Arrived with friends, got 2 "historic" rooms. Ours was tiny, there's was much larger albeit with a slightly strange smell. Rooms clean and tidy, slightly outdated (historic?). Rooms very warm and the aircon wasn't really doing much to help. Noise from outside - large fans? really loud, earplugs required at night. Complimentary breakfast was a nice… Read more

My wife and I have been staying with the Handlery Hotels in San Francisco and San Diego as well for well over 10 years. Both properties have their own unique charm. The president Jon Handerly is usually on site and always willing to help. Our first experience with the Handlery Hotel was in San Francisco. We stayed on the premium side which has a balcony that overlooks O’Farrell. Very nice spacious room, great comfortable bed and any amenities that leave you wanting nothing. Not to mention the heated pool which is in between the historical side and the premium side. We have a timeshare which we could use in San Francisco, we save that for other trips to other locations. We stay at the Handlery because we know what we’re going to get. Each and every time they have met and or exceeded our expectations. Most of their employees have been with them for well over 10 years, that said something about the way the place conduct their business. You can expect to be greeted by Hermie from the bell desk, he always greet you with a smile and a handshake and a comment like welcome back good to see you again. Yes they all seem to remember you the matter how long it’s been since your last visit, this charming place is located one block off Union Square and approximately three blocks from the BART. So convenient, you get off the BART and walk right up the hill. To overlook this property would be a mistake. Both San Francisco and San Diego properties are our favorites, Read less

Recommended by travel agent and great location for San Francisco. Most bus routes stopped nearby and cable car at end of the street. Loads of major shops nearby. Taxi rank around the corner. Had breakfast as part of the deal and 3 options were all lovely and gave a great start to the day. Staff very polite and helpful when required.

This hotel is all about location. It is handy for all San Francisco has to offer. The bell hop was great. Advised how to get to the hire drop off and helped my wife to the polite friendly receptionist. We were pleased to receive free breakfast vouchers. The interior is dark and dated. This hotel is all about location. It is handy for all San Francisco has to offer. The bell hop was great. Advised how to get to the hire drop off and helped my wife to the polite friendly receptionist. We were pleased to receive free breakfast vouchers. The interior is dark and dated. Our room was a good size but the lights were dim. We had two windows, one overlooking rooms and one facing the courtyard. The A/C was noisy but we didn’t need it. We couldn’t leave the windows open because of noisy extractor fans venting into the courtyard. There was a coffee maker, but we Brits like a kettle to brew tea and not have to run partly boiled water through the machine which makes it taste of coffee. The complimentary breakfast was bacon or sausage with eggs and potatoes and coffee. It was OK, could have been hotter and the scrambled eggs had been sitting around a while. One day we were first in for breakfast and it was good and hot. The breakfast waiting staff were good and friendly, as were the room maids. We ate in the restaurant on 2 nights. The food was OK and we didn’t have to pay extra for veg. The wine was pricey. One night we had the double pork chop. It was a huge piece of pork, well cooked and tender. However, it lacked flavour. I made the mistake of tipping only 15%. The waiter slammed our receipt on the table and stormed off without speaking! This hotel tries its best and being centrally located is ideal for a short break despite the shortcomings.I would stay here again. Read less
