Blau Varadero Hotel

Varadero, Cuba

The hotel

As if taking inspiration from the great pyramids, the designers of Blau Varadero cannily created a reclining hotel that captures as many ocean views as possible, and ensures everyone has a spacious balcony looking out over the water or gardens. By Varadero Beach, the atmosphere’s as laid back as the building, with oodles of space dedicated to relaxation and a huge lagoon pool centrepiece, with Jacuzzis, a pool bar, and a lounger and hammock-strung deck and garden. Only open to adults, all inclusive indulgence is the order of the day – and you can upgrade to Select Rooms and Suites for extras like complimentary massages or terraces.

However, we were very disapointed with the room which lets the hotel down. We were provided with just one small bottle of shampoo and a body wash which was not replenished throughout our stay. Not even a handsoap. We frequently run out of loo roll and when we made ourselves coffee in the room the cups were not cleaned and coffee not replaced. Also, there was maintenance works being carried out by pool area which was annoying. But in general, we loved cuba and would certanly recomend going! Read less

There’s a few things the can improve on but all together it’s a great experience. After your first day here you discover everything that you need to know. The usage of plastic is insane so if you can bring your self a “keep cup” that would save you from using at least 100 cups in your stay.

Had two weeks early March travelled with Thomas Cook. Good rooms on 9th floor, in common with other reviews, the downside is not enough lifts. How the staff cope with their trolleys is a mystery. Coffee machine in room worked fine. No kettle available, it would also seem in the whole of this part of Cuba either. Water heated by coffee machine not… Read more

Coffee machine in room worked fine. No kettle available, it would also seem in the whole of this part of Cuba either. Water heated by coffee machine not good for tea in the room. Housekeeping decent but not up to best standard. The public rooms are excellent and the Atrium is spectacular, along with the sparrows giving a dawn chorus. Food was good for me, but was not universally liked. Restaurant service very good, thanks Ernesto and Ismary. Bar service and drinks pretty good. Pool not heated, I'm told the sea was warmer, alongside a stunning, well looked after beach. No problems with finding loungers anywhere on site. Lots of friendly Canadians at the hotel, and also other Europeans added to the excellent, well behaved, holiday atmosphere. I don't usually return to the same holiday, but I would happily return. Trips are mostly water based, although overnight in Havana, including Tropicana show, is well worth doing the once. Havana is a strange mix of old Spanish grandeur and crumbling poverty, with big American 1950's cars. All told, a good experience which is recommended, and you might even learn a bit about Che Guevarra and Fidel Castro whose pictures are on everything and everywhere. Read less

The evening entertainment was a much better standard than we expected & different every night.. there’s a big choice of bars & areas to chill out & the staff are all so lovely.. I hope we get to visit again sometime soon!! Tip - take your own drink container as they will happily fill them for you & tend to be bigger than the cups you get otherwise!! Read less

An all inclusive hotel. If you have had an all inclusive holiday in the Canary islands, you will find this very similar in style. We were initially allocated an amazing 10th floor room overlooking the sea and pools. However my husband found the height, together with the glass lift, too much for his vertigo and asked for a room change. We got an equally nice ground floor room and although it lacked the view, it was also really nice to be on the ground floor near to everything - it was still quiet and we looked out at the grounds. Both rooms were very spacious with good facilities. The buffet food was good, there was a good selection of vegetables and some freshly cooked food at every meal, and in general loads of options. Like all buffets, it does get a bit boring after a few days! Otherwise, we only tried the grill restaurant which is near the pool, I wouldn't recommend it. it consisted of a lot of overcooked meat, and the food was not nearly as nice as the buffet although of course had waitress service. Having said that, the staff in the buffet were very attentive and kept the drink flowing. I am sure they are all hoping for tips but I have to say they seemed to offer the same helpful and friendly service to everyone at every table. all the staff around the hotel and pools were really excellent and very helpful. the pool is large and very clean, and when we were there there was never any problem about finding a sun bed. We didn't happen to spend a lot of time at the beach itself but it was beautiful with good facilities, again lots of sun beds. There is a snack bar near the beach which serves excellent lunches. It seemed the hotel was quite full, but it did not feel crowded, there was lots of space in the bars, pools, etc. We went on a day boat trip from the hotel - it went to an Island via a dolphin show and some pelicans. I didn't swim with the dolphins which was an option, but saw a brief show and was able to get in the water with one and get a photo. I thought the dolphins were probably a bit overworked! A lot of time on the boat, with free drinks, and a pretty mediocre meal on the island, where there wasn't much to do and it seemed you had to rent something to sit down on, aside from being in the restaurants. It was quite pricey (best part 100 cucs if I remember right) and probably not worth the money in my view. all in all, really enjoyed the hotel, but I would say if you only go to Varadero, you won't really have seen Cuba, there is so much more to Cuba then this!
