the room, unaware of the arrangement. Despite this experience, I must acknowledge the exceptional kindness of the gentleman with glasses at the front desk last Sunday night. Also, a lady with a long ponytail upon checking out was very kind. Their exemplary service stood out amidst the other shortcomings. As for the room, I was upgraded with AmEx, which offered a view of Times Square. However, I was surprised that the room lacked basic amenities like a refrigerator or coffee maker. It's also tricky for the ride services to get into this alley in front of the hotel because the traffic is mostly bad. I had to walk a little towards the crosswalk so they could pick me up. In all honesty, it's quite a stretch to consider this hotel a 4-star establishment; it felt more like a 3-star experience, and even then, some 3-star hotels surpass this one. I wouldn't recommend staying here unless your entire itinerary revolves around spending time in Times Square. Read less

Upon booking, I called and was assured of a Times Square view and a rooftop bar that served food, which were deciding factors in my choice. However, the room’s view was unsatisfactory, and the rooftop bar lacked dining options. This was contrary to the confirmation I received prior to my arrival. I had to leave because I was in NY for the Boxing match. However; to address my concerns, I spoke with Staff the following morning, who initially reassured me that food, specifically wings, was available at the rooftop bar. This conversation was contradicted moments later by another staff member in her presence, who informed me that it was not the case. This inconsistency was not only confusing but also left me feeling unwelcome. Moreover, when I considered extending my stay, hoping for a better experience, staff informed me that I could not preview the suite before deciding to move, which was the deciding factor in my decision to leave for the W Hotel, where my needs were met with greater flexibility and hospitality.
