Iberostar Selection Varadero

Varadero, Cuba

The hotel

If family holidays are about building memories together, Iberostar Selection Varadero has all the tools you need. Arguably the finest family escape in Varadero, it sprawls along the powdery sand, so you get ample space to build sandcastles and paddle together. Backing the beach, its gardens feature pools with opulent touches like a rotunda, and its guest rooms spread through 11 buildings. You’ll never be short of something to do, with tennis, kayaking, and archery among its sports. And, while little ones are having fun at their Star Camp, you can indulge in the spa, before reuniting for evenings of colourful Cuban shows and dancing.

I really loved the staff at this resort. They were all very attentive and helpful. Adrian was a great server and we loved talking to him. I really loved the staff at this resort. They were all very attentive and helpful. Adrian was a great server and we loved talking to him. He went above and beyond for us and even gave us his personal lighter because the resort sells cigarettes and cigars but don't sell lighters so he was great for helping us. The food was good, but they had alot of the same stuff at the buffet. I didn't have high expectations because Cuba is known to have okay food compared to other resort destinations. This resort had one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. The only downfall of my trip which is not the resorts fault at all is that it was cold out and the resort was very quiet when I went. They didnt have many people there at all which kind of killed the lively vibe of it. I also wish their pool was heated as it was super cold. But over all this resort was a great place to be! We stayed in this hotel as part 2 of our holiday after already being in Havana. We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights as a group of 8 of us. The hotel is beautiful! It was an absolute pleasure to stay here with everything being pristine and a nice environment to stay in. The hotel comprises of a large lobby area with a nice 24hr bar, 3 restaurants and 1 buffet restaurant, a cigar lounge, a little shop, the most beautiful pool, a pool bar, a pool grill, the most stunning beach and a beach bar and grill. The rooms were relaxing, clean and comfortable. They had lovely bathrooms, beds are super comfortable/ huge, each room had amenities such as a safe and a balcony! Following my recent review of the Iberostar in Havana I must remind you that this is a Cuban 5* so it may not match up to your comparison of other 5*s but I loved it all the same! We tried 2 of the 3 restaurants and the buffet. The Japanese restaurant was delicious and entertaining (would recommend) otherwise the Buffet was our favourite. Great selection of fresh food! What made this place so special though (besides a beach that’s out of this world) were the staff. We felt welcomed and appreciated, they were all polite and kind especially the members of staff at the Buffet! Yara and her friend/colleague made my birthday very special as we were over this for this! Evening entertainment was great too with a lot of thought and time gone into it! Great for sitting outside watching with a cigar in one hand and a glass of rum in the other! Varadero is a very different scene to the rest of Cuba but is great if you want some relaxation after the beautiful chaos of Havana! Would recommend this hotel to anyone. Read less

Food: Cuba has a reputation of having sub par food, but the buffet and restaurants where all excellent. Fresh fish cooked on the spot, the shrimp are amazing and the variety is very good. For lunch, on the beach and around the pool a chef makes fresh burgers that are to die for. Staff: The staff if very friendly. By our third day, our regular waitress would come and greet us at the door and give us a big hug before seating us. The bar staff are also very nice, with the table service being very fast. Cleanliness: The hotel is very clean and in very good condition for a 10+ year old hotel. Our room was ok. Furniture was a little beat up and our TV didn't work, but we were just unlucky, because we were in an older building. Other buildings have already been renovated with flat screens on the wall and newer furniture. The beach is fabulous... Lot's of chairs and umbrellas, we never had to wake up early to reserve chairs, there were plenty. Negatives: The only negative is exchanging money. Make sure you exchange at the airport, because the hotels take advantage of you. For 1 Canadian dollar you get 0.68 Cuban dollars. The airport has a much better exchange rate. This hotel is one of, if not the most expensive hotel in Varadero, Cuba but is worth every penny. This is my go to hotel now in Cuba. Read less
