ANdAZ West Hollywood

West Hollywood, Los Angeles

The hotel

As sleek and understated as it appears from its spot on LA’s legendary Sunset Boulevard, the Andaz West Hollywood is actually a prime slab of Rock ‘n’ Roll history that dates back to 1963. Over the years the likes of The Who’s Keith Moon and The Stones’ Keith Richards have sent TVs flying off the (now enclosed) balconies, while Led Zep drummer John Bonham reportedly rode a motorbike up and down the corridors. Thoroughly renovated for the 21st century the Andaz relishes its history, but these days the musical motifs complement the minimally chic décor in boutique-style rooms rather than run rampant. Indeed, there’s a friendly, unpretentious welcome here that extends from the hotel’s enticing eateries to its breathtaking rooftop pool (where, incidentally, Spinal Tap’s end of tour party was filmed). Rock. And. Roll.

Had doctors appointment in Los Angeles. I normally stay at another hotel, but they we’re booked out. So I chose the Andaz. A good replacement. Room was clean and had a spectacular view of the Hollywood Hills and West Hollywood. Will definitely stay again next month.

I felt respected and treated well, especially during COVID. Check in was hassle-free and I my room was gorgeous. The view of LA from my windows was stunning! I cannot thank Andaz enough for the wonderful treatment and beautiful room.

The Andaz does not disappoint even during these challenging times. The Andaz does not disappoint even during these challenging times. It's hard to think of the "Rock & Roll Hyatt" as a silent sanctuary of meditative zen, yet that's what it has become during the Covid season. I checked in for a New Year's Eve stay-cation, considering the Andaz's fantastic views which span from Los Angeles' downtown, through Beverly Hills on to LAX airport & beyond. The goal was to view the city-wide fireworks display from a safe distance at night, and test my new binoculars (Christmas gift) by day at the rooftop pool deck. The Andaz room is large, well-appointed, and signature Los Angeles chic. The address is technically in West Hollywood, which guarantees an immersive experience featuring good design, modern tech and a touch of flair. Ok, a LOT of flair, but that's the point of staying at a hotel that was once occupied full-time by classic rock bands. The formerly exterior balconies have been enclosed to provide a fantastic view overlooking the city and street. Designed as a sitting area, the area adds living space to the room, and gives the feeling of being suspended in mid-air almost like a helicopter ride. No one else in the city has anything quite like this. The bathroom offers wonderful toiletries, marble flooring, accents and counter space. The only drawback to the luxurious shower is that it is not fully enclosed. The glass design is elegant, but no one wants all the heat and steam rushing out of the shower. Bad idea, sad to see it here, but it's not a deal breaker. The bed sleeps heavenly, and with a fridge, ample ports to plug and play phones and devices, the room quickly can become a sanctuary of comfort and convenience. I requested a coffee maker and microwave to spare the expense of room service ported in from across the street. The lobby restaurant is Covid-closed and the mini market is well attended, but a bit expensive - but we know this going in. Frankly, it's worth the price to keep a place like this open, we need this in troubled times. The pool deck offers a continuation of the art gallery that begins in the mezzanine level. Classic photos of the hotel's history add to the collection of Rock & Roll memorabilia that remind us that sadly, Hollywood is more of a frame of mind than an actual location. Still, the views are hard to beat whether facing the mansions on the hill, or the sprawling city to the south. Andaz pretends to be nothing. It is what it is. The best affordable luxury stay in town! The hotel is a bit older, however, it does not meet the standards of what is expected for an Andaz. While the initial customer service experience pre-arrival and upon check in was good, thing began to fall apart when we arrived in our room. There was hair in the shower. One of the lights didn’t work because it was unplugged and the surge protector was off. Furthermore, in the first evening of our stay, a sulfurous smell began to pervade the room. We think it was through the AC vent, because we shut off the AC and then opened the door, and it somewhat cleared out, but it was still quite smelly. We were promptly inconveniently moved to a new room, but with no broader accommodations beyond this. Another issue I have is with the positioning of the AC vent relative to the bed. All night long the AC will blow at the bed when you’re asleep, which isn’t great. However, you can’t win, because you want there to be AC when you sleep. Read less
