Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski

Havana, Cuba

The hotel

Part of the fabric of hypnotically beautiful Old Havana, this Grande Dame of the city sits among its champagne-coloured buildings and World Heritage sites. Virtually at its feet you’ll find iconic El Floridita, where Hemingway used to hang out – but reach its rooftop and you’re rewarded with city views, with El Capitolio and Central Park two of your closest neighbours. You’ll have infinite opportunities to soak up those city scenes while you’re up there, with an al fresco sitting room, poolside cocktail bar, panoramic restaurant, and urban-chic pool, whose glazed screen separates you from the sky beyond. There’s no mistaking your setting downstairs either – with the elegant rooms’ French windows framing the city, and the light-flooded cigar lounge fringed with eight balconies, so you can gaze out over Central Park as you sip Cuban rum, while the Cigar Sommelier hand-rolls cigars.

had a friend visit my room for 4 minutes at 2pm in afternoon. hotel staff called police because of the friend visited. apparently it is against law for a friend to visit room even if for only a few minutes. the hotel staff had nazi style controls on the hotel. besides this the restaurant on roof has a nice view but horrible slow service.

This hotel is nestled in the city, along with others but the ambience was quite classy, lovely hotel, interesting architecture, beautiful decor. Our suite was spacious with all amenities. WiFi though, shut off once your phone went off/slept. Once you're going to any other floor and you need to use WiFi, you must walk with the password printout given to you upon checking in. The 6th floor serves lunch and dinner. however, the menu is the same and not too many options for children, especially if they are picky eaters like my children-no french fries, or fried chicken so please do your research. There are pasta items and pizza though. However, the staff did their very best to accommodate us. Read less

Although pricey, we were very happy we picked this hotel. Having worked in Cuba, I transited thru Havana, and told myself sometime I am going to come back and walk this city. The Kempinski could not be better located for walking all these interesting areas: Old Havana, Central Havana, The Malecon, Paseo de Marti, The Harbor, Vedado, to name a few. This hotel is about as close as you are going to get to a 5 star in Cuba. We went exploring for our meals so we did not eat at the hotel but the one time we were looking for a late lunch in the hotel, we found nothing, this was the only negative. The rooms are superior, as were: maids, bar service staff, desk staff, bellman, concierge, they were superior to what you find in Cuba. The concierge: -went out of his way to find me a bag [that I could pack in toys to give to a church, but he did not know this was what it was for]. -when our car trip was on a late pick-up they instantly called, not looking at us and thinking "this is Cuba, what is your concern"! ha ha The hi-light of the Kempinski, was the service, the mojito and the view from the rooftop bar!, something not to be missed when coming to Havana Read less

That was my 8th trip to Cuba and having visited over 12 cities in Cuba, can say this was undoubtedly the nicest hotel in the entire country. Rooms, location, food, and service were all amazing! So amazing, that I decided to take my mom there for her 90th birthday on Apr 1, 2020 (in 2 weeks). However, due to the coronavirus and all the US travel restrictions, I contacted the travel agent I used to book this (Nash Travel out of Canada) to cancel the trip. They indicated that the hotel still required I pay a 1-night penalty which for 2 rooms is over $1000 USD. I then contacted the hotel who indicated that there would be NO cancellation penalties. To my disbelief, Nash Travel is still charging me the 1-night penalty saying the hotel is requiring it even though I provided them with written confirmation they would not. I will NEVER book another trip with Nash due to their unethical practices and they have blemished the reputation of this excellent hotel with their claims that the hotel is requiring a penalty which they have indicated to me they are not.
