Bijou Banff seems even more pocket-sized thanks to the cosmic scale of the national park cocooning it. But don’t let its size deceive you; Banff delivers big on attractions. It was the discovery of the natives’ ‘healing’ hot springs by railway workers in 1883, which turned this off-map basin into a crowd-puller – and a national park. The lively streets of downtown Banff are lined with top-class restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as a vibrant range of art galleries and museums.
Take a leisurely drive from Jasper to Banff, enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Icefields Parkway (3-4 hours).
Most come for the mountains, which lure hikers and bikers in summer. But its’ more demure delights include simply soaking in the Banff Upper Hot Springs, riding the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain, to amble along its peak-hugging boardwalk, or taking scenic trips to beauty spots like Moraine Lake and the Columbia Icefield.
