The Grafton on Sunset

West Hollywood, Los Angeles

The hotel

Channelling more rock ‘n’ roll energy than Steven Tyler’s microphone stand, the undeniably funky Grafton on Sunset offers upscale accommodation with a B-side of sass and lighters-in-the-air attitude. And it does this all within swaggering distance of legendary nite spots such as The Viper Room and Whiskey A-Go Go. Guest rooms and suites have an edgy elegance – think rock murals, leather, metal and the occasional OTT detail like a circular bed – there’s an inviting, private courtyard pool area, and the guitar-themed Bar20 has a full menu to keep you going. There's enough in-house entertainment to save you from having to brave the paps outside on Sunset Boulevard.

We have been on a fly drive around California and this is by far the best hotel - could not be faulted. Reception staff were so welcoming and helpful. We used Hollywood City Tours who were very well priced and if you are short of time it us over within two hours. Great places to eat within a short distance from the hotel - we loved the Saddle Ranch Chop House, which has excellent reviews on this website. If you stay here you will not be disappointed. We spent a week at the Grafton while visiting friends and attending a wedding, so we had lots of opportunity to come and go from the hotel, use the pool, eat/drink at Bar 20, and get back and forth using Lyft. Overall it was a very positive experience. Perfect location for our needs with a nice walkable stretch of Sunset full of bars, food, shopping, and everything we needed for a longish stay. (Fancy shopping and salons but also CVS, H&M, etc.) Our room was spacious (except for the tiny but well-appointed bathroom), clean, and well attended by housekeeping each day. Tons of closet space and a separate little seating area made for a comfortable stay. The pool and the balcony area above it were really sweet—we got to do a lot of sitting outside drinking and enjoying the view and vibe. Breakfast is complimentary, simple, and perfectly fine (eggs, toast, potatoes, oatmeal, cereal, fruit). The only complaint we had was the service at Bar 20 (the hotel bar). We went several times and although there were hardly any customers the bartenders each day were weirdly slow and inattentive. We waited a long time to get seen and even longer for drinks, including one day when we ordered 5 drinks from the pool and it took 40 minutes (and one reminder) for them to come. The bartender that day said he was busy fulfilling room service orders, hence the delay, but honestly he was the same guy who had been on duty the night before also ignoring us. Anyway, overall we were really happy here; it was funky, quiet, and chill, and well-run except for the bar. They’re losing money there—we probably would have tripled our bar bill for the week if we could have gotten served faster. (Maybe that was for the best, haha.) Definitely would stay here again. Stayed here for 4 nights during a road trip in California. The hotel has a cool 'rock star' vibe - perfect for its location on the Sunset Strip. We felt the location of the hotel was great - LA is big and choosing where to stay can be a challenge. We felt that the location in West Hollywood was within 30 mins drive of any of the major places to visit (Santa Monica beach / Hollywood sign etc). Check in was ok - it would have been useful if the staff member who checked us in had explained to us how we could access the morning coffee (that is included in the resort fee) - we had to ask about this when we couldn't find it (a minor point, though). Our room was a good size, clean and had a second door that opened out onto the poolside, which was nice. There are a number of good places to eat within walking distance of the hotel - we particularly liked Mel's Diner and the Butcher, the Baker, the Cappuccino Maker! Best tip (I feel) we can give is in relation to parking. Hotel Valet parking is $45 per night. We felt this was really expensive and I researched where we could park that was cheaper. There is a multi story SP+ car park (like an NCP (UK)) - 8570 Sunset Bvld - this car park is a multi story, 24hrs secure car park that is two streets away from the hotel. As there are maximum day and night rates, the maximum you will pay is $32 in any 24hrs. This saved us $52 during the course of our stay. Would recommend this hotel. Read less

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Not too hip

Hip enough - Sunset Strip location, really nice pool, music in bar - but still comfortable. Rooms are large enough and well laid out. The custom vanity in bath is a knockout. (The toilets don’t quite fit under it but the hipness is worth it.) Valet is pricey but top-notch. I have stayed here before and will happily return. Still, I wonder: Why… Read more
