NH Capri

Havana, Cuba

The hotel

Designed by Cuban architect Jose Canaves in 1956, the NH Capri embodies all that was glorious about the decade whilst still offering the ultimate in contemporary comfort. Once the playground of the famous and the hedonistic, including the very dashing Errol Flynn, it is still considered to be one of Havana’s three most important buildings. The location is pretty good too — just a short walk from the seafront as well as shops, bars and restaurants galore. For great views, head on up to the 18th floor, not only will you be rewarded with panoramic city vistas, you’ll be able to splash about in the rooftop pool too! Azul Bar is also on high, located on the 17th floor, so again feast your eyes whilst sipping on a mojito, one time city resident Ernest Hemingway’s favourite tipple! Guest rooms are a delight, offering a good range of mod cons whilst still retaining that all-important fifties feel. For sumptuous dining, AnaCapri offers buffet delights on book a table at La Florentina for authentic Italian cuisine, fine wines and an atmosphere that’s electric.

A few blocks from the seawall and several great options for evening entertainment. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially with directions. Suni, the breakfast hostess, was very warm and welcoming. She is super nice and made sure everything was in place.

I rarely write a bad review as I give everyone & place the benefit of the doubt but I have to admit my experiences in Cuba & Havana especially have forced me to. We booked 4 nights in NH Capri as we have stayed in sister hotels in difference countries & although I had prepared myself for a lower standard of hotel in Cuba I would have expected the price to reflect this but I was sadly wrong!! Of all the hotels I have ever worked & stayed in regardless of star rating the service in this hotel ranks as the worst!! The majority of the staff with the exception of Naimur in the breakfast bar, our room maid & the female waitress in the lobby bar, the rest of the staff in hotel really seem genuinely annoyed & bothered by your presence , this is before you even ask for anything. This was experienced from check in to check out. From ordering food at the pool, or buying a WiFi card from reception, there were times when you literally would receive a scowl rather then a reply. I thought this may have just been the 1st day as everyone has bad days in service industry but you don’t show it or take it out on the guest especially when paying a lot of money to stay there. I genuinely think this place does not like tourists or they just hate their jobs 🤷🏼‍♂️ The food; If you’re-thinking the climate here would provide fresh tasting fruit & vegetables you would be wrong as when you do go to order from any parts of the hotel be prepared to hear we don’t have it or there is none. This is could be anything but not limited to pizzas, the local beer , meat, fish or even ketchup!!. When you do receive your meal don’t get your hopes up as you will be very disappointed if you do & out of pocket aswell! GOOD POINTS; The room wasn’t bad , at least the room was clean & air conditioned , try not look down at the carpets as you walk to your room though! The only half decent asset this hotel has is the rooftop pool which is small but nice. TAXIS: Please do not pay the rate the drivers bombard you with as you walk out of your 5 ⭐️ ??hotel...we only noticed this official price tag on our way home from Cuba listed in the pics below! They try to charge higher then an Irish taxi would it’s outrageous so don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself & barter for a cheaper price BEFORE you get in....there are hundreds of taxis so you will never be stuck! Also BEWARE of pedal taxis as a friend I met on holiday was charged €120 to cycle 3 blocks !!! No joke! ON THE STREET:::::: BEWARE of people coming up to you & offering you a Special deal for Cigars & Rum...that they have a friend that works in the factory & has smuggled out cheap genuine cigars. They lead you to their friends house & before you know it your bombarded & guilt tripped into buying something just to get out of there as I did 🙈. Do your research on how to spot fake cigars eg the box markings on the bottom, the labels and the detail as you will kick yourself for handing over money for something you thought was real! They may smoke or taste well and may well be from the factory but if they are from an apprentice worker there they will be sold without their rings so only offer to pay a much cheaper price !! Lastly if you still wish to stay in Havana in a 5 star Hotel then stay in Hotel Nacional rather than here!! Enjoy your trip! Read less

Stayed here for 3 nights in early May. Had a lovely room, with a view of the sea. Rooms spacious, clean, and quiet. We were on the 10th floor. Pool area small, but amazing views from the pool area. Breakfast had a great selection, including bizarrely tuna sandwiches. The freshly made to order omelettes are lovely. Staff keen to take your empty plate away. I asked one to leave on the table, as I still had some butter to use up, and before I knew it another waiter had whipped the plate away. Ordered a club sandwich from the rooftop bar and this was the only down point of our stay. I felt the order got forgotten, despite the pool area being very quiet and it took over 40 minutes to arrive. The excuse being the restaurant was busy, but it was 3.30 in the afternoon, so I found that excuse difficult to accept, and then we were still expected to pay full price. Taxi costs and Coco costs varied between 10 and 20 cucs into Havana, cheaper during the day. The floor in the bathroom got soaking wet from the shower, so had to be careful in there. There was a limit as to how much money you could change per day, we changed a £100, one day and was told that was the maximum. Plenty of restaurants around the area of the hotel. We would especially recommend Ideas, very cheap, delicious Cuban food. WiFi reception good in the lobby, 1.50 cuc an hour for a scratch card code. Ours lasted us the 3 nights, as we kept turning the WiFi off on the devices once finished searching. Staff at the lobby bar, very efficient and friendly. Overall would recommend this hotel. Read less

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. Having read previous reviews and the history attached to the hotel was expecting a bit more atmosphere. Found the hotel itself a little bland. The room was ok but could do with an update. The carpet on the landing was badly marked and smelled a bit damp like they had tried to clean it but still had the damp smell lingering. Booked a trip to Vinales and paid extra to have our own driver. A long day but very beautiful countryside. If I were travelling to Cuba again I think I would try and get a hotel nearer to Old Havana. The taxi trip there varied between 15 and 25 cuc depending on time of day. The hotel is however conveniently located to look at around Hotel National which is worth doing. They offer guided tours at different times of the day. Great to see the old cars but the emissions are so bad you can taste the fumes in the air. From the top of Hotel National you can see the haze across the city. The pool is great but quite small, ideal if you can get a sunbed. The food was ok in the pool bar. However the restaurant - top floor was lovely probably the nicest we had in Havana. Lovely views greeted with a glass of bubbly and lovely fresh bread. Considering it was in the hotel did not find it too expensive would certainly recommend. Read less
