The hotel

Set on one of Cuba's beautiful beaches, the Paradisus Varadero is a great complex with a fantastic range of amenities. The main hotel has several restaurants to choose from, and the bars are open 24-hours a day, so there's no need to watch the clock for last orders! There are six scattered swimming pools to lounge by, and the young ones will love the activities on offer at the baby and mini-clubs, allowing you time to soak up the sun in perfect peace. When feeling active, the list of activities is almost endless - try your hand at a variety of water sports including kayaking. For pure indulgence, the spa features two hydrothermal circuits and a superb relaxation terrace with janzu pool, swimming pool and two Jacuzzis. At night, enjoy a cocktail at one of the bars overlooking the ocean, before deciding whether to head for an Italian, an International gourmet restaurant, Mexican, Fusion or Japanese for your evening meal. Heading over to The Reserve, you will find a further two more restaurants Bana and Fuego — you'll be spoilt for choice! Evening entertainment is available to suit all ages, so make sure you have yourself some night-time fun, whether you're 5 or 105!

We are a couple who stayed at the Royal Service section of the Paradisus Varadero from April 23-30. Resort was half full. For this type of vacation we are normally looking for 5* hotels offering good food and a quiet atmosphere. OVERALL: We enjoyed very much our stay at this hotel, and although it didn’t check all the boxes, it met or exceeded our main expectations. Considering it was much cheaper than other 5* hotels in Mexico or DR, we thought we had a very good value for our money. We would return at the right price. Highlights that would make us return include: - the spectacular beach, long and wide, with clear turquoise water - the beautiful quiet adults-only Royal Service (RS) pool by the ocean - exceptional and friendly service - great live cuban music in our lobby by talented musicians - Tennis lessons with their excellent and friendly tennis coach Miguel; in fact we would go back at this resort just to play again with Miguel. Aspects on which we had to make compromises include: - food in RS restaurant was reasonably good, but rarely great; no bad meal but -nothing wow. Room service was not the best; - We experienced a few minor shortages of food in the RS restaurant (no eggs one morning, no sliced bread at breakfast but only small bread rolls, no potatoes, etc) or certain types of alcool (no red or white wine on certain days; plenty of beer and good rhum-based cocktails but no gin, vodka or tequila); - The main section and Reserve were sometimes too loud to our taste, and look more like a 4* than a 5* hotel; - Our RS room was nice but had a bit of minor wear and tear. Those small defects didn’t really impact our experience, and were even expected in the circumstances, but depending on your expectations it might be otherwise. Read on for a detailed review. RESORT: the resort is clean and well maintained. We liked the layout of small bungalows spread out on a vast land. The main building is all open facing the beach and a great place for drinks, although the all-white decoration looks a bit clinical. A few buildings were in renovation but it was not noisy. It is important to understand that the resort has 3 sections that offer very different experiences, which might explain the wide range of reviews on this site: - main section had families and couples, including a good portion of local Cuban families; it feels more like a standard 4* than 5* hotel; - The Reserve is for families and at the time of our stay hosted almost exclusively local Cuban families; the atmosphere was too loud to our taste but the kids pool looked fun; - The Royal Service section is adults-only and much more upscale and quiet. It looked like it was much less affected by the shortages due to covid or the war than the other sections. BEACH: spectacular, definitively a high point of this resort. It’s like diving into a page of a Conde Nast Travel magazine. Long and wide (much wider in front of the hotel than some neighbour hotels like the Royalton) with clean powdery sand. Water was clean with endless shades of blue, green and turquoise. We could walk for hours on the beach. Lots of available chairs and shade. At times the music on the beach was too loud but you can sit away from the noise. POOLS: the main pool is very large and nice, right next to the beach, but had loud music in the afternoon. The RS pool was very beautiful, clean, quiet and next to a rocky section of the beach (a 5 min. walk to the swimmable section). Service at the RS pool was outstanding by Jorge, Camillo, Edel, and Yaneisy. FOOD: we had all our meals at the RS restaurant, next to the RS pool. It has a nice outdoor terrace for breakfast and lunch. As mentioned, food ranged from good to sometimes very good, but never wow. There was lobster every night and the steak and pasta were surprisingly good. There were not enough local Cuban dishes. SERVICE: was always great. The staff was always very professional, kind, friendly and hard working. ROYAL SERVICE OR NOT? We normally don’t pay for upgrades within a resort (if we want to pay more we’d rather just go to a nicer resort) but, in this case, if you are not travelling with kids and want a quiet atmosphere I would strongly recommend upgrading to the RS section; it will transform your experience. There were some minor advertised perks that we didn’t get nor asked for (beach bag, bathrobe, slippers, etc) but the main benefits include access to the beautiful and quiet adults-only pool and à la carte restaurants every night. The RS restaurant is apparently the best of the resort which is why we ate there every night but we should probably have tried other a la carte restaurants for a change. Our butler Yadil was very professional and helpful; he took care of booking our dinners and tennis classes with Miguel, even changing our restaurant bookings to accommodate our activities. The lobby bar had great live music every night from 19h30-21h00 with musicians we would have actually paid for to hear at our local jazz fest. The room was nice and large with minor wear and tear, and the outdoor rain shower was great. No water issues. SPORT ACTIVITIES: the gym is large and well equipped, and there were water activities on the ocean, but tennis steals the show here. The resort has 2 tennis courts and a great full-time tennis coach, Miguel, who was always available for lessons or just playing. Miguel is such a nice person and great coach, and is passionate about sharing his love for tennis. Playing with him ended up one of the highlights of our stay. The hotel provides a few rackets and balls but they were old and I suggest you bring your own. Lessons with Miguel were free but he deserved a nice tip. COVID MEASURES: best in class. All staff wore masks inside and outside, and most guests wore a mask inside. TIPPING: we never felt like we had to tip, but we usually did and it always seemed appreciated. Staff seemed to prefer to receive tips in euros, CAD or USD clean bills. They cannot use loonies or toonies at the bank, so you can either offer to change them for clean paper bills at the end of your stay or use pesos for small tips. Read less

I would have given a 5 star if this was all about the staff on this resort for they are AMAZING!!!but it is also about the resort....best beach / and sunset ever but need work on some of there restaurants and need to get some better evening activities and entertainment for people to enjoy their evening. These things can be easily fixed, you already have the best staff on the Royal side, best bartenders and butlers.....so with alittle work from Management and listening to the visitors to the resort and also staff the will be a 5 star again. It was my wife's 40th birthday and I was able to arrange a romantic dinner by the ocean side on the beach. Breathtaking view with a 4 course meal. Including a massive lobster. The experience of eating by the water and being served champagne while listening to a saxophone player behind us was amazing. Definitely enjoying our stay and will be back again in the future. Even the rooms are very modern. Read less

Where do I start? As an avid Cuba goer, and seasoned traveller, I can honestly say this is without a doubt, the best trip to Cuba I have ever experienced. The staff, the grounds, the views, the services - they have it all. Looking to do adults/couples? They have the Royal side. Looking for very family friendly, with concierge? They have the Family Reserve. Looking for a basic resort with everything you need? They have the standard side which is usually the one advertised at booking - Reserve and Royal are upgrades in the room section at booking, and boy, are they worth it. Our Concierge on the Family Reserve 4 of the 7 days was Liset, and she was such a beautiful soul, and great help. Took the time to remember our names, and our sons name, and personalize the relationship and our stay with/for us. The management is extremely kind and helpful, everyone is always looking to do more for you. Grounds keepers were kind and kept the place looking top shape. Servers, staff, and cart drivers are all extremely helpful, kind, happy and willing to help. All very informative and helpful in making trips into town for extra curricular activities, as well. One of the managers - Darien, was extremely helpful, generous and kind to our group every interaction we had - but this goes for all managers and staff in general, as well. With the Family Reserve, you get access to everything except the Royal areas (adults only). The restaurants are nice - a bit repetitive in the menu - but it is Cuba - you know what you are getting the with food, but it was still some of the best I have had in Cuba to date. Drinks were all cold, and plentiful, with great options. The Frappuccino was our go to, basically an iced cap with chocolate, with or without alcohol. Buffets were good, highly recommend the normal main side for your buffet and snack bar visits - more options, more quantity and seating, and much nicer view (overlooking the beach and ocean) - snack bar there is 24/7 with burgers, hotdogs, ham and cheese, and fries etc., Other buffet is smaller but indoor and air conditioned - often less selection and more people (smaller area) in the reserve side. 24/7 room service as well, at least on Reserve and Royal sides. Pools are plentiful and clean, also refreshing. Swim up bars, relaxing pools, swim up in rooms in the blocks on reserve side (recommend), and splash pad for the wee ones. My son loved the slides and pools. Ocean is clean, with drink service on the beach - palm trees on the beach and plenty of seating. Grounds in general are amazing, and everything is in walking distance (I am not a big walker, so this speaks volumes) - even so, there are constant carts bringing you wherever you need to go. The rooms: We stayed in the Family Reserve in Block 42 with a swim up pool, and a larger room with a king bed. This room had a microwave, tv, separate bedroom, separate bathrooms/tub room, closets, tons of storage space, a mini fridge stocked every day, and kitchenette, indoor AND outdoor private shower. 2 sliding patio doors to a large ground level patio with a table and chairs, and couch set - private cabana, and pool right infant of your door which is about 3' deep and very calm/relaxing, even with families/kids. We saw my parents room on the Royal side as well, WOW. Luxurious room, outdoor private shower, everything you need overlooking the ocean, private pool/loungers, lounge, dining etc - steps to the reserve side as well for other wants/needs. Overall, best experience I have ever had in Cuba, and we will DEFINITELY be back, this is now our go to spot. Close enough to town and other activities, old car taxis on standby at the gate, everything you could need. Change your money over at the desk (50peso/1CAN) or in town is 80peso per. Bank is 18. Tip well. To all of the staff, thank you twice over - you helped to make this the best trip ever, and deserve the 5* rating for everything from grounds, to staff, to smiles. This was also our first trip with our 2 year old, and PLENTY for the little ones of all ages. Covid safe, staff wore masks at all times - requested in enclosed indoor spaces while standing on guests as well, most guests were compliant with this. I am over the whole covid thing.. but some people aren't, and it is what it is - but everyone was respectful of rules and each other. Read less
