Intercontinental Mark Hopkins

Nob Hill, San Francisco

The hotel

If you like historic charm and classic character but want modern high-tech touches too, the Mark Hopkins may hit the spot. The hotel is pretty central too, so you’ll be close to many of the city's hotspots. Be sure to pop up to the 19th floor lounge for a sunset cocktail or a nightcap, as you gaze out over the skyline, Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. The lounge has a dance floor and live music on some nights, so you may stay longer than you plan to.

The Mark Hopkins lives up to it's Luxury status. It's location is far enough away from the drug addicts that now inhabit so many San Francisco streets. The park across the street provide a nice clean place for a morning walk. Try the top floor bar and restaurant, a classic spot with wonderful views.

Hoping for a good experience in the city, we chose a property with a good recommendation. We were fortunate to get a rate that included parking because it is over $70 per day if it’s not included. Hoping for a good experience in the city, we chose a property with a good recommendation. We were fortunate to get a rate that included parking because it is over $70 per day if it’s not included. Although the staff was nice, it was clear that something was missing from the beginning. We asked for a room that was quiet with a view. What we were offered as an upgrade was one close to the elevator which kept us up well into the night. Every part of the hotel showed its age and it smelled like an old building. While asking about club level amenities, there are essentially none. I asked 2-3 way to clarify and got the same answer. Ambassador Club exists in name only here and it’s not worth anything beyond that. This hotel is overrated in every category with the exception being the friendliness of staff. Status has no status here. Read less

We stayed at The Mark Hopkins over 4 nights for our daughter’s New Year’s wedding. This was our second time staying at the hotel, and because we had such a nice experience the first time, we decided to book a block of rooms for our guests for the wedding weekend. The hotel is a Grand Dame of historic charm, but it is the staff that makes the experience. We dealt with Lavon for reservations and she was wonderful. Very professional, easy to communicate with and super thoughtful. She even had a full length mirror brought to our suite for the bride and I to use for the wedding. She also checked in before, during and after the event to see if we needed anything. The front desk, restaurant and cleaning staff were also all very helpful and friendly. During COVID everyone seems so stressed and unhappy, but not at The Mark Hopkins….this staff understands service and are still trying to provide the best service they can. Our rooms were all clean and comfortable, and everyone raved about the fantastic views. I appreciate the quality of the sheets and towels, and that the windows open for fresh air. Yes, this is an older hotel and there were a few items that showed some wear…..but still being in a Pandemic, I chose to focus on the cleanliness over frayed fabric. Hopefully once things return to pre-COVID bookings and the hotel is busier they will be able to address a freshener of carpet and fabrics. Honestly, for the most part things were in good shape, just not great. To be fair…..in the past 9 months we have also stayed at the Fairmont and Hyatt Regency and they were all in about the same condition. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating An old fashioned (in both good and bad way) hotel

Stayed at this hotel for one night in a room facing the Grace Cathedral. Going up and down the Nob Hill could take some energy, but the views were good. The front desk was very efficient, though the senior male staff who helped check-in was with a cold face, not a warm and welcome feeling. The front desk was very efficient, though the senior male staff who helped check-in was with a cold face, not a warm and welcome feeling. I asked for a higher floor, but ended up with a sixth floor room. The room was classic (a bit old fashioned), simple and clean, with a coffee manchine, but no fridge. The thick curtains could not fully cover the windows, which was a bit lack of privacy. There are only three guest elevators, and you might need to wait for a while during dinner time as some people come for the restaurant at the top of the hotel. But a female staff was very nice, and let me use the staff elevator to go to my floor. The location of the hotel was excellent, just a few minutes away from the Chinatown, where you can find plenty of delicious food. It's a four star hotel, but the overall quality is not four star. I would try some other hotels next time when I am in SF. Read less

Bottom it is. IHG who owns it does everything to scrimp, save and cheat. Furnishings totally depreciated in value and accounting so why not replace them? Glass window was loose. Street noise as windows are single paned.. Room charge had "hidden" fees for items no one had used!!!
