The room itself - room cleaning is not the greatest. Toilets flush intermittently, hot water is only available some of the time. Some of the issues have to do with Cuban infrastructure and not the hotel. However the maids who "cleaned" our room were very insistent for gifts on top of the tips we left. And the hotel tried to overcharge a large number of people in our group for minibar/coffee we did not consume. It happened to enough people in the group that we noticed a pattern. That and the maids' behaviour left us with a bad taste. I much prefer Cuban homestays. Read less

It is 8 stories with 3 restaurants, 3 bars, 2 pools and a veranda overlooking the Malecon sea wall and ocean. It sits on a hill close to the ocean and harbor. The old Santa Clara Battery Guns previously used to defend the city are still in the garden. There is a Cuban Missile Crisis Memorial Site on the grounds. It is historic, beautiful and expensive by Havana lodging standards at about $200 + per night. It was a location of much partying and gambling by many famous people prior to the 1959 revolution, including Mafia notables. Many of the famous people preferred the second floor rooms, including Frank Sinatra and John Wayne. Rather than stay in a government sponsored hotel we stayed in a Casa Particular in the same District and went to the Nacional for two drinks and a tour. One of the drinks was Hemingway’s alleged favorite from Venice, a Bellini made the correct way with peach nectar and champagne. This was a scenic and beautiful site to visit with a wonderful staff to host us. Kudos to all who interacted with us. See amazing pictures. Read less
