Riu Plaza Fishermans Wharf

Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco

The hotel

Just a pleasant stroll from the shops and entertainment at Pier 39, and the ferry to Alcatraz, the Riu Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf makes a stellar base to explore from. Recently modernised, the hotel’s relaxed and friendly vibe is ideal after a day’s dim sum dining, cable car riding and selfie snapping. Your room is suitably airy and comfortable, you can kick back on the sun terrace by the outdoor heated pool, and, perhaps our favourite part, you can hangout by a crackling fire pit in the outdoor living area.

I suppose I can get past the unfriendly and unwelcoming check-in experience. But a little training for staff to be friendly, smile and extend a welcome would be nice. Things continued to get worse though after check-in when we arrived with the bellman with our bags to our room. When he opened the door the bed had been slept in and there was garbage in the room. He tried to call the front desk from the room phone 5 or 6 times but it just rang for minutes without being picked up. Clearly it had not been made ready. After about a half hour checking in a second time with the unfriendly desk clerk she assigned a new room but decided too call housekeeping to have them double check that it was ready. It wasn’t! The housekeeper supervisor then advised which rooms were definitely ready for occupancy. The desk clerk explained the the issue was due to a “glitch” inn their system. No one on the team knew what the other was doing. The next morning our room had no hot water. We called the desk and they said we could use a shower in another room. she had to go to the front desk to get a key. When she got to he room it was not made up. Slept-in bed, garbage, and dirty towels everywhere. She called the front desk and was told to come down for another key but one employee instead brought it up to her. He was getting ready to leave when my wife suggested they look at the new room together. Guess what? It too was dirty. They again said they have a “glitch” with their system. The problem with their system is they have no system! In any event we were unable to shower that morning. The whole ordeal was highly unsatisfactory! Read less

Our room was on the first floor, meaning we had to keep the blinds closed at all times for privacy. There was a bus terminal right outside our window that was loud all night long, plus we could hear full conversations of people walking by outside. We came in a larger vehicle (over 9’ tall) and the front desk staff had no ideas for where to park (their parking is 6’ max). Additionally, there is no hot tub at the pool which is disappointing because it was a cooler day, and they charged $17 for a hot chocolate with Bailey’s at their lobby bar. The TV app was also not available for some reason. On the bright side, the best was very comfortable. Read less

Beautiful hotel in a convenient location with excellent service and amenities! Check-in was smooth and helpful, as the person checking us in made sure that we had any questions answered related to location, sites to see, restaurants to try, etc. The hotel bar was very nice and convenient. We were there the 2 days before the full breakfast opened again post-COVID, but the breakfast offerings they did have were excellent! The room was clean, updated, and much more spacious than I expected! There were several areas to "hang out" such as the fire pits in front of the hotel, the fire pit around the pool area and another courtyard area. They have onsite parking available but our Tahoe was too tall to fit into their garage so they recommended parking in a public ramp across the street - which ended up being cheaper anyway! The hotel is just a block away from one of the central locations for tourist attractions at Fisherman's Wharf. We enjoyed walking the waterfront at night, stopping in restaurants and shops. We love to walk so we were able to walk to/from North Beach (Little Italy), Chinatown, Lombard Avenue's "crooked street", etc. People will ask about homelessness in San Francisco - there is really no way to avoid it in the city but this area was pretty good and we always felt safe. One night while sitting around the fire pit near the pool, a homeless man jumped the fence around the pool to make himself comfortable on a chair on the other side of the pool...but security was there not long after to ask him to leave. We 100% recommend the Riu Plaza Fisherman's Wharf to others and will seek it out again if/when we return to San Francisco. We stayed at the Riu in NYC and had a similar experience...it seems to be the hotel we will seek out, if possible, when traveling! Read less

Safeway grocery across the street, traders Joe's a block away, California room breakfast buffet well staffed, choices, supervisor observing. Long check in lines but full attention once at the front. Fire lounges outside. Security outside hotel. Only complaint: a stack of used food dishes sat in hallway for the 2 days I was there - odd housekeeping didn't pick up. Room was serviced day one of two day stay to our surprise. Read less
