The Marker Hotel - Union Square

Union Square, San Francisco

The hotel

Put yourself slap-bang in the middle of some of San Francisco’s most fashionable theatres, restaurants, and sights. The boutique Marker Hotel is a great base — and its energy matches its setting. It was built in 1910 but you can still see its ‘Beaux Arts’ beauty in the lobby’s floor-to-ceiling fireplace and grand marble staircase. The hotel’s anything but olde-worlde though, with little touches like WiFi, a Hydration Station providing fruit and herb infused water on tap, and a social wine hour each evening.

An excellent hotel with fantastic rates, beautiful, clean rooms, friendly helpful staff and perfect location being just 2/3 blocks from Union Square. We had dessert at the Tratto (attached restaurant) after returning from our show. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day in San Francisco.

The Marker is an old grande dame of a hotel, stately and lovingly maintained. But what really sets the hotel apart is the warmth of the staff. Daimler, the hotel manager, made great recommendations for restaurants in the neighborhood--and when we returned from breakfast, insisted on a "photo shoot" for me and my wife in the gorgeous lobby of the hotel. Now we will have some great photos to remember our time in SF and in The Marker. I recommend the hotel most highly. Read less

First, I did not receive the confirmation email at the time of booking, and I contacted them three times about it. However, they ignored two times and finally sent me the mail on the day of my stay even though they replied that they will send me the email right away when I called them. I have never been apologized to for this. Second, when I checked in, I was not given any explanation about the hotel, such as the cleaning of the room. I returned to my room on the second night and found it had not been cleaned, I went to the front desk and asked for it to be cleaned. However, the front desk clerk yelled at me that they could not do it unless I told them by 4pm. In the first place, I was never told that cleaning was by appointment only, so it was clearly their fault. I had no choice but to ask for new towels, but they did not come soon. When I called and asked again, they brought me a torn bath towel. Also, I paid for the Guest Amenity fee, but they did not replenishing with new amenities unless I ask them. In addition, the cleaning staff unlocked the door without my request. Finally, when I asked at the front desk about how to get to Fisherman's Wharf, I was only told how to take the bus. I thought this was really unkind, as it should have been easy to understand that the cable car is famous and tourists expect to tell how to ride the cable car. I also felt uncomfortable when I couldn't figure out how to close the entrance door and was touching it, suddenly a staff in front of the fireplace yelled something at me. Read less

The only downside is that there is no parking at the hotel, but there are reasonably priced lots for SF that are nearby. Read less
