Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort

Aruba, Caribbean

The hotel

When you’re beside one of the world’s most talked about beaches, it is only right you spend every waking moment on the sands. That’s why Amsterdam Manor even lets you dine with your toes in the pearl-white powder – on tables lit by romantic tiki torches, with the sound of the frothy surf rolling in. And it’s not just its restaurant that’s beach-top, it also serves up Caribbean-side cocktails and light lunches at its beach bar, and weekly movie nights on the sands. Just over the coastal road from Eagle Beach, the main hotel’s a showcase of Aruba’s Dutch Colonial architecture, with its cheery yellow buildings capped with burnt-orange tiles, and it’s home to another fabulous bar, the culinary global theme nights of Mangos, and a pool that does its utmost to beat the lure of the beautiful beach beyond it.

Our stay at the Amsterdam Manor was suberb! The resort is located across street from Eagle Beach..perfect location for beaching, walking, restaurants & grocery store. The hotel service, rooms & food are excellent. One of our best experiences to Aruba. Highly recommend & will stay there again!

We stayed at the hotel from Jan 5-10 2020, in a one room suite-Room 112B. Making arrangements was a little unfortunate -- I know 2nd hand sites (including trip advisor) takes a good chunk just for booking, so I always try to book directly with the hotel. Unfortunately, their web site was unwieldy (it kept blocking my view of the site by continuing to ask me to join their discount club...) The details of the cancel rate is not clear on their site, so I called the hotel...and if you book within 1 month, you don't get your deposit back (sounded like they might be flexible but could not chance it with a health issue). The hotel sites allow you to cancel within so many days to booked with them. Again, unfortunate. Let me list out my pros and cons -- also, we would stay their again. PROS + Great location -- literally across the street from the hotel. + Great room location -- 112B is a great room, view of beach, albeit dark (see con below) + Overall great room -- with exception of shower with no door and dark + Some great service -- we grind our own coffee, so they put in a traditional coffee maker...thanks! Also, love that you can walk to the beach and get help with chairs any time of the day (unlike cut throat resorts that make you pre-book your chair, etc...) + Great Resort Location -- Within a short walk from great restaurants, mass transit, big market, etc... Also, its away from the huge mega resorts... + OK snorkeling out front. To the right of the resort are some buoys, right were the beach front changes to coral at the beach front...go out to where the buoy is tied down...there are a decent variety of fish, and a family of lobsters underneath the concrete weight. This area does not compare to Baby Beach, but worth a look if you have snorkeling equipment. + Great patio...used it daily (included a photo) Studios do not have a patio... CONS - The room was dark. They were nice in trying to improve the lighting, but still was too dark for my wife...did not bug me as much, but was surprised how this is an issue that comes up again and again for this hotel. - Small thing, but no guide for cable TV...they have a mix of American, Dutch, and local, (and likely S. American) TV, but hard to track. While it was flat screen TV's, it was in low def... Also, bring your own HDMI cable if you can hook your tablet or laptop...I did not ask for one but would be surprised if they kept them on hand. - Furniture -- especially the main chair and couch, were not the best quality, and got uncomfortable after an hour or 2. (on the other side, the bed was great!!) Another example: The bedroom clock was still set up for the old iphone plug... - Smell in Area - Now this is unfortunate. The hotel may be near a septic dump site; there were several times I got a clear and deep septic smell...and a moment later it would be gone. I never happened in the room -- knowing that's a deep problem, did not complain about it, but hope that can be rectified. - WiFi a little more spotty than should have been. If this was 2010, OK, but no excuses for less than excellent wifi coverage... - Concierge support -- When I called the hotel, the nice guy (Yas) said we should reach out to concierge to make dinner and other reservations. I tried emailing 3 days in a row to make dinner reservations through the provided concierge email, and only heard back when I made a different reservation at Passions (I recommend the restaurant!) and they wrote back that it appeared I had two reservations. SIMPLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THEM NOT FULLY CHECKING ALL EMAILS DAILY - its a relatively quiet place, they can not be that overworked... - Theft Issue -- So they cleaned our room daily, and all went well...nothing missing. The day we checked out (we stayed at 2 places in Aruba...2nd place near the high rises 3 miles up the street), I realized at the new place that I left my Bluetooth speaker above the bed. I drove right back and the bell hop/assistant went with me to the room, where it was being cleaned...and no speaker. I wrote and left my email - they said they would keep their eyes open, but it was never turned in. Listen, I used to manage a retail store years ago, and know about this kind of thing...not much done until there is a pattern, and they acted like this is the first time something like this happened, so just left with a bad taste...and I do know management hates and regrets this type of thing...ah well, fortunately not a big $$ speaker, I know I went more on the negatives...and I hope in a way that the hotel can use this input (Personally, its much more of a nice hotel than a full resort.) Overall, if you can get a good rate here, its a nice place that cares about its reputation. Read less

If you go, you know. Aruba in general is a great place to visit and relax. AMBR is particularly special: a small property with a big presence on the finest beach. It's much more personal than a big chain high-rise. The people make it very special. Peter van Slooten is an incredible bartender. The whole staff is really good.
