The hotel

Sometimes it’s all about location. And Sunway Hotel has that covered for your stay in Phnom Penh. Just around the corner from the iconic Wat Phnom Pagoda, with its incredible craftsmanship, this central hotel’s also just a stroll from Tonle Sap River and the buzz of Phnom Penh Night Market, and a 15-minute walk from Central Market. When you’re not browsing the city’s market stalls, a quick taxi ride takes you to must-see sights like Wat Ounalom, Silver Pagoda and National Museum. Before heading out, you can grab pastries from the hotel’s Deli Shop; and when you return, you can dine on International and Cambodian dishes at Sun Café, or head to The Lobby Lounge for oven-baked pizza, a game of pool, and whatever sport’s playing on the screen.

Secure room, good shower temperature, good water pressure, clean, comfortable bed - all checks. Climate control. I do like the fact that I could control all of the lights, climate, and the alarm clock - all by the bed. While I could set the room temperature to 19 degrees, it quickly reversed itself to 21 degrees. Not sure if this was a problem with the thermostat or an eco thing. 21 is a bit warm for me. Not a big deal. I also learned, that the privacy control, in lieu of a door hanger, is also located on the control box. Breakfast - something for everybody. When traveling, I am pretty much a US breakfast person, so I was pleased with the choices. I've noticed a couple of negative comments about location from other reviewers. It is across from the US Embassy, literally right next to X, 5 minute walk to night market, 7-10 minute walk to riverfront. Is it located in the center of the riverfront? No and I was glad - too much noise, but a 7-10 minute tuk-tuk ride for $2-4. A negative for me was that the hotel did not offer any concerige services, to my knowledge. When I checked-in, I asked about a couple of items and was handed a map. Not sure if there was a slight language barrier or the hotel just doesn't such services. Also, it is 2019. There should be no properties without USB charging ports. USB-charged devices are ubiquitous now and such charging ports are very inexpensive. (Hence 3 for service.) Tuk-tuk ride from airport was $10, by the way. A taxi (car) would have been the same amount, and given the traffic, likely not any faster. Read less

The Sunway Hotel is Centtrally located near Wat Phnom and not far from the river and night markets. Although it does not have a pool it does have an very good gym. The staff are friendly and helpful, the breakfasts excellent and the rooms well appointed and clean. A pleasant place to stay in Phnom Penh.

There are some hotels where you feel that pricing is transparent and clear, and others where they try and catch you out with hidden charges. The latter type of hotel is really tiring and stressful I find, and unfortunately this is what Sunway hotel is. The first hint I had that something was wrong was when I booked their hotel car to pick me up for airport transfer. I was told that the price was $15 when less than 7 weeks previously I had been to Phnom Penh and the price for an AC taxi transfer whether booked at the airport or through hotel was $12. On that trip I booked through my hotel (a different hotel) and was charged $12. So I asked Sunway why their price was more, and they said because they provided a Lexus for the transfer. Paying more for the latest version Lexus made sense to me, so I agreed. However, the Lexus that turned up at the airport to get me was older than the other taxis around and in very poor shape! The AC groaned to get us cool. Another example of "nickle & diming" are the hotel extras. As mentioned, I stayed at another hotel in the same city 7 weeks earlier so had some comparison. At that hotel, the prices shown were the prices charged. In fact, I found at all the restaurants I went to that the prices shown was what was actually charged (as one would expect), with no hidden taxes added on at the end etc. Well Sunway is different. Don't take the prices shown at face value!!!! If you look closely you will find in small print at the bottom of each page "VAT 10%, Service Charge 10%, Alcohol Tax (if applicable) 3%". Yes, you read that correctly, you need to add on a minimum of 20% to the price you see! I believe that this is why Sunway offers very reasonably priced rooms (and the room was just fine), it is because they catch you out with shady practices in hiding the real price of add-ons. Didn't leave me with a good feeling, hence only 3 out of 5. Oh, by the way before I arrived I asked for a room away from the road as I wanted it quiet. They confirmed in writing that this was arranged. When I arrived, I also asked on check-in if I had a room away from the road. They confirmed I did. Guess what room I had when I went up? A room next to the main road! With a construction site across the street! I promptly changed it. I do not recommend any hotel who does not advertise the FINAL price of a good or service. This practice is illegal in many parts of the world, and not practiced at other choices in the city. Read less
