Blau Varadero Hotel

Varadero, Cuba

The hotel

As if taking inspiration from the great pyramids, the designers of Blau Varadero cannily created a reclining hotel that captures as many ocean views as possible, and ensures everyone has a spacious balcony looking out over the water or gardens. By Varadero Beach, the atmosphere’s as laid back as the building, with oodles of space dedicated to relaxation and a huge lagoon pool centrepiece, with Jacuzzis, a pool bar, and a lounger and hammock-strung deck and garden. Only open to adults, all inclusive indulgence is the order of the day.

Customer Service is probably the worst ever I have come across! I am very a well traveled individual who has visited over 200 countries and hotels over 20 years! On our arrival we were greeted with the most miserable receptionist ever met called Arias, she didn’t even say hello and just for our passports, checked the hotels inventory, crossed off our names, and gave me the welcome letter from our Virgin rep. She then asked me for a holiday voucher. I showed her my booking confirmation from my mobile, but apparently this was not enough. I then showed her the hard copy. She asked again and kept asking so I got upset and asked to speak to the manager. The Manager was Mireylis who really wasn't any better at all and even she asked for a holiday voucher a few times, my conformation booking, but told me to come back at 16:30, as she needed an hour to photocopy it! I went back to reception at 4.30 to get the room key. “who are you” was the response!!, and our cases were still in reception I asked why our bags had not been taken up to the room they just looked at me, We took our cases up Things really did not get any better, our room was so shabby, and I knew then we were not given a Superior Seaview room. I spoke to other guests and they had much better room than the very SHABBY room I got! Things really didn’t get any better. The wardrobes would not open properly and keep getting stuck. I called reception and they sent maintenance guy. He showed me how to open and close the wardrobe by kicking the wardrobe doors! The bathroom did not look any better very shabby and very old tired towels On the1st night my wife and I could not sleep because we had a very noisy fridge. In the morning my wife went to reception to complain and was informed that an engineer would have a look. At 19:00 an engineer came and because of the language barrier, he asked reception staff to convey what he was saying. The receptionists told me that this was normal and to unplug it. I proceeded to unplug the fridge from wall socket and got a very bad ELECTRIC SHOCK from the plug which completely came away from the wall. And water escaped from the fridge during the night. My wife got out of bed and slipped on the water and luckily, she did not injure herself. Because of my ELECTRIC SHOCK I complained to a Roseia, the customer service manager She offered to upgrade us, and give a free massage, but in return for the upgrade Roseia asked me to sign a disclaimer letter! I said no, as it should have been done as a gesture of good will This was meant to be a relaxing break, but the customer service made it a truly awful and absolutely a bad experience!! The Spa area was dirty and the jacuzzi wasn’t working. In my 20 years of traveling this is the worst hotel I have stayed in! They are extremely unprofessional and dishonest. They charged our holiday company for a Superior Sea View room and gave us a standard sea view room. I believe the 4/5 star reviews are all fake Read less

Our room was so shabby and I know we were not given a superior seaview room as other people we met had much nicer rooms. The restaurant and bar staff are so nice so the star is for them. The food was ok but very bland. The Noisy fridge. I slipped after we were told to pull the plug at night. we did and the water leaked out Called receptionist about remote control and they put the phone down. Still was not fixed Called about safe not working and got “what do you want me to do”! Shabby room, tired towels, no hair conditioner or body lotion, and had to ask when our soap and shower gel ran out. Room not properly cleaned. The spa area was so shabby. and not a place for relaxation!! My husband got a shock from pulling fridge plug!! The food places close at 3pm. Even the fruit bar. After that you can have toastier or pizza. I ordered a tuna toastie and got a cabbage one because that’s how it comes!! No sign of even a tuna flake! Because of my husbands electric shock Roseia, the customer service manager offered us an upgrade and massage in return for signing a disclaimer letter! We stayed at the Blau from Jan 11-Jan 18 Overall our stat at the Blau was good; though, we may try another resort next time. This was our first stay in Cuba and we knew to manage expectations We are a couple in our mid 30's The facilities and beach are nice and layed out well. We had a Bay view room and it was fine. We liked being only a floor away from the wifi as sometimes we could use it from our room. Our view was nice, we could see the pool and a bit of the sea as well. Our room was fine. It s quite a humid country so I agree with some of the previous remarks about mustiness and the bathrooms showing some wear. We talked to guests of other resorts and this was similar issue. Food was as expected. I was always able to fill my plate with salads, rice, cheeses, fresh bread, fresh fruit, but my bf had some issues with the meats and seafood, while I would give the food 3.5/5 he would give it a 2. I dont think it's the Blau, I think it's just a general thing to be expected from Cuban cuisine and availability. But do try the guava ice cream! I can't say enough about the beaches in varadero, simply the best I've ever been to. Large, and perfect. The walkway and beach bar are nice too The DJ at the beach bar was really talented, one night some of his colleagues were dancing, they really got everyone into the dancing spirit. Overall entertainment at the resort was our biggest disappointment. While we enjoyed the salsa lessons on the beach, the pool was dead. It seems this resort is trying to cater to a more senior much older demographic. We could have used a few more games and engaging activities around the pool. It's fun to have interactions with other guests. Not all the guests want to sleep all day or read a book. Even an hour or two of fun games would have been great. The staff work hard and are great. It surprised us how many guests dont give gratuities. These people work hard for so many guests while you dont lift a finger on your vacation. If you show some appreciation to the staff it goes a long way. We would try another place next time, only because we are looking for somewhere a bit more lively. We are not crazy partiers, but we did feel this resort is aiming to please much older patrons. Thank you for an overall nice vacation. Read less
