The hotel

This Polynesian-themed resort, Sofitel Dubai The Palm is a luxurious, sumptuous accommodation complemented by a range of world-class facilities, including first port of call, the SoSPA, to take advantage of the many treatments designed to get you in the holiday mood! There is also a great choice of fabulous swimming pools to choose from or grab a towel and claim your space on the hotel’s own private stretch of beach. At the beach, indulge in myriad water sports or simply soak up the sun whilst getting stuck into a good book – pure bliss! There are plenty of accommodation options but whatever you decide upon, all boast their own private balcony, the perfect place we think to enjoy a spot of breakfast or a cocktail at sundown. There were a number of things that didn’t quite live up to expectations but the service received by Narayan was not one of them. Setting was great and views spectacular but mostly a 4+ star & not quite 5 star.

However the staff are incredible . They are kind, patient and very friendly. They smiled despite the immense pressure on them. The concierge desk were amazing - super competent and helpful. Too many too name. But thank you for taking care of us! The staff are a credit to this hotel. The service issues are in the control of management. Read less

I came here on a friends recommendation, pre-covid. Her kids are the same age as mine and loved how many activities were on offer eg waterpolo, archery etc. Unfortunately we found this not to be the case and having been to Dubai 4 times now I don’t think there is anything that sets this hotel apart. The hotel is nice, but nothing special - it has its good points but definitely has bad points. We are currently on our 5th night of a 9 night stay here. Pros - [ ] Reception area lovely and everyone so helpful - [ ] Food in restaurants is fantastic, but be sure to book your table well in advance or you won’t get one! - [ ] The majority of staff go above and beyond to help eg The lifeguard, towel guy and bar tender at the ‘waterfall’ pool are just exceptional. They never stop all day and always with a smile. Mass in The World Eatery is great too, very helpful! - [ ] The rooms are fantastic, we are staying in a 1 bed apartment, excellent facilities, everything is so clean and views great! Housekeeping are great! Cons - [ ] They don’t have enough bar staff, especially around the beach area and this can be very frustrating. Our first day we went for some lunch and drinks by the pool bar kiosk, they have sangria advertised on big boards everywhere, so I ordered sangria. 40mins later my families drinks and food had arrived yet not a drink for me. I asked about this (directly at the bar as no staff around) to be told the sangria had to come from another bar!! I explained that had I known this I would have happily ordered something else, and suggested they explain this to people in future seeing how many big adverts there are for it. - [ ] Service at the other bars is also terrible, restaurants are great but bars terrible. We often sit outside Porterhouse bar before dinner and find the service to be painfully slow! Likewise Maui bar for happy hour, I had to order a wine 3 times before it arrived, I could see it sat on the bar! This isn’t a complaint about the staff because they all work so hard, there simply isn’t enough of them! - [ ] The call buttons on the sun loungers don’t work, ever! They say they are temperamental but I spoke to a few people about this and they either don’t work or they don’t have enough staff and ignore them, feels like the latter. I wasn’t expecting the buttons so this service doesn’t bother me, but the fact they still advertise that they work does! - [ ] Kids club, kids have to wear masks and no outdoor activities. My kids (9 and 6) went for an hour and hated kids club! We only booked this hotel on the assumption they had family activities such as waterpolo. They blame covid restrictions for being unable to do outdoor activities, but I don’t think that’s the case because restrictions were lifted. - [ ] The giant sea inflatable obstacle course isn’t on, another reason we chose this hotel was this feature. Apparently it’s too hot for it, which I understand, but surely don’t advertise it so boldly if it’s only available 1/2 the year? - [ ] Sunbeds! I woke up (jetlagged) at 6.30am the first 2 days, by 7am I went to relax by the pool only to find not a single free sun bed on the ‘front row’ around the pool!! Most were men sat guarding the sun loungers waiting for the pool towel cabana to open so they could towel beds for their family. I spoke to a few people who were also frustrated by this, most ended up at the beach each day and others (like us) used the waterfall pool instead. TOP TIP - the waterfall pool opens at 9am so no need to get up at 6am for a bed!! - [ ] Taxis - we have used 2 taxis so far (shopping mall and water park). Both times I asked consierge in advance, to book us a local taxi for a specific time. They were happy to do this, wrote our room number down and said no problem. However when we arrived for our taxi we were told on both occasions that we have 2 choices: they can call a taxi and we wait 5/10mins, or we can take the hotel taxi (at twice the price). I don’t understand why they couldn’t have either explained this to us when booking, or ordered us a taxi as requested. Again, very frustrating! So far a nice, but very frustrating stay. We won’t be returning. Read less
