I am currently at the end of my 1 week long stay at the Secrets Maroma Beach Resort, a highly praised resort in the Caribbean which, according to everything I read both on Tripadvisor and on other websites, is one of the best all inclusive in the country. While my stay had its highlights and was, overall, an enjoyable experience, it didn't quite live up to the extravagant reputation it boasts. One notable drawback was the resort's lack of emphasis on customer-centric service. From the bureaucratic hurdles like waiting in line for buffet seating to the stringent dress codes enforced at the restaurants, the experience felt more regimented than indulgent. Moreover, and this was something that really bothered me, was the constant influx of wedding ceremonies monopolized the resort's communal spaces, disrupting the tranquility of the pool and beach areas. Walking through the resort amid wedding festivities or witnessing ceremonies while sunbathing at the beach and being in the background of such private moments was not only awkward, but not up to the level of service the hotel aims for. In my option, the number of weddings the hotel is hosting is excessive, and you are made to feel as if the hotel is a wedding venue. Accordingly, weddings should be held far away from the guests, in order to not disturb their experience. I'd also like to note that while this resort is on a higher price point, there were some occasion where you would find guests too drunk, playing music from their own speakers at the pool, yelling… the loud and disruptive behavior from other guests, while not the fault of the resort and definitely something that was expected at this resort, detracted from the overall ambiance. Although the culinary offerings were enjoyable, they failed to reach the exceptional standard I had hoped for. However, the food at the French restaurants and the Seaside Grill Restaurant stood out as particularly enjoyable. The Privilege Beach Restaurant offered a pleasant dining experience, with attentive service and a welcoming atmosphere. On the other hand, the buffet was a dark space with limited diversity of food options, and the service was not excellent there either, being too crowded at times. On the positive side, the check-in process was remarkably smooth, and the concierge was consistently helpful throughout my stay. Whenever I needed something in my room, it was promptly available, and the staff seemed genuinely preoccupied with ensuring guests' comfort. The resort staff were exceptionally warm and attentive, elevating the overall atmosphere with their hospitality. At the restaurants, the staff made efforts to cater to guests' needs, although at times, efficiency was compromised, especially during busy periods when they were preoccupied with cleaning tables and preparing drinks. This inefficiency was more noticeable at the buffet than at the à la carte restaurants. Additionally, the resort offered excellent WiFi connectivity, and there was a vast selection of drinks available at all times. However, one inconvenience worth mentioning is the difficulty of dining outside at some à la carte restaurants, often resulting in waits or the need to dine indoors. Furthermore, the dress code for outdoor and indoor dining differed, requiring guests to change attire if not appropriately dressed for their dining area. It's important to highlight that despite the inconveniences I reported, which one might expect at a resort of this category, the staff were consistently welcoming and friendly. Additionally, the resort maintained a high standard of cleanliness, ensuring that everything was impeccably tidy and comfortable throughout my stay. In summary, while Secrets Maroma Beach Resort offers a pleasant getaway with some standout features, it ultimately falls short of delivering the opulent luxury experience promised by its reputation. The Privilege upgrade, however, is worth considering for those seeking a more personal and quiet experience. It's worth noting that while Secrets Maroma Beach Resort may meet the luxury expectations of some guests, it may fall short for those accustomed to different traveling backgrounds. Although it's not related to the hotel, I highly recommend taking a taxi or arranging a transfer to Playa del Carmen to do some shopping, take a walk, and explore the local culture. It's a vibrant area with plenty to see and do, providing a nice break from the resort atmosphere. Read less
