The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

A little excessive, yet the staff was so prompt and efficient it didn't bother me. We stayed 2 nights. My daughters attended a concert at Scotia, this is the main reason I chose Royal York. Check wad no problem. Quickly received my cash deposit and my vehicle was waiting at the door for. I got message asking if I needed to extend my stay. I should have! The next 4 nights I stayed at 2 different hotels-same rating, and it was not quick and easy to check in. I still haven't received to cash deposit from one. The staff assured me it would me returned to my credit card, I didn't use credit. The reception was vapid, all of them! I was frustrated so I left with my $$. The pass keys deactivated atleast 10 times. Suffice it to say, I've learned. I've experienced 2 other establishments and I will return to the Royal York. Read less

Attention to detail, cleanliness, consistency, informative and helpful staff are amongst the many reasons we stay at the Royal York! We have yet to be disappointed. Top notch and by far the best hotel chain. Thank you for all of your hard work and attention to all the things that matter.

Overall, our stay was wonderful. The room was great once we figured how to operate the lights and the 18th floor was superb. There is one major issue management should fix and soon. We stopped in at the Reign Bar for a Bloody Caesar. We each had one and they are absolutely the worst Bloody Caesars ever. I've had Bloody Caesars all over the country, every bar in Canada makes one. I can go to a dive bar and get a great Bloody Caesar but apparently not in a fancy hotel like the Royal York. We had one drink and left. I'll bet nobody that's ever had a Bloody Caesar there ever ordered a 2nd one. I usually will have 3 or 4 before heading up to my room but not here. The problem is management not the bartender. Instead of using Mott's Clamato Juice (as you should) they used some weird solution called "Water's". I'm told it has spices in it. What it doesn't have in it is flavor. I would have never expected a place like the Royal York Hotel to make such a very bad drink as this. Look it, The Bloody Caesar is this nation's most popular cocktail and you failed miserably to make a good one. The hotel manager and the bar manager need to correct this immediately. The national drink of Canada can be made in a dive bar better than at a fancy hotel like the Royal York. The Royal York hotel should be embarrassed and totally ashamed of themselves for screwing up this widely famous cocktail. I would much rather you raise the price of this drink than to continue to use substandard ingredients that are currently in use. (Even the celery salt was bad). Some bean counter figured this cheaper way would be better for the hotel, WELL IT'S NOT! The Royal York hotel's version of a Bloody Caesar is a disgrace. I highly recommend the managers of the hotel and the bar order one of these drinks and report back. Where's the quality control here? Does anyone ever taste test the products in this bar? The superb food and all the exquisite details used on the 18th floor should also be front and center in this supposedly looking refined bar called The Reign Bar. Furthermore, I am insulted that the management of this place apparently doesn't think we Bloody Caesars drinkers would know the difference in the ingredients used in this drink, WE SURE DO. Martini drinkers are very fussy about their martinis. James Bond wants his shaken, not stirred, get the point. Real Bloody Caesars drinkers also want their drinks made correctly. (No, I don't work for the Mott's Company). The next time I come to Toronto I will first find a hotel that knows how to make a Bloody Caesar before I make my reservation. The only thing keeping me from giving this hotel a 5 is because of the awful Bloody Caesar. I really like this place, so I hope they start making a normal Bloody Caesar. Read less

This is my 3rd stay at this hotel. While it is very convenient location, it is absolutely hideous. My experience: - in April I was given a room in a block with problems with warm water so we could only have cold showers. - the breakfast restaurant requires a reservation, even if you are staying at the hotel and if you don’t have it you need to go on a waiting list. To make things worst they only open at 7am and room service starts at 6.30am. If you are visiting from oversee and you have jet lag there is not way to find food earlier - they advertised sauna and steam Bath but they do not work - the kitchen doesn’t accommodate simple requests like vegan sandwich. In summary I will avoid it for the future. Read less
