Blau Varadero Hotel

Varadero, Cuba

The hotel

As if taking inspiration from the great pyramids, the designers of Blau Varadero cannily created a reclining hotel that captures as many ocean views as possible, and ensures everyone has a spacious balcony looking out over the water or gardens. By Varadero Beach, the atmosphere’s as laid back as the building, with oodles of space dedicated to relaxation and a huge lagoon pool centrepiece, with Jacuzzis, a pool bar, and a lounger and hammock-strung deck and garden. Only open to adults, all inclusive indulgence is the order of the day.

We visited Cuba for a 2 week holiday, we spent 8 nights at the Blau. We were a party of 4 young at heart friends!! And we would definitely recommend the Blau, that is to say not everything was perfect but on the whole we had a fabulous time. We arrived following a long journey by taxi from Trinidad, we were welcomed with sparkling wine and a warm smile. The rooms were ready for us, it was approximately 3pm. Our rooms numbered 645 & 647 were beautifully decorated and clean, and continued to be well looked by Lily! Although there were always problems with the coffee refills! It was a small thing. On some occasions the hall outside the room filled with smoke from people smoking in the bar, I would encourage the management to rethink the non-smoking areas in the bar, once again a small thing. The bar areas are super, a good tip is to take a thermos type cup for the outside areas, we used these for a coffee in the morning and washed out for mojitos/cubra libres in the afternoon!! The food in the main restaurant was plentiful with a reasonable choice, we were aware how difficult these things are to obtain in Cuba, therefore amazed with the food. We tried both the Italian and the international restaurant, both worthwhile giving a “go” incidentally, I emailed ahead of our visit about my friends birthday, I booked a table and a cake was organised, brilliant service. Lunch was eaten at the pool side restaurant, live music was played. The Animation team were wonderful, we all took part in something or another, morning yoga (thanks Tony) aqua fit, salsa lessons. The afternoon archery or shooting, all well organised. Patricia in particular worked very hard and had a fabulous personality, and she was not alone! The evening entertainment was a mixed bag really, things not to miss are the synchronised ballet in the pool and the circus show! The hotel also provided live music in the bar and later in the piano bar, now this was exceptional, please don’t miss!! We used the Spa a couple of times however there was a mix up with appointments and our friends were very disappointed not to be able to have the massage they booked for. The massages that were received were of good quality with lovely staff. All of these things made our stay very special. I would however like to mention the staff separately, I have never witnessed such wonderful relationships between the staff, they appeared genuinely happy to be working alongside each other. One late afternoon, a member of staff arrived for his shift at the bar, the welcome he received from his colleagues was warm, friendly and almost like family had just arrived, truly touching. We all really appreciated the hard work that went into looking after us, here are a few names that stood out for us, but honestly everyone was really wonderful. Mercedes at both the pool restaurant and evening restaurant, we went to great effort to wish each a Coma Esta!! When the music was very loud!! Orlando-waiter in restaurants Betty- our favourite smoothie maker in the mornings and pizza lady at lunch Patricia-Animation team Elijah? Hotel bar in the evenings All the afternoon bar staff in hotel! Please visit, you will have a ball!! Read less

Blau Varadero was the second part of our multi centre holiday to Cuba. The first part of our holiday was spent in Havana, on arrival at the Blau we were greeted by friendly staff and a welcome drink. The hotel is amazing, its very large with numerous bars and restaurants. Our room was over looking the gardens at the front of the hotel. This side of the hotel was very quiet, very pleasant to sit on the balcony. We ventured out from the hotel on numerous occasions, either catching the bus to go to the top of the Peninsula, visiting the harbour or travelling down to Varadero town. We also caught the train that picks up and drops off at the hotel, the driver was brilliant, although there are numerous stops along the way, if he saw you whilst walking along he would stop to pick you up. The return fare was well worth paying. Fab market in the town, where you can buy lots of keepsakes. The shops are not like any other country we have visited, they have very little stock. The hotel itself has a couple of decent shops and a pharmacy. We found it difficult to buy mosquito spray, so take plenty with you as the mosquitoes eat you alive!! The beach is absolutely beautiful, plenty of beds both within the hotel grounds, by the pool in the gardens and the same on the beach. Lovely beach bar, small one on the beach that serves rum punch and lots of other soft and alcoholic drinks and then there is the bigger beach bar that is open 24 hours a day. Such a lovely place to visit, staff are all very friendly and helpful, would have no hesitation in going back to the Blau Varadero. Big thank you to Lynette who looked after us well. There are shows on in the hotel, we particularly enjoyed the magic show. Some of the shows are in or near the pool, all well worth watching. There is a Dolphinarium near to the hotel, which has two shows a day and you also get the chance to swim with the dolphins, however apart from the show and the swimming there is nothing else there so make sure you check the times of the show before visiting. Smokers everywhere. I suggest a few non-smoking sections on beach and at the bar. The hallways were dirty and not swept for days. Yes we brought this to management’s attention but it was not followed up on. In summary I would not return. Read less

Decided on a quick vaca to Cuba to cut the winter off. The Blau seemed intriguing and it was. The whole environment was very nice, the rooms were spacious and comfortable, the staff was extremely polite and caring specially the wait staff in the various dining facilities. The beach, well, it was the Varadero, Cuba beach. Unsurpassable: Wonderful, beautiful, long, fine sand , lots of room, etc., etc., etc. So what was wrong. A few things: The room staff did not do a very good job in cleaning the rooms, specially the bathroom and did not replace soap or facecloths or shampoo without having to nearly beg the front office stasff or catch the maintenance people on the floor you stayed in. Proves to be a pain. Hotels in Cuba should make it a point to teach the staff how to clean rooms. It is more important to sweep the floor than to do pretty designs with the blankets on the bed. This is not rocket science and clients pay good money to return to cklean rooms that have replenished amenities. Other than that, the Blau is a very good hotel, good evening shows, relatively good drinks but wonderful people such as Yani in the restaurants Read less
