The hotel

If you like historic charm and classic character but want modern high-tech touches too, the Mark Hopkins may hit the spot. The hotel is pretty central too, so you’ll be close to many of the city's hotspots. Be sure to pop up to the 19th floor lounge for a sunset cocktail or a nightcap, as you gaze out over the skyline, Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. The lounge has a dance floor and live music on some nights, so you may stay longer than you plan to.

Stayed here for two nights and were in general very happy with our stay. The hotel has a nice location in a safe area, close to public transportation. It's shows its age, but still manages to uphold a classic feel to it. We arrived with a car but returned it to the rental agency after leaving our luggage because of the insane parking fees, but there are much more affordable parking a block away if you can do without valet. We had some issues but with our room being ready later then expected and charges we weren't informed about, but the hotel settled this in a great manner and agreed to my suggestions for compensating the shortcomings. Service in general was professional and courteous and especially one of the doormen (Andy?) was great and loved by our 4yo. We got an upgraded room (corner suite) and the views were amazing. Nice beds and both a shower/tub in the bathroom. As with the hotel, the room also is on the older side with classic furnitures (although not very comfortable), but it was clean and comfortable. This stay could have gone either way, but based on the hotels level of service when we encountered some hick-ups, we were satisfied and would come back if visiting San Francisco again. Read less

This hotel has been one I have wanted to stay at for many years. On arrival the Reception managed our reservation effectively however when I asked about access to the Club Lounge we were given a voucher for one glass of wine each and a voucher each for a plate of food for the first two nights. This is not what I expected from a Club Lounge and although the Lounge is at the top of the hotel with fab views I don't think it was worth the additional expense of the stay. On the third night (Friday) we were allowed to access the club lounge on the 1st floor and there we were allowed to have more than one glass of wine each. Also this hotels allows dogs in the room and on our first night where we were suffering from jet lag our sleep was disturbed by a dog barking constantly. On ringing the operator within 5 minutes the noise stopped. The breakfast service was great the first two days but extremely slow on the saturday morning. Read less

Upon checkin, we were assigned a room that hadn't been cleaned yet and had to make an extra trip to the front desk. On the second night, our keys stopped working and we had to make another extra trip to the front desk. On the second night, our keys stopped working and we had to make another extra trip to the front desk. The hotel has some historic charm, but it also has historic dents and dings in the doors, millwork, furniture, grime in the bathroom, etc. The kicker was arriving home and finding I'd been charged a $34 / night resort fee that I was not told about at checkin or booking. To be clear: there are NO resort amenities at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins hotel. It is just shameless money grab. They may as well just call it what it is: an "extra money for us" fee for which the guest receives no value whatsoever. Read less

Definitely not a business hotel. To print a single document from the "business center cost over $20. I don't know if I would revisit for pleasure either. The hotel has been minimally maintained and it shows. A coat of paint only hides so much. I honestly expected a Big Wheels to come screaming around the corner every time I left my room!

We have been to the Mark Hopkins many times but this time they surpassed even their most excellent service. As I placed a last minute call on the Eve of my anniversary to the desk they provided a beautiful suite, brought our flowers and champagne , set them in the living room and made my wife very happy. We had an excellent day thanks to Issa and Arman at the front desk. They are always so helpful and go the extra mile to make us comfortable and offer us the best possible lodging. Always gracious and charming and o- so helpful. Many thanks to you and your team for making our 14th wedding anniversary so memorable and enjoyable Read less
