Varadero, Cuba

The hotel

If family holidays are about building memories together, Iberostar Selection Varadero has all the tools you need. Arguably the finest family escape in Varadero, it sprawls along the powdery sand, so you get ample space to build sandcastles and paddle together. Backing the beach, its gardens feature pools with opulent touches like a rotunda, and its guest rooms spread through 11 buildings. You’ll never be short of something to do, with tennis, kayaking, and archery among its sports. And, while little ones are having fun at their Star Camp, you can indulge in the spa, before reuniting for evenings of colourful Cuban shows and dancing.

The issues I did have were; the beach was very difficult to use as it was full of rocks and shells both in the sand throughout the entire beach and in the water. I had to carry my son over the worst parts. Another downfall is the meal times. They are all far too late for children. The buffets didn't even open until 1pm and 6:30pm. I had to order room service for my son for dinner every night before going for dinner myself. The kids show started at 8pm so my son was never able to attend. I do also wish that there was a better selection of quality alcohol even if it is an up-charge. Read less

The hotel is absolutely beautiful! The staff has been friendly and there is something for everyone! If you say here you have to check out the shows, they are great! Would highly recommend. Just remember that the beach towels are only given 1 (in room at arrival) and you have to swap those in.

We just got back from a week here. I spent a lot of time reading the reviews and aaa actually a little anxious about going. Had we been the ones to book, I would have not chosen this hotel. This was my 4th time to Cuba, so I know the food is bland and the resorts aren’t up to Canadian standards. Having known that, I have to say, this resort wasn’t up to par. Not that the buildings them self were bad but it seems like the upkeep is what’s lacking. There’s a tiny beach and not nearly enough loungers for everyone. We left our loungers and towels for less than 5 minutes and has them taken by other guests. When we confronted them, knowing it was ours , because they were suddenly up two towels, one of which had a large stain on it (gross I know. But it was the one I was assigned) they became confrontational. A resort should have ample seating and not peg patrons against each other for seating like that. So now we are down two towels - argued with the other guests, got no where. Went to front desk. Then sent to customer relations. Who calls lost in found. Obviously they wouldn’t be in lost in found. We know where the towels were. Stupid process. They apparently didn’t have any other beach towels for us to use. For the rest of our stay. Then we are charged $30 for the “lost” towels. Also the bath towels in the room - we never got any face cloths. And we would come back To the room to be short a bath towel one day and a floor mat the next or a hand towel the next. We would be fine re using the towels. So it wasn’t us needing new bath towels every day. Just would have been nice having appropriate towels every day. The shower was also mouldy and had zero pressure. Also major issues with giving the room book to the patrons who booked it. A few people in our party booked and paid for swim out rooms. To not be given them the day we arrived. Elevators never work. And food was bland and gross. Zero consistency when it came to food. Read less
