In the evenings the hotel staff didn’t even put the lights on round by the pool and bar area we found this very disturbing as we were still on holiday even though we felt like we were in prison, the reviews that are on here take note of as this hotel has 0 customer service. Just back from here 24th March but had been here a year and a half ago and was really shocked and horrified to find how much this place has declined. We would never have booked if we had known . All the recent reviews are true and sum up how awful the place is so i will recap only. THE TRUTHFUL NEGATIVES - not an exhaustive list. 1. The food - shocking, inedible, got worse by the day. Bland , same thing every night, white salmon ??? in various conjealed sauces, luke warm, sat around for hours and dangerous. The only hot food was the soup. 2. Service - chaos , nobody in charge. Disorganised , waitresses running around like headless chickens. No service, wait ages for drinks, no clean cups at all at breakfast. Slow at lunch . Perhaps a deliberate strategy to give you as little alcohol as possible. 3.Staff - demoralised and unenthusiastic. Mind you, they probably hate the place as much as the guests. I can name now a few exceptions, as they were few and far between. The Omelette Lady - a smile and a wave every morning. Thankyou ! you were the only one. Derek - Bar Man - a nice chap and very professional. The young ladies that did breakfast and lunch . Vanessa - a hard worker. The rest of them particularly reception - unhelpful sulky faced madams. 4 - The beach - tiny with exactly 6 filthy sunbeds. Didn't get a lot of sun. No swimming as it's rocky and rough waves. Nearest public beach is store bay 10-15 mins walk, 5- The rooms - ok , rather dated, some of them in dire need of a deep clean and renovations. Deluxe rooms on top floor extremely noisy due to aircraft noise. There is nothing between you and the runway. 6- Pools - large pool ok - small pool ( 8ft deep) is in a real bad condition. The ladder is broken and taped off and the surface is off the floor- it is dangerous and in dire need of refurbishment. 7- Management - far and away the biggest problem is the lack of management. I heard they have been though 3 or 4 incompetent general managers in as many months and a few chefs too. They all leave..... too many problems..... And all that was BEFORE the covid crisis kicked in . Week 2 of our holiday they shut down the bar completely and served all food out of polystyrene boxes. The food being so inedible that many people fed it to the stray dogs that roamed the grounds. We , like many others ,had to go out and buy takeaway food for dinner otherwise we would have starved. The manager would not allow any booze but said we ccould go to the supermarket and buy some ! We were completely fleeced out of nearly a week of our all inclusive package. This was not a government stipulation. Other hotels in the area managed to still provide decent food and drinks during the crisis but this manager decided to shaft us all to save a few £. The manager disappeared next day - sacked we heard. POSITIVES. Let me think …….. oh the gardens were nice. That's it. there are snakes here which upset some people however it is the tropics and there is a lot of foliage for them to nest in, This may be a budget hotel but it should still meet a decent standard for food etc. When the world re-opens for holidays please please spend your hard earned cash somehere else ! We stayed at this hotel from the 11th to the 22nd of March 2020 and can confirm what others have stated in earlier reviews to be true. I would like to be able to give back some positive feedback but apart from the lovely Omelette lady and a couple of the younger staff there is nothing more than can be said about the Tropikist Hotel. Food in the evening was inedible and I had to go without most evening as I could not eat it. When the hotel went into what was supposed to be lock down food had to be fetched from the restaurant with long queues (so much for isolation) and served up in box with only a small plastic fork to eat it, there was NO knife, NO spoon so you got 3 courses - soup, main meal and ice cream with only the same minute fork to eat all 3. Likewise at breakfast - has anyone tried buttering toast with a fork? A pack of dogs entered the hotel most evening looking for scraps of food because we could not enter the restaurant and some people choose to eat out on their balcony rather than sit on their beds. Our room was a disgrace, I have noticed other peoples comments say that the housekeepers done a good job in their rooms that was not the case in room 44. The bathroom shower and taps and floor tiles where filthy and had never been buffed up or had any type of descaler used on them. The unit to put your clothes in was painted with some sort of sticky brown paint so everything stuck to it, on one side neither a draw or cupboard would open at all. We had isolated ourselves for 9 days when the hotel decided to let in foreign nationals who had come in via Trinidad where there was suspected cases of the virus. No segregation was placed on them and they continued to use the swimming pool and congregate in a large party to eat. The Manager of the hotel was as useful as a chocolate teapot he informed us by memo that there was two planes leaving and that ALL guests had to be on them despite the fact they where destined for German and that no other planes would be available for us to be repatriated. This was NOT the case. Further memo's eventually arrived with yet further misleading information which sent guest into further panic. Each guest had to contact the UK to find out what was the actual truth and at their own expense. The High Commission in Trinidad was appalled at how we where being treated. One of the memo's stated that soft drinks would be sent to our rooms this did NOT happen there was only a water filtration, tea and coffee with NO milk after a confrontation with the manager the following morning soft drinks appeared in large bottles which everyone had to handle (so much for not handling things other people had to touch). The manager once again lied to us saying he was making phone calls and he would let us all know the all facts instead he done a runner never to been seen again. After an incident involving dinner we asked who was in charge only to be told by the chef who had been drafted in that he guessed it was him. Hand sanitizer at the hotel ran out, no deep cleaning occurred and hardly and tops where cleaned down on a regular basis. To make matters worse for anyone with a phobia a large green snake came out from under a large shrub where people where sunbathing and they where also seen at the side of the bar area near the sauna. Would I recommend this hotel to anyone!! Most certainly NOT we would not return to this hotel even if was going free. As for Health and Safety issues - don't even get me started. We have traveled the World have been to every Continent and I can honestly say this experience has been our worst. Read less

We're staying in the hotel now (March 20th 2020). If we could, we'd go home now and not stay the remaining 5 days of our holiday. I'd leave all our luggage and walk to the airport so desperate are we to leave. We, like many others, booked and paid for 'all inclusive' but we're not getting it. The management has closed the bar because of Tobago government warnings about the covid virus. As a result, the hotel is now DRY. No alcohol is available, nor are the soft drinks usually served by the bar. There is no hand sanitiser anywhere for us to use. The Government request is that bars and restaurants close to avoid congregations of people. They're still open and serving customers but on a takeaway basis. Shops are still open. The management here are providing food which we collect and take to our rooms, but will not provide any alcohol. Why takeaway food but not takeaway drink? Several people have asked the Manager directly why we can't have the drink that we've paid for. I asked him twice and the only answer I got was the government request, but he didn't have an answer when I pointed out that there was no restriction whatsoever on drinking alcohol, selling it, or giving it away, and he could if he wanted give us, or allow us to collect alcohol to drink in our room. All I got was attempts to distract, muddy the waters and avoid the issue. Oh, but we were told we could go to the shop up the road, buy beer/drinks and bring it back to our room! We pointed out that we had already bought the drinks and were willing to take it to our rooms but HE was denying us access to it. Again, the response was evasive. The hotel is ripping us off by not providing the all inclusive accommodation we paid for and is simply profiteering. It shouldn't really be a surprise though, what kind of integrity can you expect from a management that advertises fee spa treatment with each booking when it does not have a spa and cannot provide a spa treatment? On other matters, the food has got steadily worse. Every night has seen the same fish - 'white salmon', boney chicken and either beef or fatty lamb/pork. We've eaten out twice already because some of the food has been inedible. I'm not a fussy eater I was brought up to either eat what was put in front of me by mum or go hungry, and army service taught me to eat what was available when it was available, but I've struggled to eat the food here, and several nights I've left the table hungry because the food was just terrible. I can't eat lumps of pork fat regardless of what sauce its covered in. The service is poor from the more mature staff, although some of the young ones are nice. The rooms are dated and not in good condition. The same with the rest of the hotel. The manager has made a point of staying out of sight and refusing talk to us. That disrespect and the fact we're being ripped off is obviously causing tension and irritation. The food we're getting now is so bad that people are not eating it. Last night several took it to reception whilst others made a point of feeding it to the stray dogs thar are now hanging round. Someone else simply through theirs out the window. To all those that give this dump 5 stars I sincerely wonder how they could possibly rate it that high. What were they taking to be so delusional or what hovels have they stayed in to think this is so good? They're obviously very easily pleased. This was never a 3 star place, even by overseas standards, maybe 2,but the attitude and disrespect from management drives it firmly in the negative. If I could give a zero tripadvisor rating I would. The poor facilities are one reason to avoid this place, the bad food another, but being treated like mugs by management is the strongest. DO NOT COME HERE Read less
