Just checked in today, told them when I was booking room it’s my birthday. The check in staff and concierge treated us very well and welcoming. When we got to the room I was surprised by decorations on the bed, what a pleasant surprise. Great staff I feel very relaxed here.

Pros. My wife and I have just returned from a two week break at the Magdalene Grand on the 12 May 2022. This hotel is run down and requires a lot of renorvation. I have rated this as 4* because of the exceptional friendliness and service given by the staff at reception, bars and restaurants. Otherwise it would be a lot less. The concierge Marvin deserves a very special mention as he went over and above the service expected to ensure we had a good holiday. Carla in the Crusoe bar alongside the lovely Pamela and Rachel in the restaurant were also superb as were all the serving staff. Food and drinks were 1st class as were all the facilities at the hotel. Cons. 1. The Hotel beaches are totally contaminated with Sargassum seaweed and cannot be accessed. This is not a fault of the hotel as it is a wide spread International problem across the Caribbean. However the Magdalena Grand is definitely not a beach resort anymore. 2. The free shuttle service to Pigeon Point has been withdrawn. 3.The ‘Piano’ bar was Shut down and closed during our stay. 4. The room we were allocated (241) was clean and tidy but very “tired “.and the aircon didn’t work for 2 weeks, despite numerous complaints to the concierge and the front desk. The cleaner had a memory problem as we were continually left were without towels but again reception and the concierge solved the problem. Read less

178 room hotel consisting of a 2/3 storey blocks running along the Atlantic coast in the Lowlands district of Tobago. The hotel was bought by the government 12 years ago from the Hilton chain and is currently up for sale. The hotel never closed during Covid, manging to survive by pivoting to locals and people from Trinidad. All the rooms have a sea view and pleasant balcony. Best features: 1/ Golf - The hotel currently has the only golf course on Tobago and international competitions are held on it. The 18-hole 6000yd par 72 course is challenging and visually quite stunning (see attached pictures): many holes run down to the sea, with breath-taking views of the Atlantic surf; the numerous lakes (with lurking Caimans) and mangrove swamps are home to many an errant ball; and the greens are kept to a high standard. Buggies are obligatory because of the length of the holes, and the distance between some greens and the next tee. Lapwings nest in the rough, and will mob you when you get too close. Hummingbirds, red squirrels, and many other interesting birds can be seen. It is quite expensive (£150 for two people to do 9 holes including buggy, clubs and balls). 2/ Food - The hotel has 3 restaurants (2 a la carte and one buffet) and a bar with burgers and pizza. The food is at its best when serving local dishes: the delicious calf’s heel spiced stew was a first for me; Maui Maui (local fish) on the grill, pumpkin soup, bread pudding, Jalapeno pepper omelettes. It is very popular with locals for family celebrations, the evenings with singers and karaoke, and the “all you can eat” breakfasts. One of the great joys for me was watching the locals get stuck into plates of food at breakfast. We ate at a few of the best and most expensive restaurants on Tobago (Seahorse, Makuro, Jemma’s) and found the food at the hotel just as good. Comparing the Creole Shrimp (what we’d call big prawns in the UK) I’d say Jemma’s was the best, with Magdalena and Makuro equal second, and Seahorse 4th. The Chef Kyle cooked up some fantastic lamb chops. Desreen and Alysson run the lovely coffee shop that provides pastries and every variety of coffee from 10am to 6pm. 3/ Surfing – The hotel sits on a 2-mile sandy bottomed beach with good waves for the body surfer like myself (fins and hand board). Occasionally you will spot turtles as they nest on this beach. Unfortunately, during the dry season (roughly November to June) great quantities of seaweed drift onto the shore and, although the hotel employs diggers weekly, this is a thankless task as it builds up again immediately. As a result, very few guests go in the sea at this time of year. They have given up clearing the seaweed from the beach south of the hotel which makes quite a smell, and I would not recommend a room in the south wing. 4/Pool – there are 3 pools, one very large pool, a small one in the south wing, and a pool for the divers at the north end (currently closed). The main pool by the restaurants is vast, with many interconnecting sections. There is a gentle sloping access with a bar to hold onto; an “in pool bar”; and other features. Because of the seaweed situation most guests use the pool. We were told by Vinod (the General Manager) that he had just received funds to renovate the hotel, including fixing the pool filters. Kerwin, the pool boy, does a fantastic job of presenting a crystal-clear pool. The staff are all very helpful but a special mention should go to: Mikheisha the concierge who organised a round the island trip with driver Michelle, and Wendell who often ferried us to the golf course was a mine of information on the flora and fauna (he was very happy to take detours to show us some special bird or crab). Nigel was a constant help, and seemed to work everywhere. Our room (340) in the north wing was perfect, on the same level and close to the bar and reception, with great views of the sea and dawn from the 3rd floor. Read less

I really enjoyed my time at this hotel and would have given it a 5 star review if it wasn’t for the following issues. The hotel advertises that the rooms and resort areas offer wi-fi. Well, the wi-fi is spotty at best and I spent a lot of my time trying to find an area that had the best signal. I felt the rooms were nice, but could use a little renovation. The bed was comfortable and I loved the pillows. Having to use 2 remote controls to work the tv was a little weird, I also had a nest of mosquitos that took over my bathroom and came out at night to attack us. The girls at the front desk were very nice and extremely helpful. The breakfast waitresses were very friendly and attentive. There was also a gift shop in the lobby that sold the cutest custom gift sets. I purchased a gift set that included a candle, body products and beverage. I didn’t want it for a gift, but used most of it while I was there for a romantic evening. The young lady in the shop, Mrs Marin was so helpful and friendly. It was pretty upscale for a lobby store. The breakfast buffet was standard and I thought the evening buffet price was too expensive. However, but the pizza we ordered one night was absolutely delicious and made to my specifications. There was an evening show with 3 lovely ladies performing. They we very good and engaged the crowd really well. All and all, it was a good visit and I will return. Just fix the wi-fi, jazz up the rooms a little, and spray the rooms for mosquitoes and you’ll be just fine. Read less
