The Drake Hotel

Chicago, USA

The hotel

The Drake Hotel is in the finest location in Chicago, situated at the very tip of the Magnificent Mile Neighbourhood, and located right in front of Oak Street Beach overlooking Lake Michigan. It hasn’t lost any of the glitz or traditions which drew in Chicago’s glitterati for its grand opening on New Year’s Eve in 1920, and in the decades which followed. It still hosts High Tea, with its delicate petit fours and fragrant teas now served in the appropriately decadent Palm Court. You can still dine (and drink) at Coq d’Or, the city’s second venue to get that all-important liquor license after Prohibition ended in 1933. A milestone on The Magnificent Mile, with direct access Lake Michigan’s Oak Street Beach, be prepared for drama, history and luxury.

I also liked that it has a Lavazza Cafe on the ground floor with wonderful coffee and great quiche. Such a relief after so many Starbucks. My upgrade room was on the 10th floor, which is the top floor, and was very spacious and quiet. I interacted a lot with the valet parking people, who were excellent. If you are into shopping, you are in the heart of some of the most upscale stores around, like Gucci and Cartier. Read less

We stayed at The Drake for 2 nights in July. We were upgraded ? to a junior suite on the 10th floor. The desk chair was soiled (yuck!) and the window shade completely broken so it was hard to get light into the dark room. I tried to get someone to fix it but it didn’t happen. There was no ice on the 10th or 9th floor. I had to go down to the… Read more

There was no ice on the 10th or 9th floor. I had to go down to the front desk to the have a person take me to the 3 rd floor just to get ice! (Really??!) However, the staff was amazing and accommodating. They kept apologizing. The Drake is in a perfect location but I would not recommend this hotel. I expect more from a supposedly upscale Hilton hotel. I travel a lot; so I have seen all kinds of hotels and The Drake has been one of my favorite experiences. It is a true old school 5 star hotel. From the friendly Valet to the Bellhop and every need being enthusiastically met. The people made me feel very comfortable throughout my stay, and the plush furniture didn't hurt either. Memorial Day Weekend - May 22: We loved our stay at the Drakes. We were looking exactly for a traditional hotel, "belle epoque style" chic and that's exactly what we found. Large and very clean room, renovated marble bathroom, beautiful ballrooms, very elegant afternoon tea salon. Location is very privileged, close to the nicest part of N Michigan Ave. Walking distance to restaurants and attractions. Parking is expensive, there is vallet parking (which we didn't use) and hotel partners with a public garage half a block away. Be sure to validate your ticket at the hotel concierge so you can drive in and out multiple times a day and be charged only for the night rate (parking is expensive all over Chicago). Although an old hotel, maintenance has been kept very well. A couple minor incidents (the drapes were not functioning properly), but nothing to take high scoring away. We are coming back again in August 22. Read less
