Lanzerac Manor & Winery

Stellenbosch, Winelands

The hotel

Seemingly lost in the vineyards and foothills of Jonkershoek Valley, this hideaway is wrapped in hypnotically beautiful scenery – but is just five minutes from the historic town of Stellenbosch. Since the first vines were planted more than 300 years ago, Lanzerac Hotel & Spa has become a haven for oenophiles. And its legacy lives on, with its ancient oak trees, historic wine collection, original design features, and time-honoured viticulture techniques still used on this working wine farm. You can drink in vineyard views from your elegant room, which opens onto the estate’s gardens. And you can drink in the world-famous Lanzerac wines in the tasting room, after a tour of the bottle-lined wine cellar. On the off-chance you fancy a break from the wine, you can indulge in spa treatments or relax in the gardens with a picnic from the gourmet deli.

The food is excellent both at breakfast and around the pool area which is quiet but lovely. The room was stunning and well equipped with a mini bar which you can help yourself to. The hotel is situated on a real wine estate and the tours and tasting are also great fun. It is a place to put on your list to go to. If your travelling from the UK or the USA and staying in Stellenbosch then book here. Its 5 mins in an Uber into the town where there are also some great restaurants but if you love tranquillity, quality and a desire to serve then book some time to stay at the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa. You won't regret it Read less

After evaluating a number of lodging options, we decided to stay at the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa. A mile-long passage between elderly trees with brought us to the up-scale hotel which occupies a whitewashed, 17th-century Cape Dutch building, views of the Jonkershoek Mountains, on a wine estate. Our room rates included breakfast and wine tastings, plus the use of a spa with an indoor pool, a steam room and a sauna. Treatments (at extra cost) at the Lanzerac Spa take place against a stunning backdrop of mountains and vineyards. There are also four restaurants, a gym and an outdoor pool. Our room was lavish, has a private patio facing the mountains and its own semi-private swimming pool. This place rivals any that we have stayed in for amenities, obsequious attention and lavish ambiance. That said, the “Lanzerac Manor Kitchen” restaurant, the fanciest of the four at the hotel, while having the expected class of ornate dishes at high prices, somehow didn’t hit it out of the park for us. The included breakfast was also served here and was quite lavish (even had fresh oysters on the half-shell and champagne). The Lanzerac Deli turned out to offer large sandwiches at reasonable prices and we paired that with the free 5 glass wine tasting the hotel supplied as an amenity to the room for an inexpensive comprehensive dinner. The one negative was the restaurant service, while very polite, was slow in both restaurants (maybe it’s just the New Yorker in me who takes prompt service for granted). Read less

This is a wonderful hotel in a fabulous setting. The approach from the gates down the tree lined drive is simply beautiful. You are met at the door with cool flannels and champagne, bags taken off and the car parked for you. Check in is quick and easy and we had a delightful suite overlooking the drive with mountain view. We used our complimentary wine tasting voucher selecting the wine and chocolate option which was great. The deli, where the wine tasting and cellar tour take place is also great as you can get little snacks and sit outside with a coffee. We had dinner in the Kitchen Restaurant which is the more formal of the two restaurants. The food is okay but not amazing. Its a little fancy and its almost like they try a bit too hard and there is too much going on, on the plate. I had Pork Belly with crackling. There was 2 big pieces, too much for me, and the crackling wasn’t crispy. For dessert i had Passion Fruit Posset, which was soft and sloppy rather than set, with lots of other stuff on it that didn’t need to be there. For breakfast i had Buttermilk Flapjacks which were like pancakes, it was huge, with lots of maple syrup, creme fraiche, fried banana and a lot of bacon, way too big and sweet. Its a lovely place to relax and i would love to return but i would not eat there, if you’re ok with the food, you do not need to leave the estate for the duration of your stay. Read less
