The hotel

A deluxe resort, inspired by Thailand’s rich culture, Khaolak Merlin Resort also enjoys a divine rainforest location on a gently sloping hillside and is surrounded by well-manicured, lush gardens. Guests enjoy direct access to a private stretch of beach, perfect for relaxing in the afternoon sun. The facilities are great and will please all the family. As well as four swimming pools, there’s a kids' pool complete with water slide and a kids' playground. When it comes to dining, the aptly-named Tropical Garden is open all-day and serves International favourites as well as local fare. For something a little more romantic, head to Veranda, a beachside restaurant serving delicious seafood. The village centre is just a stroll away and offers more eating options, alternatively, take a taxi to the centre of Khao Lak for a wider choice. After doing a lot of research we spent 5 nights here and then another 4 nights at the Haven Khao Lak. I rate both 5 stars but for very different reasons - if I had to choose between the two i would probably rate this higher. Merlin is a more traditional Thai hotel. whilst the Haven is a larger more modern hotel with massive pools surrounding the complex. The Merlin does show its age in places however our bedroom (Deluxe) has been very tastefully refurbished with amazing bathroom and comfortable beds. Only ate breakfast here (apart from afternoon tea) as there are a number of good (and not so good) restaurants within a short walk. Breakfast was good but not great with reasonable selection. A juicer/smoothie station would be a welcome addition. I think I would be bored with the food after a week. Bread and pastries could be better. Hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. The grounds and pools are pleasant. But The Haven beats Merlin hands down in terms of swimming pool and gym facilities. The gym at the Merlin is very basic and needs updating. Although I wouldn't wish to spend 14 nights here I would certainly go back for a shorter stay as I really enjoyed it. .It is in a quiet area but not isolated like the Haven. I think for the price I paid it was one of the best hotel bargains I have ever had. Read less

We travelled with our 3 boys who had their own room we paid for 2 Delux rooms on the 2nd floor with full bathrooms with lovely free standing tub and great separate shower. Our balconies over looked one of the 4 lovely pools kids loved the swim up bar. We stayed on a B and B basis but took lunch and several dinners at the hotel. Could not fault anything the food breakfast choices cleanliness staff games room choice of pools restaurants all excellent. We are totally sold on Thailand after this our first holiday. Our boys said it was their best holiday ever (and they are pretty well world travelled). The beach is beautiful the garden areas are great and we saw lots wildlife around the grounds. We took 2 day trips booked via the hotel one with EcoKhaoLak to see the Elephants and Turtle Conservation project and a snorkelling day at the Similian Islands 90 mins out by speed boat with WowAndaman Highly recommend to all we would definitely go back. All the Staff are an asset to the owners, they are so friendly & Helpful. Sea was warm and excellent for swimming, views on the beach where picture postcard. We spotted numerous frogs and Lizards / Geckos whilst there, always check your Sun loungers / Beach bags. We found all inclusive to be a good option, for our first trip to Thailand. Maybe if you are closer to a town it might not be? The Hotel is some way away from Khao Lak, But is about 3min walk from a few bars, supermarkets, tailors, massage businesses, Cash Machines etc. (Tailors very pushy). Hotel not really suitable for people who have difficulty walking. We booked trips from shop on lane on right Nr T junction. They all tried to get us to go on Elephant trek trip (Not Elephant Friendly), But we eventually managed to get a trip to the Seaside Elephant Retreat and Turtle Sanctuary (Mr Bee was our guide). Well worth the money. We also went to James Bond Island. Worked out about £85 - £90 each for both, after a little haggle. Bad bits: Very Humid, Bitten alive by Mosquitos (You can But 95% Deat Mosquito repellent in the Supermarket over there, ours are only 50% in UK). Hotel Air Con kept going warm during the night, whilst we were asleep, but worked fine during day? There was a few power cuts whilst there, which are normal & a torch is provided in your room. You tend to get a better Money exchange rate over there. Read less
