The hotel

The first zone is open to all – with the beautiful stretch of beach, huge pool, dive centre, spa, and delicious dining options ranging from Japanese to Tex-Mex. Its Family Concierge zone has child (and parent) friendly pools, guestrooms tailored to families, and a spot near its Amigos Club to relax. This was a very beautiful resort! I was impressed by how clean it was and how nicely laid out it was. The ocean was beautiful, and the beach was expansive, with nice clean sand. Some disappointments: The pool areas did not have enough chairs. One day many of us "borrowed" chairs from the beach restaurant. Perhaps the chairs were all at the beach but even then, we had to search hard to find a pair of chairs. The food wasn't great for the most part. I wouldn't recommend any of the restaurants. Many of the items they had on their menus weren't available. What they did serve was very small portions, and generally not appealing. We often went to the buffet after our meals. However, I was quite impressed with their buns and breads. Best place to eat was the buffet in the family concierge. The royal service breakfast was next best. Wifi is only available in the lobby, and you need to ask for a card allowing 1 hour access at a time. This was free at the royal reception desk or sold for 1 peso at the main reception. There is no internet access in the rooms. I think this is a Cuba thing though, and not specific to Paradisus. The resort was quite clean. I didn't see much garbage or cigarette butts around. The service as hit and miss. Generally the bar service wasn't as good as other resorts we've stayed at. The pool was nice. The water seemed a little colder than we'd like though. We stayed in the royal service area. The room was beautiful, with polished stone throughout. There is a nice outdoor shower on the balcony. However, the hot water would spray barely more than a trickle. There was a large hottub in the room big enough for two people. But we never used it as we couldn't get the water warm enough. The air conditioning didn't work well. Some nights it was too cold, and other nights it wouldn't work at all. We called customer service a few times to have it fixed the first night, but they didn't come until the next day, and even then the maintenance guy just fiddled with the thermostat, but never really fixed the problem He seemed quite inconvenienced by the ordeal. Overall, we had a nice, memorable vacation there. The resort could do a better job in a lot of respects, but possibly they are limited in what they can do because of the economy or government in Cuba? Read less

Sisters travelled Air Transat Options Plus from Toronto. Stayed Jan 28 to Feb 4. The entire resort is very manageable to get around walking and there are shuttles. A couple of suggestions - bring Deet bug spray, mini flashlight for evening walking (some lights along walkways are out) and a box of kleenex as they have none. I will short form this review specifically about Royal Service noting pros and cons as was our experience. Room: #14 bungalow, ground floor sea view, large with huge bathroom & outdoor shower, everything functioned well, needs a face lift (painting and refresh drapes, lamps etc - Melia improvement required) but otherwise very happy with room. Service: spot on from check in to check out, safe problem dealt with right away, outstanding service by day/afternoon butlers, entertainment/events (yoga, band players poolside & evening lobby), lobby desk service (shuttle, wifi cards, replacement room key), coffee bar in morning and after dinner drinks, poolside bar and Bellamar restaurant servers. Restaurants: breakfast & lunch at Bellamar (a la carte & small buffet very nice), dinner a la carte good; went to Japanese Sakura - more like Chinese food but fresh made, International - food ok, nice ambiance; main buffet - food ok, table service good. Misc: money exchange, nautical catamaran, night shows in main (only went to 1) easy to find and everyone is very helpful. Enjoyed vintage taxi to Varadero for lunch (Varadero 60) and walk-about. Our Royal Service vacation was perfect for us - relaxation and a few things to do at our choosing. Special thanks to: Lilier, social media & community manager, for reaching out before arrival and ensuring our comfort throughout our stay (sorry we did not get a photo, next time) Genleys housekeeping - good job All gardeners - thanks to Roberto & Davey for coconut drink and cut flowers Bellamar restaurant servers (Angel, Gabriella & others) and the chef Jorge and Janeitsy poolside bar - great drinks, service & talks Jorge and Datsy - yoga and such nice and dedicated people Yuli & Alicia - wonderful spa experience Yendi & Javier - butler service was superb (any arrangements we needed were done - bravo!) Thank you Paradisus Varadero Royal Service! Janet and Linda Read less

It was certainly a disapointing stay for numerous reasons. To begin with and most importantly, the number of old people (75+) is in the thousands. There is obviously no problem with being surrounded by a mixture of older people and younger, but in Paradisus it seems you can't get away from this demographic. Another large issue is the sheer volume of bugs in the rooms. I got to my room on the first night and instantly realized the bug issue it had. I had fallen asleep somehow to be woken with a swollen face of countless mosquito bites in the middle of the night. If u are fine with sleeping with a blanket over your face then this is the spot for you. The food is alright for breakfest but you get tired of how bland it all is for the meals. The a la carte restaraunts are nothing special. Only thing that raises this experience is the beach, it is amazing. Servers at the main bar often forget your order and won't bring it until reminded or given a tip in which they proceed to put on a facade. In conclusion, beach is great. Rooms are alright but may have a bug problem. Food is meh. Seniors (80+) Everywhere. Read less

Senior paradise is what I call this place. The resort itself is okay nothing special, not worth the 4.5 stars I would rate this hotel a maximum of 2 stars. Honest 2 stars. Food is alright missing the most important part if you come with kids. No french toast for breakfast and no french fries for lunch or dinner. The rooms are really old that need an renovation ASAP, a lot of mosquitoes and other bugs. There is no hot water in the room shower, leaking water from the ceilings in the bathroom and etc. Roofs are falling apart and the wall paint is peeling off. The family consierge is renovated and nice. The most important part for me was the beach that's why I came to Cuba. But this resort is on a "edge" and has really rocky sand which hurts a lot. You have to be really careful. We walked a bit up the beach to the next resort where there was almost no rocks. Security is really good so you feel really safe here. The lobby and the resort itself is really spacious so you dont feel cramped with people. The bartenders are really nice special shoutout to Laura in the bar for always giving us friendly service. Fish station and omelette station is really nice. There is no music in the beach or the lobby- gets very boring .. we assume it is because of the 90% population of seniors over 80 years old. I would not come here again for that price- I'd rather go to another resort. Read less
