Blau Varadero Hotel

Varadero, Cuba

The hotel

As if taking inspiration from the great pyramids, the designers of Blau Varadero cannily created a reclining hotel that captures as many ocean views as possible, and ensures everyone has a spacious balcony looking out over the water or gardens. By Varadero Beach, the atmosphere’s as laid back as the building, with oodles of space dedicated to relaxation and a huge lagoon pool centrepiece, with Jacuzzis, a pool bar, and a lounger and hammock-strung deck and garden. Only open to adults, all inclusive indulgence is the order of the day – and you can upgrade to Select Rooms and Suites for extras like complimentary massages or terraces.

I had never been to Cuba before and my expectations were very low. I am celiac, so not a lot of food options for me anywhere, never mind in Cuba. Wow - was I surprised! Was the food gourmet? no, was it tasty and filling? Yes. The chef at the pasta bar was so kind that by day 2 he knew exactly how I wanted my GF pasta, and brought it out to me daily. That’s definitely service. We booked a select room, which I would do again, as we prefer an a la carte dinner over the buffet. Keep in mind these people are doing the absolute best with what they have. Grade A steak just doesn’t exist. Their house wine was hot or miss, but their wine list at dinner was fine and extremely well priced. Cocktails and coffee (sooo good) combined with the service in the lobby bar made for a nice evening. The beach is to die for. The water clean, crystal clear and warm. I was shocked at the absolute beauty of it. We rented a Bali bed daily for the view and the shade. The beach bar service was fine, limited in selection, but entertaining and kind. Spent a day in Havana, and would definitely go back and spend a few days in the city before heading to Varadero. The architecture, history and culture are not to be missed. Our room was always spotless and our maid was amazing. We brought a lot of gifts to give away and she literally built a 6ft swan made of towels as a thank you. We have seen a lot of towel art on our travels, but this was a new one ;) Only complaint was the AC in our room wasn’t strong enough for my taste, but others we met were able to make theirs cooler. Bed comfy, shower worked fine and toilet flushed. Lol. As a last comment, I was SHOCKED at how little other guests tipped. We always reward good service, why wouldn’t you? They had no problem demanding things, but couldn’t reach into their wallets with their alligator arms. Each to his own, but I think that’s extremely rude. All in all, we will for sure be back. A quick flight in for some beach RnR (and no children)? Count us in. Read less

The answer is simple , outstanding service from a thoughtful and caring staff . A fabulous hotel that seems to be getting better with age and above all the only "surprises " are good ones ! Although it has an international guest list we find many Canadians and people from home that we look forward to seeing at the end of April each year . That is the ultimate compliment to any resort , the numbers of returning guests each year . Add on some of the nicest people from England & Scotland we met again this year , the glorious weather , good food , plenty of entertainment and good bar service , what more do you need . Thank you to the Blau for another relaxing and enjoyable vacation , see you in 2020 ! Read less

I didn't do too much research on this holiday, I just chose the resort because it looked nice and the hotel was chosen purely because it was adults only and that was it. Well, whatever we were expecting, it far exceeded it! We arrived after a long flight and a 25 minute transfer from the airport. There was a queue for check in which took around 20 minutes which isn't ideal, but staff were friendly. We were in Room 605, which overlooked the front of the hotel, which we liked as you could watch the American cars driving up and down the highway and the comings and goings at the main entrance of the hotel. A good size balcony too. The room was large with a huge bed and a large sofa, big TV, mini bar, chair and a good size bathroom with a great shower! There was also a magnifying mirror, hairdryer and a bidet. The hotel itself is a great design and brings the outside inside, it's a large open space with lots of seating and plants everywhere! Small birds fly throughout the plants which hang from the rooftop and they do chirp in a morning, but we couldn't hear them from the room. The main bar is on the ground floor where there is ample seating, however most of this has a 'smoking' area which isn't very nice when it's busy in an evening as people are sat smoking cigars and we moved a couple of times. It would be much better if it was no smoking. There is also the Piano Bar on the 3rd floor which is nice. We spent most evenings in this one as it usually had all the windows open and there was a lovely breeze going through it. (It also has the best wifi connection). There is also a games room downstairs with table tennis, shuffleboard, snooker, etc which we used a couple of times. Outside, a small bridge takes you to the pool which is huge and has a jacuzzi in it. There are various activities going on during the day. Clean towels can be obtained everyday, you just swap them when you want. There is another bar here which serves drinks all day and a buffet restaurant next to it for lunch. As you walk past this, there is a fresh fruit stall where you can help yourself to fruit served on stick which is nice and refreshing on your way to the beach. The gardens are vast and there are so many sunbeds there is no need to get up at silly o'clock to put towels on. As you walk through the gardens, you then cross a small bridge which takes you to the water sports office, a beach bar where you can have drinks and food 24/7 and then onto the beach! I have no words to describe the beach, but absolutely amazing! It's pure white sand and crystal clear warm water, there are no rocks and in two weeks we only saw one fish! We spent hours in the sea and stayed under the palm umbrellas on the beach and there is a constant warm wind blowing so it's cooler than being around the pool. There is a small beach bar which is handy for drinks too and a man on a quad bike that scoots past a couple of times a day with fresh pineapples filled with cocktails! At lunch time, we usually went to the beach bar for lunch, it serves fresh fish, sandwiches, pizza's with fries and fresh salad. There are pedalos, canoes and catamarans on the beach which are free too. You can have a 20 minute ride on a catamaran, you just have to tell them what time you want it. Due to the winds, it's usually early morning and late afternoons which is the best. In an evening we went to the main buffet which we thought was really good! Reading other reviews, I'm not sure what people were expecting, but for a country which is still on rations for locals and the restrictions on them, we thought they did an amazing job! There are at least 15 different breads (I tried most of them!) which are fresh every day. In a morning there are toasters out. There are 3 stations with chefs that cook meals for you, one is a pasta station, one is fish and beef and another which sometimes did a bit of Chinese or fresh roast meats. Then there is an array of vegetables, fries, fresh fruit, cheeses, cold meats, sauces, homemade soups and a vast dessert station. You can also get fresh smoothies made. In a morning these stations will cook eggs however you want them and fresh pancakes. There is so much food! We also went to the A La Carte restaurants twice each week, these have to be booked. The Italian was nice, but the International was really good! (Men have to wear trousers in these). You have three courses with wine served at the table and we really enjoyed both. Varadero Town: You can get an open top bus from outside on the main road which runs every 20 mins or so for 5 CUC each for the day with unlimited hop on/off in town. The town would take a good couple of hours to walk, so the bus is ideal. There are bars, restaurants, supermarkets, flea markets and an art gallery. We loved the town and went about three times. The only traffic you will see is American cars, horse and carts and small tuk tuks. They will all ask if you want a ride, but a polite 'no thanks' will do. We hopped on a horse and cart a couple of times and for 5 CUC, we went quite a way. We went to a couple of restaurants and found these to be really cheap. Everybody is so friendly and these is no hard sell, so just enjoy walking around and making friends. There is also a train from the hotel for 2 CUC each way, but it's only on the hour and we struggled to find it again, so we went back by bus. Trips: There are various trips you can book through the rep (we went with Thomas Cook). We did Havana overnight staying at the 5* National Hotel for 159 CUC each (£130). This is a must! 2hr air conditioned bus, couple of stops on the way, lunch and dinner included, then all the next day free in Havana. Worth every penny. Havana, Rum & Cigars - Fully guided Tour of Havana for the day was 89 CUC. Trinidad Overnight: 150 CUC - South of the Island Jeep Safari - 89 CUC Caribbean Experience - 69 CUC - This was good, we went to the bottom of the Island via the townships of Cuba which was fascinating, then had lunch in Playa Larga with two hours to swim in the Caribbean. Lovely day out. Catamaran Cayo - 101 CUC - Day out fishing and swimming on an Island Deep Sea Fishing - 395 CUC - We did this with another couple, early morning, 2 hours fishing. Good for those that like fishing. Didn't catch anything though. Catamaran fishing - 100 CUC - Early morning, 2 persons. We went early and came back with Red Snapper which we caught and the chef at the beach bar cooks it for your lunch. There are several more trips, nights out, etc. There is a lot to do. There is also entertainment every night at the hotel by the team which seemed popular although we never went. The animation do a great job of activities all around the resort throughout the day and night. WIFI: There is wifi at the hotel in the lobby, the main bar and the piano bar. You buy a scratch card from reception for 1 CUC (75p) and this is valid for 60 minutes. You do not have to use the full 60 minutes in one go, you can log on/off whenever you want. I used 46 cards over the two weeks, my other half used 2! There is no connection in your room. Pharmacy: On site. They have a range of medicines and access to a doctor. Gym: Good gym! (The other half used it everyday for a jog). Tips: It seems customary to tip as you go. Although this can mount up, we definitely felt like we got a slightly better service after tipping bar staff. (They do table service). We spent around 5 CUC each day tipping. Mosquitos: Take everything! Everybody was bitten and mine were quite bad. All in all, this is the best beach holiday we have ever had. After chatting to guests from other hotels on our trips and after the two weeks, we know that we chose the right hotel. The staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I could write a lot more about this hotel and holiday as there is so much to say, but I'll stop now. If you want any more information, please feel free to message me. Read less

If you are looking for a beach holiday this is ideal. Spent 4 nights in Havana prior to this. Room was good size and very clean - large balcony. Loved the central atrium with vines hanging and birds. Can understand some people would find this annoying but I thought it was lovely. The beach was lovely and sea shallow for quite a distance. Masses of sunbeds all around pool and surrounding areas utilising all the shade the trees provided. Cannot imagine that you could ever not find a sunbed no matter what time of day you arrive. Found the food good. Like all All Inclusives it can be a bit samey but I think you would have to be really fussy if you could not find anything you liked. Only thing we found annoying was making you queue some days to get into buffet restaurant so you could be shown to tables. We liked the furthest point in the restaurant so used to go straight through saying we had friends waiting. There was always plenty of tables there - just seemed pointless making people queue when they could find their own tables quicker!!! We did a trip to Trinidad - bad move. Were on coach in total 14 hours with a few stops for various places but had a total of 2 hours in Trinidad one hour of that was lunch. If you want to do Trinidad would suggest doing a tour with a few nights in Havana, Vinales, Trinidad otherwise it is a long way! Found the staff very attentive and polite with the exception of one of the reception staff who was rude and a bit of jobs worth. Loved the pool - only music playing when zumba etc on - none of this annoying booming music all day. Read less
