TripAdvisor Traveller Rating:
I recently got married at Secrets Maroma and was very pleased with the experience. This was my second visit to Secrets Maroma and this review is directed entirely toward the “Destination Wedding... Read more Experience†rather than the resort experience as a whole, as I’ve already reviewed that following my previous visit. I made contact with wedding coordinator Cecilia Reyes early on, in the wedding planning, and booked my wedding date one year in advance. I know there are two wedding planners but I never had any direct contact with anyone other than Cecilia. We planned a three-night extravaganza and had a total of 85 guests that joined us at the resort. Some came for a few days before the wedding, some stayed after, and some came only for a few nights. Cecilia accommodated us in booking three separate events: “Cocktail Hour†night one, “Pig Roast†night two and “Wedding†night three. All three events were a great success. I will also add to this review that I’m an extremely demanding, and a high maintenance individual, and I would be the first to criticize if something went wrong. Cecilia detected this in me early on, and went out of her way to make sure that I was more than satisfied. (I kept telling her throughout the experience, that I would never want her job- having to deal with stressed out brides!) My only complaint regarding the entire experience was the slight to moderate delays that I experienced regarding contact with Cecilia during the earlier months of planning. It was 5-6 months before the wedding, and I had lots of questions that I needed answers for, and there were a few times when I was unable to reach Cecilia or make contact for more than a week. Thankfully as we got closer to the wedding date, Cecilia was EXTREMELY responsive, and emailed me back within 12-24 hours (in the month leading up to the wedding). I attribute the earlier delays in response time to her dealing with other weddings. I was surprised by HOW MANY WEDDINGS this resort does. Almost every day we were there it seemed there was a wedding, sometimes even more than one per day, small and large. HAIR AND MAKEUP: I did a trial a few days before the wedding at the spa. The girl who did my hair and makeup did a spectacular job. The spa recommended that I bring my own eyelashes, which I did, and I could not have been happier with the overall result. (I have had hair/makeup done in the US before at fancy salons and spent more money, and been greatly displeased). FLOWERS: There is an outside decoration/flower company that services the weddings. It was kind of confusing to me, and I needed to pay this company separately from the resort. They asked that I wire money to them, which annoyed me that I couldn’t pay on a credit card, however Cecilia bypassed this problem and paid them directly (while I paid her and the resort with my credit card). The first estimate they gave me for flowers was $16,000!!!! I WAS HORRIFIED. Many emails back and forth, I finally negotiated them down to $2000 for flowers for the wedding. This included a few bouquets (my sister and myself), and boutonnieres, corsages for the wedding party, family, etc…. This also included table arrangements, and some floral decorations at the altar. I have no idea where the original estimate came from, but it was upsetting. I know “wedding flowers†are expensive in general, and I have to say, I feel that the esthetic outcome of the flowers delivered were very beautiful and the guests seemed to enjoy them. DJ’s/SOUND SYSTEM: I found the price of the sound system rental to be somewhat expensive. $250/hour for microphone and speakers. We brought an ipod with all of the music we wanted to listen to. The quality of the microphone and speakers was very good, and even though it was expensive, it certainly was very functional and high quality. We had a DJ the night of the wedding (additional $$) and he did a great job. I pre-selected all of the music I wanted to be played, but he did a good job organizing and sequencing the correct songs at the correct times. VENUE: The wedding was on the beach itself, the cocktail hour was in the “Barracuda Garden†and the reception was on the pool deck between the pools (infinity and bar-pool) and overlooking the ocean. The views were breathtaking, and definitely one of the prettiest wedding settings I’ve ever attended. SERVICE: Like the rest of the resort, I found the service to be over the top, amazing. All wedding personnel went out of their way to accommodate us. One of my cousins who suffers from diabetes had his glucose monitor break. Someone from the resort actually drove into town and purchased one at the pharmacy for him! FOOD: My husband is very picky and demanding when it comes to food. For this reason, we subjected the resort to MULTIPLE food tastings during our preliminary wedding visit several months prior. At that time, he expressed his multiple demands, and the resort delivered. He let the resort know that they were NOT to overcook the Filet Mignon, and that he would prefer that it be served rare to having the steaks overcooked. Unfortunately, many of the guests were served their steaks “Moo-ing†in the words of my father. I don’t blame the resort for this, I blame my husband, as this is the way he would prefer his steak. Unfortunately most people feel differently than him in this department and you can’t please everyone! The Portobello cream soup was amazing and “orgasmic†according to one guest, and the cake was just so-so. I kind of wish they had a few different options for cakes, they only offered us Vanilla, Tres Leches and Cheesecake. OVERALL: I could not have been happier. The resort and Cecilia in particular were more than accommodating in meeting my every demand. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this as a wedding venue to anyone in the future. If we were to do it all over again we would not have changed a thing, and I sincerely thank Cecilia for her patience with us both throughout the entire process. Read less

We stayed in one of their premium beachfront rooms, building 17, from Nov 8-11/15. While they provide a lot of frills and niceties, they fell down terribly on basics such as hot water. We had to... Read more run the hot water interminably from 4 different taps until after 15 minutes or so of wasted water, we finally got water warm enough to shower. But, surprise ! turn off the water for a minute while you soap down and the hot water is gone again for another 10 minutes. Not one day. The whole 3 days we were there. There is a split level concrete and tile floor requiring navigating a rough edge step up or down. This step is inadequately marked, adds nothing to esthetic or architectural merit, especially given the modest size floor area of the room, but represents a major fall hazard. My partner seriously bruised her little toe on this step and I nearly took a fall onto a tile floor while trying to take a step back in narrow confines. Some family of our's staying in a nearby room also tripped and nearly fell. The upside: If you live there long enough, you'll remember where the step is even in the dark :(( When we tried to watch TV, the sound did NOT come out of the TV but out of a bathroom overhead loudspeaker at a volume level of 50++ . It would not respond to the volume control provided. Loud enough to wake up half the building. Go figure ! The water situation was finally addressed after three days of expressing our concern, just in time to check out. At $800.00 ++ a night for a premium room and location, I expect better. The Wifi signal was spotty and weak. No compensation was offered other than a late check out privilege of another 3 or 4 hours to find alternate accommodation elsewhere. The entertainment and activities schedule is good. The staff attitude is so so. Could be friendlier, especially the waiters. I did not detect a good esprit de corps or positive staff morale. The service at Secrets Maroma was absolutely everything I would expect from a 5-Star resort. They have mastered the art of "surprise and delight" and obviously have an excellent service culture... Read more environment for their team members because all of them surpassed my expectations. Thalia and her partner in crime in the Entertainment team (I think Emilia?) - Were so awesome with the activities - from Archery to miniature golf. Their energy and enthusiasm helped make our experience more enjoyable. We also had a lot of contact with the cocktail servers in the lobby bar, the bar tender at the beach bar, the bar tender at Sugar Reef and all of the fabulous breakfast wait staff. All if them were awesome! The spa ladies went above and beyond to accommodate our last minute spa request which was much appreciated on our rainy last night. Every person on the staff, every one spoke to us -- they were all friendly and being in the Hotel Industry I know you just can't teach this kind of friendliness. Everyone went out of their way to accommodate and make us feel welcome and help us have fun. There is something to do here for everyone and the nice thing about it is that you can party it up or you can be in a nice quiet private area and things are spread out so that you won't be disturbed if you want to be in a quiet area but there are plenty of parties to go to and have if you wan to as well. I loved the board games in the lobby bar. To be honest some of my favorite times were had with my sweetie playing Monopoly listening to music and drinking Margaritas - but that's me. Read less
