Let me position my review by stating, while I am a local, I have stayed at other hotels in Tobago, Caribbean and Internationally. However my expectation vs my experience at Coco Reef was horrible! I will start with the positives: somewhat friendly staff, excellent location and wonderful salt water lagoon. Negatives: I stayed with my elderly mother and wanted a deluxe ocean view room on the second floor with 2 beds, I was advised only ground floor rooms had 2 beds. A colleague who had stayed previously found this strange because a one of her previous stay had 2 beds on the second floor.🤔 The room was small, I sm of average height and standing with my hands raised I was touching the ceiling. Because the cieling was low the ac was directly blowing cold air on one of the beds. The mosquitoes were horrid...you were even given a welcome flyer telling you to keep porch doors closed because of the mosquitoes and use insect repellent...if I wanted that type of experience I would have gone on a safari! There was an island wide blackout one night however the hotel's generator was unable to power the room's ac...so imagine being in a small, stuffy room with no ac and not being able to open the porch doors because of mosquitoes! There was a lot of ants in the room (see pic). Our suspicion was they were coming from the outside as the grounds didnt seem well kept. There was not a convenient plug in for the room kettle, we actually had to place it on the ground so it could reach the nearest plug in. You may ask why I did not change rooms at this time... If there were ants in one ground floor room, there certainly will be ants in the others ( remember only ground floor rooms had 2 beds) and based on what I saw when housekeeping was cleaning the other rooms, the layout was the same. I stayed for 5 days and the breakfast menu NEVER changed, it was so bad that one morning after going to Tamara restaurant for breakfast and seeing it was the same items again, I went into the town to get something different...even though breakfast was included in my package! Also, there are a lot of birds in the restaurant which is very unsanitary. I saw birds picking at unattended food on people's plate, drinking from bowls placed under the juice canister, sitting on the edge of coffee and tea jugs left unattended. Before arriving at the hotel, I sent an email asking about complimentary ( free of charge) late checkout and received a response that it was based on availability (as with most hotels), however, the night before check out, I enquired on same at the front desk and was told that this was only extended to certain guests and based on my email correspondence, they are seeing where I asked the question but they never answered so it would not be extended to me. I do have proof of their response (and I still have it) but it was kn my phone which was in my room at the time and at that point I just wanted to leave! As someone who works in the financial industry I was also disappointed to see that upon settling my bill the input was done on the point of sale machine without me seeing and I was simply handed the machine to put in my pin number...clients must see the amount punched in on the machine, confirm same and then put in their pin. When I told them this they seemed very displeased. What was even worse, I was asked by a colleague, as a local, to send this review to the hotel first as a courtesy...guess what, it has been over a week and they have not even acknowledged receipt. There were other things that happened, but suffice it to say that I will never visit that hotel again and based on my experience, two friends have cancelled their bookings at coco reef and rebooked at other hotels in Tobago. Great location near the airport, within walking distance. Beach is more like a lagoon, walled. Little watersports other than diving and canoeing within the small lagoon only. Breakfast good. One of the managers thought they’d express their dissatisfaction at us asking for advice on nice restaurants to for dinner, saying we should stay and eat at the hotel and they “don’t understand why you want to eat outside the hotel” which I didn’t appreciate. Gym equipment is tired, as is the decor of the hotel. Read less

Im writing this review from the resort itself .its my last full day of a weeks holiday and will be sad to leave tomorrow. The hotel itself is situated very close to the airport . Its a five minute taxi ride. You do not get airport noise at all. On arrival you are greeted by a very traditional and oppulent main reception and very friendly staff. Check in was quick and easy especially nice was the glass of fruit or rum punch ... Delicious!!! We had a connecting family room on the ground floor . Deluxe ocean view category . Rooms were air-conditioned and large . Very traditional Caribbean furnishings which i really liked. Housekeeping is twice a day and great . Restaurants We ate at tamaras the evening of our arrival. Tamaras is a really great place to eat in the evening ... Gorgeous setting ,fantastic service and delicious food. I hadvthe shrimp for starters and the american beef for main. Really great portion sizes hence why i didnt manage a dessert. Tamaras is also where you have breakfast. There is alot of choice and again of good quality. Bacchanals ... Located on the beach . Serving anything from toasted sandwiches burgers, ribs, catch of the day . They are open for lunch and dinner. Cafe coco..just outside of the property. The restaurant is lovely . The food is incredible . I had beef tacos to start and surf and turf for my main . The flavours were out of this world. The coconut ice cream is to die for.again the service is fantastic. This restaurant is an absolute must! The property boasts a beautiful beach with plenty of sunbeds and shade. The sea is very calm and clear.there is also a little cove which was close to our room . Just a very relaxed and chilled out atmosphere. The swimming pool is very nice . Its a great place to watch the sunset. Whilst staying at cocoreef i have encountered impeccable service from every member of staff. Always. greeted with a smile . The general manager is a real asset . Everybody here has made us feel welcome. Coco reef tobago has exceeded my expectations and i would not hesitate to come back to this beautiful hotel again Read less

This hotel is generally good but there are areas where it is a bit tired and needs attention. The decor is now very dated. The staff and the food are lovely. There is plenty of choice of food and the breakfast particularly good. There are sometime issues with the service and the time waiting for food. On one occassion we waited over 45mins for our main course. Look at the sunbeds - they need a jolly good clean! You did get plenty of clean towels but the beds were mucky. It would have bee nice to have a cushion for the sunbeds. Also a lot of the wicker chairs at the pool restaurant were dirty on the arms and some were breaking up - needed a clean.. Our room was good to start but we had trouble with Air Con. They fixed it quickly but the same problem re-occured, also had problem with light bulbs so without us having to ask they offered to change our room to a junior suite which was great. However, I would not have wanted to pay extra for this room. The patio - once again needed a jolly good clean and the curtains were very dirty. Not a good impression. All in all the experience was not bad but there are things they need to pay more attention to. Read less
