I am a Disney regular, having worked in the park previously, but this was my first time staying at the Grand Californian because I was in town for a work conference at the resort. I was definitely disappointed by the whole experience. When I first checked in, I was given a room on the first floor at the corner of the hotel, and it was dark and very small. It felt similar to a motel room. I called guest services to ask if there was any way I could switch rooms, and luckily, I was able to be moved to a much bigger and nicer room. During my stay, I ordered room service a few times, but for some reason, my room service trays and plates were never taken out when housekeeping would come (I was not present when housekeeping would be in my room). I called down to the front desk to ask if I could get the trays and plates removed 3 different times, and no one ever came. I had to leave the trays and plates outside of my room in the hallway because the clutter and smell was just starting to be too much, so I called the front desk AGAIN to let them know so they could pick them up. The trays stayed outside of the room, in the hallway, until the morning I checked out. WTF? Besides that, everything else was okay. I had stayed at the Disneyland Hotel for a night before this, and that was worlds better than the Grand Californian. Much bigger and nicer room, and it really gave you the Disney feel, which was also something that was missing at the Grand Californian. As soon as I checked in to the Grand Californian, I immediately regretted my decision to leave the Disneyland Hotel. I would definitely recommend for everyone to save their money and stay at the Disneyland Hotel instead. Read less

My husband and I have stayed at this hotel before and everything has been decent prior. However, this time around was a NIGHTMARE. From the second we got to the hotel there were problems. A little back story, our socal passes were expiring at the end of may and there were no reservations available to use up our last day on the ticket. In order to explore more options for us, I spent HOURS on hold/speaking with multiple hotel reps and Disneyland customer service reps. I wanted to know what options we had available to us since we couldn't use the last day on our ticket. Amongst upgrading to annual passes, they also advised me that if we stayed at one of the Disneyland hotels we could be accommodated with reservations for the days we would be staying. After more calls to the hotel to ensure if we booked we would be able to attend the parks as advised, they ensured once we physically got there they would make it happen. So we booked 1 night. Once we got there, we went to guest services to get everything situated...we waited over 40 mins to get our park reservations for our stay. The hotel was not busy at the time, the process was just not ideal as it was a lot of back and forth with our tickets not being "valid" to use on weekdays (which was not mentioned to me in my MULTIPLE calls to customer service/hotel). Finally, they said we were all taken care of. We start off at the first park for the day which was DCA and we are told our tickets are not valid. The attendants at the entrance advised us that the hotel should have never accommodated us with the tickets we had because we were blacked out that day. The whole point of us staying at the hotel and paying $700 was for us to be able to USE the passes we had. Not once did anyone I had spoken with prior to booking mention we needed to have valid passes or certain passes. We were not let in and were advised to go BACK to the hotel and sort it out. Another 30 mins later after going back and forth trying to sort out issues the hotel ensured were taken care of, we were given complementary park hoppers for the day since our original park hoppers weren't valid enough. That was the only way to get in at this point. Fast forward to our check in time. Check in time was 3PM, we were told we would be given a text once our room was ready. It wasn't until almost 4:30pm, 1 hour and 30 mins after our room was finally ready. Yet another inconvenience. The next day we thought we were set to go off to the park without any hiccups as we had taken care of that the day before. We went back to the front desks to switch the parks we were starting off in as our group was split into different parks. We were told they couldn't find one of the tickets we purchased the day before. SO after they finally found it again we were ensured everything was set and ready to go. Unfortunately that was not the case. They never made a park reservation for one of our guests. So AGAIN, we were not let into the park. They had to call the manager and all the manager did was ask me what email I used and walked away. She didn't come back. Our guest was let in but no one said anything to us so we went on with our day. To ensure this didn't happen in the other park I had to call the hotel and ensure the park reservation was for BOTH parks. After 20 mins and having to speak with two different hotel reps, they said we should be okay and finally made an entrance to the park without any problems. This entire experience was absolutely a nightmare. I have been an annual pass holder since I was a teenager and a very loyal Disney goer. If I would have known it was going to be this inconvenient, especially when we are paying an arm and a leg JUST SO WE CAN USE OUR PASSES, I would have taken the loss and never booked. If you are planning your trip to Disneyland and are staying at this hotel, please triple check everything they do for you. This hotel is conveniently located but very messy and unorganized. They did waive the parking fee which was $50 for the first inconvenience and I am nowhere near a greedy person but I feel like that did not compensate for everything we had experienced. Especially from a company like Disneyland. Read less

Expensive -YES, worth it? YES!! for us. We brought our five year old grandson for his first trip to the Disney parks. We needed to drive from the north Bay Area, but wanted to keep the trip short for his first time far from home as well. The lodgings and amenities were great, and we paid the extra for the concierge level with lounge. (Also expensive but worth it) . Check in was the only frustration: we arrived earlier than expected, so wanted to check in at the front desk as well as online to be sure they knew we were waiting: arrived before one on a Monday: waited a loooong time for the 2-4 staffed windows. (But they have a nice great room for waiting with cartoons for kids. ) Check in time:3pm, we didn’t get in till after 5, even after the front desk and the concierge made sure we were in the cleaning que. Hence the lounge access was a lifesaver. The pool was too chilly on a cool windy day, but we could have gone there-also no seating available. We didn’t plan to visit the parks on our first half day, but were pleased to find downtown Disney a great start…including the build your own light saber option in the Star Wars store at the end…(for a fraction of the price in the park for the same thing) Otherwise everything we saw was in perfect order, very clean, and running smoothly.(And beautiful and well designed ) Staff was extremely considerate at every turn start to finish. Even when quite busy, everyone was friendly and helpful. I understand they have started daily maid services again, though we didn’t know that and preferred not to for a three night stay-had all the towels etc that we needed without asking. (I imagine this is why they took so long cleaning after the weekend-and btw, I’m guessing they are often dealing with a spectacular mess after families of all ages pile out) The lounge and lounge staff were great including the variable food provided several times a day, many beverages, etc. But we all know it’s location, location, location. The proximity and ease of direct access to Disneyland, Downtown Disney, (with monorail station)and DCA are priceless. Whether you want to be there immediately at opening before the crowds, or carry an exhausted child home well after bedtime; or come and go to change out of wet clothes, get a coat or stroller, take a much needed break, have some snacks in the lounge, change clothes for the evening, you name it. We probably doubled our useable time in the parks because of this. When we only had tickets for two days, that meant that we did twice as much as we expected, virtually everything we were interested in (for a little kid) (thanks in large part to genie plus-why would you not?). Also, we had the character brunch at storytellers cafe downstairs on our check out day and it was great for us. Chip and Dale, Mickey, Minnie and Goofy made the rounds the whole time we were there. They paraded through a couple of times and then one went to every table to hi five and hug and pose with kids, or sign autographs…four of them spent time at our table in the hour or so we were there. I overheard a neighbor wanting to know why they didn’t spend more time at each table and that early or late they have more time, but it was just right for us-the characters are mute, so how much time do you need? Also, a delicious vegan meal was provided by order- sautéed veggies, potatoes, a faux sausage/burger patty, Mickey waffles and pancakes, fresh fruit, a couple of cookies-all first rate, with good service. Honestly, I’d rather wait to save for the larger expense, than go economy: starting and ending a shortened day shlepping a drarfy child in and out of an otherwise magical (and by no means inexpensive ) opportunity of a lifetime is no bargain.
