The hotel

Undoubtedly one of the most sought after hotels in the Caribbean, Round Hill Hotel & Villas has been a long-standing Jamaican icon since its opening in 1953. A former pineapple estate on the outskirts of Montego Bay, what is it about Round Hill that makes it such a magnet? Round Hill is where Jacqueline and JFK spent their honeymoon, where Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the Sound of Music, where Hitchcock got sunburned and where Noel Coward, if egged on enough, would sing for the guests. After 70 years, Round Hill has a million stories to tell. Today, this elegant beachfront resort offers the same blend of qualities that has always pulled the famous names and faces; namely a well-preserved slice of old Jamaica and tremendous hospitality. You still enjoy the plantation’s stylish architecture and a predictably colonial pace of life, but with the added pull of an oceanfront spa, an exceptional family program and refurbished hotel rooms designed for beach living by Ralph Lauren, (perhaps whilst visiting his own villa at Round Hill). The ocean side restaurant perfectly blends the hotel’s historic pedigree with its new energy, classic décor with an open kitchen and wood-fired grill.

I don't usually write reviews, but felt compelled to write one for Round Hill after a magical trip last weekend. We went on a multi-generational trip, with ages ranging from 3 to 75. My dad, the eldest on our trip, was born in Jamaica but hadn't been back for a very long time and had never brought his wife to visit. This was a visit to introduce her and his grandson to where he was born. I've stayed at a few other hotels in Jamaica and my trips have always left me disappointed, so we were a little apprehensive this time around. However, Round Hill was nothing short of spectacular, from the genuine warmth at check-in to the impromptu tour of all of the fruit trees on the property that we received on the last day. Our three-bedroom villa had breathtaking views of the ocean. We felt secluded, but steps away from all of the amenities we needed. It was spacious, well-appointed and beautifully decorated, with so many places to lounge and reconnect with one another. We also had a lot of fun in the private pool alongside the villa. Each morning began with made-to-order breakfast cooked at our villa specifically for our family. We made special off-menu requests and the villa staff (Norris, Tassie and Sharon) just asked for a day to make sure they had all the ingredients. Truly excellent food and warm, genuine service. Each evening brought a different themed dinner, all with delicious food and incredible musical entertainment. I could go on -- about the kids club, the glass bottom boat tours each morning, the beach, the drinks -- but suffice it to say, the trip was unforgettable and Round Hill delivered in every way.
