Lanzerac Manor & Winery

Stellenbosch, Winelands

The hotel

Seemingly lost in the vineyards and foothills of Jonkershoek Valley, this hideaway is wrapped in hypnotically beautiful scenery – but is just five minutes from the historic town of Stellenbosch. Since the first vines were planted more than 300 years ago, Lanzerac Hotel & Spa has become a haven for oenophiles. And its legacy lives on, with its ancient oak trees, historic wine collection, original design features, and time-honoured viticulture techniques still used on this working wine farm. You can drink in vineyard views from your elegant room, which opens onto the estate’s gardens. And you can drink in the world-famous Lanzerac wines in the tasting room, after a tour of the bottle-lined wine cellar. On the off-chance you fancy a break from the wine, you can indulge in spa treatments or relax in the gardens with a picnic from the gourmet deli.

Had lunch at the Delhi under the trees. Awesome atmosphere, surrounded by a surreal garden. The menu is extensive and even serves all day breakfast. The service by waiter Emmanuel was outstanding. He is the most friendly waiter ever and extremely knowledgible about their products. Would highly recommend this superb restaurant for all meals.

Such a stunning place & spa to get away for a few days in pure luxury. Since we couldn't travel abroad after getting married this was the perfect balance of tranquility & not too far from Cape Town. Definitely coming back!

A weekend away could not be more perfect. Fantastic staff. Attention to detail visible throughout the grounds and rooms. The spa and facilities was a real treat. Make sure to make use of the wine tasting voucher and breakfast at the Deli. I will definitely be back.

Lanzerac is a beautiful estate. It is one of the reasons we chose it as the venue for my sister's birthday afternoon tea. While we were welcomed and treated wonderfully, the tea itself was unfortunately disappointingly average. On a beautiful Spring afternoon, tea was held indoors. The wonderful Boland surroundings - which has the power to elevate a piece of dry toast to haute cuisine - entirely lost. The indoor venue itself had not even a flower in sight. Bare tables. No crisp white tablecloths. No neat, crisp table setting. Afternoon teas after all, are meant to be pampered and gorgeous - even before your first sip of a cuppa. Talking of teas, the selection was so very, very frugal. A box was brought around from which one could select TWG sachets. We could choose from Moroccan mint, Breakfast, Camomile, Earl Grey and one other I think. No Lapsong Suchong. No Japanese Sencha. In short, nothing beyond the ordinary. The cups were not warmed. The wooden sugar server was sprinkled with sugar from a previous use and a wipe with a serviette to clean it came up black. The menu itself was ok. The desserts far outshone the savoury. This could be because we had reserved halal. And we assume that to accomodate this reservation request, at least 70% of the savoury menu ended up being smoked salmon. It was uninventive for a 5 star establishment with a renowned kitchen. Everthing, save for two tartlets, was served on bread rolls which, while they may have been fresh, were hard and dry and certainly would not have received a Paul Hollywood handshake. The savoury profiteroles were dry and clumpy. Overall, it's not that the afternoon was incredibly bad, it's just that it wasn't incredibly good either. It lacked refinement. It lacked the finesse one expects of an indulgent, graceful afternoon tea saying oohs and ahhs at the presentation and substance of the service as a whole. Our table was piled with used plates at one end and was only removed once we had requested for it to be done so. Afternoon tea is something we really enjoy and look forward to whenever we have the opportunity to do so. Sadly, Lanzerac's needs substantial polish to truly match its five star status and the beauty of surroundings. Its such a pity. We were looking forward to it all week. Read less
