I reserved weeks ago a room with two Queen beds for my daughter and I to stay at for one night while we went to a work event in San Diego yesterday. In fact the reason I chose this hotel was because the room's accommodation seemed to best fit what our needs and wants were for our stay. After a long day of travelling we checked in last night at about 9:45pm. They said nothing about any changes to what type of room we were getting but went on and on like we were getting something special. The building was just renovated and we were to be the first ones to stay in the room. We were super tired and just wanted to go to bed. The bell hop took us on a long dark walk to the building that looked to still be under construction. Upon arrival we discovered only a single queen bed and were told there was no other options. It wasn't even a king bed. It was tiny. Either we had to share it or get a cot. If we wanted a cot we'd have stayed at a hostel or gone camping. Additionally our room's lock pad had a bad battery apparently so it had to be replaced or our key would never work. We had to wait 20 minutes for them to replace it before we could even get dressed into our jammies. As a design note on the "new" room making coffee if you are shorter than 5'4" is very difficult. They have it placed elevated to where you can't read the instructions without picking it up and turning it over and filling it is a pain. I'm going to ignore all the construction debris that was everywhere because even without that I can't help but feel I got bait and switched. We were so tired we tried to make the best of it but the sleep was terrible. It wasn't the experience we were sold. Anyone that has tried to share a bed with their kid knows that they can kiss their sleep goodbye. I just wanted a good night's rest. I didn't get it. When I spoke to the staff in the morning she was saying that the room was an upgrade because of the view....again we were there for one night and arrived after dark so we saw NONE of this supposed view nor did we want it. I'm so disappointed by this experience. They don't care about the experience of the guest, it's all about getting them in. They did refund a $32 resort fee but it wasn't about the money - the room was paid for by my work. Why couldn't they have communicated up front about the change? Who actually buys into the garbage that it was "an upgrade" since they knew in my reservation we were staying ONE night. If I wanted the view room I would have reserved one, I wanted the comfortable bed and was robbed of that. I'm never going back and suggest others be aware so you don't end up in what turned out to be horrible night. Spend your money elsewhere. Read less

We did stay in a renovated ocean front queen queen, close to the restaurant/pool and it was perfect for our family of three with a toddler! Riqa at the front desk is amazing, all restaurant staff and bartenders were friendly and ready to serve! I realize there are some down right pr*cks out there but just reading some of these reviews it’s pretty clear there are so many people out there that are just snobby and hard to please. Stay here and yes pay a little more but you get great service, a perfect location to the beaches, zoo, downtown, sea world, etc. thanks to all the staff for making it a wonderful trip. We’ll be back! Stayed here for 2 nights in bay view studio. Lovely room. Very nice hotel and grounds. All the amenities you’d expect from a resort hotel - staff pleasant and efficient. Good restaurant (Acqua) where we had two breakfasts and a dinner. Recommended

At least one of the buildings is being renovated. If you are unlucky and are assigned a room facing the construction, not only will you have an unpleasant view of a construction site, but you may be awoken at 6:30 am by construction trucks backing into the site. If you are unlucky and are assigned a room facing the construction, not only will you have an unpleasant view of a construction site, but you may be awoken at 6:30 am by construction trucks backing into the site. There is also some kind of work being done in other parts of the hotel campus (e.g. main entrance to another building was closed and you had to use a side entrance; part of the 1st level was blocked off with plastic). Not very relaxing for a vacation. The hotel did switch rooms after we complained, but IMHO, they should not be putting anyone in the room we were initially assigned for the 1st night (until construction is done). It also smelled terrible (musty/dank). The new room was decent and did not smell, and my sister's room (she paid extra for a water view) was pretty nice. I think the hotel should tell you in advance that there is construction going on (I have seen other hotels do this), to manage expectations. Also, while we were moved to a new room after complaining, the way this was handled was not great. On the 1st day, we were told we would move to one area by a man at the front desk (where our reunion classmates were located), only to be told something different the next day (that we could not move to where he said, because that was only upgraded rooms, which I don't even think was true); consistency would have been nice. The Hilton San Diego Resort went above and beyond to make our Mother's Day stay super memorable. As Hilton Diamond members we were upgraded to a Waterfront room, which was renovated and had a great little deck, steps to the sand. Perfect with our toddler, and the sunset views over the bay were nothing short of amazing. Speaking of, we wanted to enjoy the special Mother's Day brunch, but with a toddler that can't sit still that was going to be a challenge. Since our room was adjacent to the Acqua California Bistro where the brunch was being served, the restaurant staff was nice enough to accommodate us with a table right on our room's deck! This allowed us to take our time with the little one playing and not disturbing any other restaurant guests. My wife was thrilled and set the tone for us to enjoy a relaxing day. Although the weather wasn't particularly warm, we did take a dip in the pool which seemed to be heated to a comfortable temperature and sparkling clean. We will be back! Things to note: parking near your room can be a challenge and there is a whole section of the property still undergoing renovations. I would consider rooms in the Casa Grande tower the least desireable as they are at the back of the property (closest to freeway and furthest from the water) so consider upgrading to one of the low-rise buildings.
