Paradise Cove

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Nestled in beautiful tropical gardens, Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel is a gorgeous adults-only boutique hotel, offering guests a secluded retreat from the world. Aptly named, it really is paradise here with a pristine white beach and exceptional views of the lagoon and the northern islands from the peninsula. Highly romantic, the resort even offers ‘love nest’ twin sun beds. Also recommended is a visit to Spa Cinq Mondes. Not only does it boast a pool, hammam and flower baths, you can treat yourself to an Indian Ayurvedic massage — sure to banish any lingering cares! At the Paradise Cove, water sports are very much the order of the day, from snorkelling to water-skiing. Come dusk, S.T.A.Y bar is the place to sip on tropical cocktails whilst admiring the sunset. There’s live and unplugged music here too but first enjoy dinner at a choice of restaurants. For local dishes, the Dining Room is ideal or experience Asian fusion cuisine at XO. For a real treat, book a table at The Cove — highly romantic, tables for two are set in small huts, right on the beach, beside a coconut grove.

First time visiting Mauritius and we stayed in Paradise Cove for 9 nights. We opted for half board, rather than all inclusive, which was a choice that worked out well for us. Depending on how much you eat during the day and what you like to drink will determine what is the best option for you. We don’t often eat lunch on holiday as we find two meals is enough, and only occasionally drink during the day. We always have a bottle of wine (sometimes two) + drinks/cocktails at dinner and for us half board worked out significantly cheaper and gave us a wider selection of wines in the evening. There are three restaurants on site - one main dining room that alternates between buffet and a la carte during the week, one sushi restaurant described as asian fusion (XO) and one modern tapas style restaurant (Peninsula). The latter two must be reserved in advance and have a fixed menu but well worth visits. Our favourite was XO; if you like sushi it is not to be missed. For us Paradise Cove left us with mixed feelings, best summarised as follows: Pros Arrivals and departures lounge - brilliant idea and provides a great first impression of the resort. The lounge offers a private, secure space for guests with bathroom and shower facilities when you arrive and leave and don’t have access to your room. Rooms - newly decorated, stylish interiors, spacious and all have a breathtaking view of The Cove. Very clean, house-keeping staff were very considerate and shower and beach towels were replaced daily. Swimming pools - 2 sunbathing infinity pools and 1 lap pool. Also worth noting that there is a private beach which is The Cove with sea access. During our stay there was never an issue finding a sun bed, in fact we enjoyed moving around depending on time of day and where the sun was. Spa - reasonably priced treatments, wide offering, private setting and nice surroundings. Make sure to book treatments in advance. Therapists were all friendly and provided quality treatments. Water sports - glass bottom boat, water ski-ing, stand up paddle board and more all included and provide great entertainment on beautiful waters. Guys at The Boathouse were all friendly and inviting, and happy to share tips on the activities. Staff - without a doubt, the staffs dedication to service is incredible. One standout member of staff for us was John. After one meeting, John remembered our names, drinks, room number and looked after us from that point. In addition, it is worth mentioning Tulsi who, along with John, seemed to always be keeping everything running extra smooth, Nitesh who took great pride in running Restaurant XO, and we can’t forget Anita who made us eggs every morning and Heemo serving up the best pancakes. Cons Bottled water - the amount of single use plastic used in this resort is completely unacceptable. Single use plastic water bottles are handed out to all guests, all day, including on the tables at dinner. Annoyed that we didn’t bring our reusable bottles from home, we resorted to retaining the bottles we received on the first day and left feeling embarrassed sneaking to the gym to refill them in the only water fountain in the resort. Another guest described a nearby island covered in empty plastic bottles so the impact of single use plastic on the environment is clearly an issue close to home in Mauritius. For a hotel that prides itself on its environment credentials, documented at the reception, this seems to be a glaring oversight. Communication - on arrival you are handed an information sheet that is not completely accurate. It states that the gym is open till 10.30pm (so does the hotel website) but in reality it closes at 8.30pm. The sheet details the evenings that XO and Peninsula are closed, yet they were open and we ate in the restaurants on those nights. Information on what the dining format or the entertainment is in the main Dining Room each night is also not easily shared, we had to go to reception and ask if it was a la carte or buffet. We can say from experience that it is a one week cycle on repeat so bare this in mind if staying for longer. Taxis - the hotel has pre-negotiated fixed prices with a local taxi. These rates do not seem to bare any relationship to distance travelled and seem to penalise short journeys over long journeys. To give an example, a return journey to Calodyne, less than 2 miles down the road, was 900 rupees compared to a 40 mile journey to the airport which was 2600 rupees. The hotel is making it too expensive to explore the local area in the evening which leaves a sour impression (ironically during the day you can use the free bikes and get to the next towns in 10 mins, unfortunately not safe to do so at night). All in all, we had a fantastic time in Mauritius. However, our stay at Paradise Cove was somewhat let down by a few small things that are easily fixed. Read less

The food was world class - would compete with any Michelin Star restaurant and beautifully presented. The spa was gorgeous and the couples massage was by far the best we have ever had. What really made the holiday for us though was the staff. Everyone without exception went out of their way to make our trip truly memorable. Always smiling, nothing was too much trouble and I have to make a special mention to Sam the food and beverage manager who was brilliant, Deepak who was so lovely and looked after us and was always smiling and Amish who was attentive and unassuming. This hotel is faultless and we cannot wait to return. Read less

Stay Oct 2019 After losing our Honeymoon with the Thomas Cook collapse and having not had a holiday for five years, we found the staff at Paradise Cove quick to respond to emails and rebooked our stay directly with them. For those who don’t want to read a lengthy review. This is a beautiful resort with amazing hospitality. There is plenty to eat and do and to us, was pure luxury. An amazing honeymoon destination where all staff spoke both English and French. From the airport the travelling time via taxi was approximately an hour. Arrival: We knew we had chosen the right place from the moment we arrived. We were met by the lovely Daniella at the entrance who insisted our bags would be taken care of and we need not worry. We were some hours early and were offered the use of the arrival/departure lounge where there are small individual electronic access rooms containing a shower, toilet , sink and a place to get changed. Actually we were checked in a few hours before actual check in time and had our room made available to us. Daniella provided us with a cold refreshing drink. Right from arrival the premium all inclusive was available to us. Daniella showed us where everything was and genuinely couldn’t be more helpful. Our room was spacious and comfortable. All drinks in the mini bar were free , only the snacks in them cost extra. (refilled daily and charged to your room at the end) The bed was large and comfortable, there are sliding doors onto a decked area with outside seating. A large double shower in the room, a tv and plenty of storage space including a safe. Our room was always kept clean and the housekeeping staff were fab. Towels were always replaced and fresh beach towels every evening ready for the following day aswell as water placed by our bed. Food on site: Breakfast was wide ranging, there was something for everyone at the chef supervised buffet and attentive waiting staff at the main dining room. The STAY BAR is open for the majority of the day and serves drinks and snacks through most of the day. This includes club sandwich, burgers, wraps etc. The staff here are great. As part of our honeymoon package we made a cocktail under the supervision of Ricky. Right next to the stay bar is the main resort beach and the infinity pool. The staff will take the time to walk to those on sun beds around the infinity pool and beach to offer drinks. The main dining room offers a decent menu for dinner, and there is often entertainment in the form of dancers or live musicians. We had the traditional sega dance one evening. An Indian themed night where the live music was two gents playing a sitar and drum. This is brilliant whilst sat eating your dinner. XO RESTAURANT We reserved this for one night. It is a Japanese inspired restaurant where the menu is largely sea food/sushi. There are vegetable and chicken options on the menu. This is a restaurant on stilts looking over the resort. Those views with coupled with the food and fine drinks are an incredible experience. PENINSULAR RESTURANT This is the furthest restaurant that takes less than five minutes to walk from anywhere in the resort and is where a comprehensive lunch menu. The dinner menu is exceptional here as was the wine pairing dinner which I wholly recommend. Right next to this is a bar and infinity pool and rest area. This bar is massively underused where most flock to the stay bar for the day. The chefs and staff clearly care about service, and they , as with all staff, are a credit to the resort. There is a gym and tennis court on site (we didn’t use these, I haven’t used one in years) A water sports facility which can be booked with reception or directly with the boat house. We watched others taking part in wakeboarding , use of a pedalo, stand up paddle boards and kayaks. This is where the catamaran trip will also go from should you book it. SPA As part of our package we were entitled to a free 20 minute shoulder and neck massage, we also booked in for a longer massage later in our stay. The massage itself was really really good. There was a couple of let downs with this massage. The room has a wall that is open to outside, athough still enclosed, There was a stale water smell which disappeared after a short time there and the person providing my massage, whilst exceptional massage, had a cold. She had to keep stopping to blow her nose and was constantly sniffing throughout the massage. My wife was in the same room having her massage and had no issues at all with hers. I didn’t raise it at the time and whilst I could have done, didn’t see it as essential. Someone was unwell. I’m over it, I include it for balance. There is a sunbed rule which means you cant leave your towel on the sunbeds all day. many still do, particular around both main pools, but there is usually still sun beds around. We also paid approximately 116GBP to go on the day catamaran trip with a large group. (we cancelled the sunset cruise as this was 250GBP and was just the two of us with staff) There were a couple of errors of communication around these trips, both booked with reception. The first was the day trip, we weren’t on the list upon our arrival, but the staff agreed to take us, despite only booking it the previous day. For the evening one, it doesn’t seem the message of cancellation got through. We heard the staff at the bar talking about that no message had been passed about the cancellation and the catamaran staff had brought the catamaran round to set it up. In conclusion – This place is an incredible experience, we didn’t do everything we could have. The fantastic staff make this place what it is, coupled with beautiful views, but absolutely key are the staff, right from room service, to the waiters/waitresses,bar staff and reception. Our honeymoon was a dream and one we will remember for many years to come. I sincerely hope that we can revisit on an anniversary in years to come. Thank you to all the staff. If you are staff and reading this, genuinely, thank you. There are plenty of details I have missed, , there just isn't the time to write. Enjoy it if you get the opportunity Read less

We have just returned from our stay at Paradise Cove and can happily say that it lived up to its name. From the moment we arrived we experieced friendly staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. The room was spacious and well appointed (we opted for a room on the top floor which afforded superb views of the cove) with a clever eye for interiors. The layout of the hotel is also very cleverly done. Although it was busy throughout it never seemed so, a good choice of restaurants and lots of secluded areas to find a Love Nest of your own (a 2 person cabana) meant it was truly idyllic. We also made the most of the activities which included a variety of water sports, tennis, spa etc, all of the highest standard. I would heartily recommend the All Inclusive package as good value and as there is nowhere else to go the alternative is starving at lunch. My only criticism is that information on what activities are on at what time and what is on offer each evening from the restaurants is a little difficult to find, so would recommend time spent in recce on arrival.
