The hotel

The first island you’ll hit as you drive through the keys is Key Largo, most famous for it’s watersports with reef snorkelling, diving, and glass bottom boat tours out of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park as must-do activities. Neighbouring the state park you’ll find Playa Largo set on 14.5 acres of secluded shoreline, providing your own piece of paradise to stay whilst exploring this part of Florida’s famous archipalageo. The private beach is the only thing between you and the sparkling waters of Florida Bay, where you can enjoy a range of watersports right from the hotel as well as venturing out to nearby attractions (of which there are plenty). There is a laid-back feel to the resort, perfectly in keeping with the area, but that doesn’t stop the facilities and service being up to standard. From a beach shack restaurant to a ceviche bar, all tastebuds are catered for, La Marea is a particularly great choice for locally sourced seafood and freshly handmade artisan breads and pizzas. When you’re seeking serenity after all the activity, book in at Ocean Spa where you can try specially formulated scrubs using coffee grounds, sugar, and salt. The top class service doesn’t end when you get to your room, an iPad is on hand to offer on-demand services to ensure your stay is up to scratch.

The room was on the 2nd floor in a small courtyard facing other rooms and an outdoor cafe. An event was being held in the courtyard. This didn’t seem like an upgrade but the staff said this was all they had. Staff was borderline rude. House keeping was spotty. Lots of families with small children running around the one and only pool, using the jacuzzi without supervision yet a sign stated one must be 18 to use it at all. Beautiful pool, property right on the beach. Unfortunately there aren’t enough lounges so we had to return to our room. I can’t recommend this resort especially for the nightly rates charged. Not a place for couples. Read less

A great location. The restaurants are top notch. Access to the beach is easy and smooth sand. Take advantage of their ocean access modes (kayak, paddleboards, boats, etc). Staff was courteous and helpful. Probably the best spot to stay in Key Largo

We had a bay king side suite which is perfect if you have kids. Bedroom had a door and it was very spacious. Overall, the room and hotel was very clean and spacious. Kids enjoyed fishing off the dock, s’mores at night and activities throughout the week. I thought the resort fee was high in that you had to rent paddle boards and kayaks from a third party and there was t enough amenities (pool floats, fishing rods) to go around when there wasn’t a time limit. Everything is first come first served so you have to be comfortable asking others to share. If I had one complaint, it was that there was a broad first come first serve with chairs. This isn’t uncommon but many resorts will limit the number to 2 per room, or if they remain occupied after a certain period of time, they are cleared by staff. Some people were not afraid to take advantage and staff is not inclined to assist. Bar service was entirely dependent upon the server. Some were great and others were not, but generally good service. One huge shout out to Sandra, who works the pool and beach. I have never seen anyone work that hard making sure activities ran smoothly. We loved her! Make sure you enjoy the Evertide celebration at sunset! Read less

We enjoyed our stay here but there are a few things to note before going: The service was great and everyone went out of their way to ensure things were taken care of They give you a list of things going on every day—especially for kids. Very helpful! The food was good but I would recommend getting a rental car or Uber for a few meals in the area. There are some great places around and the hotel menu doesn’t change. Paddleboards, fishing poles, bait, etc are available for free. There is GREAT fishing off the pier. Kids were catching dozens of fish. The larger fish and crabs the restaurant will cook for you. Plenty of parking both valet and self park. I would highly recommend reserving a pool cabana but you need to do it months in advance. Months. I tried 6 weeks before our trip and everything was sold out. The towel situation here at the pool is insane. People stand in line at 7am and “claim” chairs. Some people don’t even use them until 2pm or later. The staff could do a much better job of managing this. People get irate. I witnessed someone screaming and throwing things at a woman who obviously didn’t know the “rules”. It’s a chair. And you aren’t using it. There is just a random towel on it so how does anyone know? It was raining one of the days we were there and people were getting soaked, huddled on their chairs so they didn’t lose them. Im not sure if this has something to do with the day passes but I feel like if you are going somewhere on vacation, paying a decent amount of money and plus resort fee, you should be able to use the amenities without having to partake in the Hunger Games. It really ruined the vacation for a lot of people because you have nowhere to sit even just to have lunch or enjoy the sun. The hot water in our room was hit or miss. Sometimes we got it after about a 10 minute wait, sometimes not at all. The a la carte breakfast is much better than the buffet and highly recommend. Service at the sol restaurant is fantastic.
